Fran Brown Says - Part II

Stats only tell one side of the story. There were too many snaps where Steve looked confused and scared to throw. He is partly responsible for some of those missed protection calls. We won’t win games of significance if he only plays 1 good quarter.
He’s on start number 2 I think the kid bought himself some time after that comeback. Also we always are saying the best player on the team is the backup. Something I have learned is that we are always wrong and the coaches that see these players daily are always right. Fran is going to ride with the player that won the competition, put up a bunch of points on Tennessee and lead a comeback vs UConn.

This worked out in the end, but if we are going to beat some of those playoff teams we will soon face, Fran might need to keep his loyalty to his personal and not professional life.

I hear you, but I think the important part is what you started with. It did work out.

Personally I'd wanted Collins to come in too. But that 2 minute drill at the end of the game, watching Steve march down the field I knew we were going to get the TD and felt bad doubting him and HCFB. No guarantee that would've happened with a swap.

Guy got rocked 4 times and that was just the clean hits. The first one seemed to shake him up and he seemed more off after that one. Let’s not discount that he might have been shaken up after the first big hit and took awhile to settle back down.

And I’m not implying he was concussed and the staff threw him in to play anyway. Anyone that’s played football or any other sport where you get absolutely leveled, know how that can mess up your body for awhile where it’s just “off”.
Agreed. He seemed off after that initial big hit. To his credit, he shook it off, but I don't ing discount that it impacted his performance.

do we even know he is making the calls.. Some teams have centers some have QBs, Some have RBs

I was not necessarily meaning what happened on Saturday, but the general comment that he made in response to a question about making a change, and I think he meant at any time, he puts loyalty first. So I was thinking that is not always the best decision, and if he needs to make another one at some time, he does not let just loyalty get in the way.

I didn't want Collins to come into the UConn game, but I do want him to play the 4th quarter (or more) Friday vs Colgate, assuming we have a 4 TD lead by then.

He needs to get game experience. He will be needed at some point, and it probably will be a high pressure situation. It's not fair to have your first experience be a 3rd down and 6 at Clemson with 1:24 left in the game trailing by one score, or something like that.

Angeli looks like he was Notre Dame's talented backup four months ago. He can make the throws but he's not as fast as McCord at getting the ball out. I think we can really use this Colgate game. Work on some technique. Avoid the sacks. Give Collins a quarter to see what he looks like. Allow Willis to run over some people. If we lost the UCONN game, we'd be in trouble. Felt a lot like the Stanford game last year. This team will keep getting better week to week... and we have to.

that comes with glimpses of success. Pair that with fact that these guys are paid some pretty good money now and you are making yourself a target for criticism and high expectations.
I get that, but it seems a lot of people expect perfection at all times, which is lunacy. There is another team on the other side of the field that are doing their best to win too. Objectively, the team should be judged by the entire game and season, not on individual plays and possessions.

Look, i question decisions and mistakes during the game in the heat of the action based on frustration that something was missed. But, i have the ability later to realize that these guys can't always see what i can see from section 335 while im not being chased by a 300lb DL with 21 other guys running in mutliple directions. And also, that the coaches are intimately involved with the team and have an idea of what has a better chance of working short and long term with players.
I learned a long time ago as an ROTC cadet that not everyone responds the same to disciplinary tactics, incentives and punishments. In time, I also learned that what works one time for a person probably won't work every time.

Benching a QB midway through the 3rd quarter might appease the fans but be the worst thing for the player and the team.

Some of that may be because he held onto the ball too long or failed to identify the blitzer pre-snap. Things McCord was very good at doing.

I'm not sold on Angeli yet but it's early and he has time to improve.

Well it does seem like it would be a bit harder of a thing to do when he has been getting play calls late and all of the changes pre snap and alignment shifts etc. I don't remember the offense doing this that often last season. He doesn't exactly have much time to think before the snap to even think about his route options. Seems like that would affect things a bit. I think he may need to start looking for pressure and identifying his hot read first more often.

When you switch to the backup absent an injury situation you risk blowing up your whole team/chemistry. It never works and has to be avoided at all costs

I view it slightly differently, the offensive line was struggling which was causing Steve to rush throws and put the ball into dangerous spots. On the bench you have a QB who is better suited to escape the pocket and make plays with his feet which one would think could've added a spark to an anemic offense. Its not that steve loses his job forever but if you dont have it that day, you dont have it. Dungey came back after the benching against UNC and had a stellar rest of the year. Its a team sport with 105 scholarships, and every player could provide a boost if the circumstances are just right.

How do you know he is better suited, because you read it here, Brent axe told you? I'm going to assume the coaches who are around these players know better. Also there is more to it then just trotting the next guy up. the receivers have been working with Steve now so timing will be off...
