and those who do.

An interesting interview with B1G commissioner Delany before two of his teams meet in the second game of today's doubleheader.

A key comment--lacrosse gives his conference the opportunity "to plant our flag along the Eastern corridor".
There has been no doubt that one of the B1G's strategies has been to establish a large east coast presence--see adding wounded sisters Maryland and Rutgers, and moving their hoops championship game to NYC in the near future.

The ultimate goal is not only to expand the Big Ten's reach, but also to diminish the ACC. The southern brains who are running the ACC must be ready to defend their northern turf, and somehow fill in that yawning gap between Charlottesville and Chestnut Hill.

They missed the boat on that.

"The southern brains who are running the ACC ..." So true, in more ways than one. Southern prejudice, southern entitlement, southern dismissiveness of anything not southern, southern hubris.

Sounds like he's at war or playing "RISK" with universities.

He's at a lacrosse tournament where JHU and UMD are playing, of course he is going to say that.

But he has also made the same point on other occasions. It is part of his, and his league's, planning.

The ACC isn't and shouldn't be nervous about losing any lacrosse market share - NE or otherwise. They are the best and it's not close.

I don't follow lacrosse that closely but is anyone really taking this "Johns Hopkins: B1G Lacrosse" concept seriously?

The whole conference identity concept has become irrelevant.

Denver in the Big East?

Hopkins and Maryland in the B1G?

Meaningless.

Does Hopkins, Maryland have to share any of the (relatively small I'd imagine ) lacrosse proceeds with their conference mates? (maybe only the ones who have lacrosse teams?)

(maryland as a whole is in the big 10)

Well aware, but it will always be an odd fit.

It's just a talking point. Maryland gives some TV and their mid-Atlantic alumni something to do on Fall Saturdays.

Say lax does something is the same as the Huskies justifying chick hoops.

Just a question, do you think his actions and talk are just that - pure talk- and the Big10 isn't serious about weakening the ACC while increasing their footprint nationally with particular emphasis on the Eastern seaboard?

We all like lacrosse, but talking about it in a serious way isn't really serious.

Some of the other sites out there talk about all this like a game or Risk. You can make the equal unsubstantiated case that UMD and RU were done to keep PSU happy. End of the day it doesn't really matter for us anymore. :noidea:

Lacrosse really has little to do with the point I was trying to make.

Which is--the B1G has designs on the northeast corridor. Not to dominate, or in any way to move from their natural base in Chicago. But they aren't having their hoops tournament in NYC for nothing. Whether their emphasis is on the positive--expanding their footprint; or negative--weakening their only real competition in the Northeast--is irrelevant. The powers-that-be in Greensboro should not cede the field to the invaders from the West.

I think we all understand the strategy behind adding Maryland and Rutgers to PSU and even JHU as a federated member in lacrosse. Just as we understand why the ACC has expanded with BC, Pitt, and SU with ND as a partial member playing 5 games a year against the ACC in football.

Ultimately though it will only matter for either conference if Maryland and Rutgers and two of BC, Pitt, and SU can perform in football and ignite interest in college football overall in the northeast.

Until that happens, what happens at a lacrosse championship, or MSG a week earlier than other conference bb tournaments are played, or at Barclays for two years in a conference bb tournament, or in a Pinstripe Bowl, etc., may be interesting and worth noting but certainly not bellwether moments.

Cheers,
Neil

I grew up in Skaneateles; spent 8 years outside Seattle... I am not a Southerner.. but I guarantee people in the northeast are FAR MORE arrogant, snobbish, and dismissive of those in other parts of the country than southerners. People on this board constantly denigrate people from other regions of the country ESPECIALLY from the south.

The ACC may not put top concerns on the north, but to suggest the south is guilty of hubris in comparison to the northeast is really laughable.

Just as an FYI to the Big 10 wanting New York. This year the Big 10 has advertisements all over Yankee Stadium as well.

Both leagues (ACC, B1G) are trying to claim NYC. They're both smart enough to know that college sports hardly makes a ripple in the ultimate pro town. But they're both afraid to abandon the city to the other.

C'mon. The south is guilty of the same - they just wrap it up in "hospitality"...
