Foreign Tours Every Year Now Allowed

Wonder if it would make sense to choose a European country with basketball talent and just go there every year. Similar to how the NFL is trying to promote certain teams in certain European markets. Essentially claim a stake in Serbia or something to try to increase our pipeline from there

They should honestly just allow more scrimmages in the summer between D1 teams. Cuse could take a West Coast swing play UCLA USC Long Beach and Pepperdine.

This. I don't understand it. They do it for Fall Ball Lacrosse. Have a 3 week window in July or August where teams have X amount of practices and can play X amount of games.

Fall Ball the LAX team either hosts a scrimmage, or takes a bus ride somewhere for a day trip.

You want to fly to the West Coast for a week?

I'd rather visit Europe or the Caribbean.

That Canadian tour we did back in the day, really helped that team gel.

Of course, with all the ICE nonsense going on,
not sure we’d want to risk international travel, and have one (or more) of our International players have issues with crossing the border.
Sigh.

No I don't want to fly to the West Coast (even though it might be a good NIL move). We have plenty of teams within a 4-5 hour radius we could play. The point is, somehow the NCAA allows it for Lacrosse for example, but not Basketball?

With new players every year on the roster, allowing this would only improve the product that gets put out.

Right. If NCAA loosens rules and allows summer scrimmages I would bet most teams would do that instead.

I wouldn't worry about ICE coming out as much as border crossing into Canada. They'll let you out no problem but going in can be tricky.

Maybe we should try Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands since US Passports aren't required? Certainly a selling point for players to get a free Island trip yearly. Looks like both have direct flights from Syracuse and maybe we can find the next Tim Duncan?

2 different pots of money.
I can't comment on how SU has done their previous trips, but I intimately know how another D1 school has funded theirs, and it was a majority through private philanthropy. So while you might think it would be two different pots of money (NIL versus operating expenses), when private philanthropy is the seed, I wouldn't necessarily call it two different pots of money.

Maybe SU Athletics completely funds their trips through operating budgets...but are those operating budgets, but whenever private philanthropy is involved, at some point the well will run dry.

Is the D1 school you're referencing a major revenue generating school, or one that breaks even or maybe even loses money to fund it's programs?

Just about every other year the ACC gets 2 games on the West Coast.

I went on the 2019 trip to Italy. It was clearly expensive: 15 players; all the coaches, most with spouses; many athletic department people, several with spouses; transatlantic airfares for all; high-end hotel rooms in four very expensive cities; meals at pricey restaurants; and a lot of nice "cultural/educational events," i.e. high-end sightseeing. As best I know, the cost of the trip came out of the Athletic Department budget. (NB: I and the other dozen or so fans on the trip paid our own way for everything. Trust me, it was expensive).
