Was that not one of the best National Anthems you've ever heard? Not sure who that guy was, but what a voice. Gave me the chills.

YES!!! Dude had some incredible range too. I sing myself and I turned to my wife and said whoaaaa. Great range, power and nice tasteful runs as well.

BTW the crowd looked down...was it about 25% Cuse?

That's about right. Might even have been 30%. There was orange everywhere. I almost felt bad for villanova fans I said almost lol

Thats the first time I've ever heard someone refer to the "runs" as "tasteful":(

I've been to the past 5 SU/Nova games in Philly and that was probably the smallest crowd I've seen. The upper deck behind each basket was empty. I would estimate that 1/3 of the total crowd was Orange.

I mean, this guy wasn't as talented of a singer as Carl Lewis or Roseanne, but he was still respectable.

My 8 year old daughter who apparently is not aware that you can perform a piece with some interpretative nuances leaned over to me during the anthem and said, "Dad, he's singing it wrong."

Does anyone even know of a good Villanova message board to see their flailing about our fans?

What a useless "fanbase" for a useless school.

When some people sing the national anthem they throw in so many runs that you can't even tell what song it is or it appears they are adding the runs just to show off. The fact that this guy did neither was behind my tasteful comment. I personally find singers that stray too far from the original arrangement just to show off distasteful I guess lol

haha. I know. just sounded funny

My observations from the W- Center:

  • Nova fans I encountered were polite. As a whole, I find their female students and alumni to be rather attractive. Must be all the years I spent in Catholic schools.
  • NA guy could belt it out. I'm a traditionalist and normally don't like it when the singer improvises and stays too far from the actual melody, but this guy did it tastefully.
  • On the other hand, the Nova pep band was just gawd awful. Both of my kids have been pep band members at other institutions, and they had to cover their ears. Maybe they were missing some key players.
  • Felt sorry for the dance team member who fell at center court during their first-half routine. Like Waiters, I was glad to see her back in the 2nd half and seemed none the worse for wear (she appeared to have benefited from some extra padding).
  • I found the NOVA PA announcer to be incredibly grating and over the top. During the player intros, my daughter turned to me and asked "what's with this guy's voice?" and I told her he must gargle with razor blades every morning. As is usually the case, the hype fell far short of the reality. Someone needs to tell this guy that the feigned enthusiasm sounds foolish when your team is down 20.
  • the W- center has great video boards, but they were only used for replays a handful of times, and only on those rare occasions when a Nova player made a good play.
  • Shout-out to the SU fans in Sections 216-217, who were loud and enthusiastic, including standing and clapping until the first bucket each half.
  • My estimate of SU composition was 35% - a number of fans I saw up-close were wearing SU clothing that wasn't obvious from a distance.
  • I haven't seen it discussed, but I assume the stoppage in the first half was because JB requested the officials look at the replay for an intentional foul on Melo (it appeared to me that one of the Nova players elbowed him in the mouth). I think it was as much JB working the officials after the questionable call against Fab on Saturday, and him protecting his player.
  • Lousy ride home: 2.5 hrs in a monsoon.
