You know how this will play out. Syracuse will hire Brown and next year BC will fire Hafley and then hire Chesney who will then proceed to curb stomp Syracuse for the next x amount of years. That’s just the way things go for Syracuse.

Agree 100%. We should pin this.

In the final analysis, there are lots of good X and O guys out there. The supply of good OCs and good DCs is pretty good, especially if you are willing to pay a good salary.

There aren’t a lot of great recruiters out there. We have historically had a really hard time even getting pretty good recruiters to Syracuse, forget about retaining them for long periods.

The role of the HC is changing. I think that person is increasingly focused on recruiting. You need someone who is charismatic; a great people person who can build and maintain relationships so they can attract good players and retain those players for the long term.

That is what Fran brings to the table. It is a rare and special skill that power programs covet. You can’t build a great team without it.

Almost no HC calls the plays on offense, or makes the defensive calls. It isn’t a big deal Fran hasn’t done this. That is what your coordinators do.

The HC position is more about getting and retaining talent these days. Having a vision for where the program is going and making sure the program stays on track towards that. Brown is well suited for the new era of college football. We are ahead of the curve here. Other schools will eventually emulate us.

Assuming we officially get him!

Not sure if the Jags comment was a joke or serious but since 2017, he's been the OC for a high school team and the OL coach for three XFL/USFL teams.

He must have some serious dirt on Fran.

If we REALLY want to play big boy football, why aren't we poaching another P5 coach like the big boys do?
Is Notre Dame one of the big boys? They had their long time coach taken from them and then hired a coordinator. Is Oklahoma a big boy? They had their long time coach taken from them and then hired a coordinator. South Carolina has a former position coach as their head coach. Are they a big boy? Clemson also has a lowly former WR coach as their head coach. I think they're pretty big.

Good recruiters are good at communicating and good at relationships. I’d bet there are guys out there who he’s built connections with who will be all in on being on staff with him. There will be a lot of players in the transfer portal who he’ll have a good relationship with.

He reminds me of Tomlin.

It seems that the package of Fran with Jagodzinski was a big selling point for Wildhack. Convinced him of Fran's vision
Oh god tell me I am dreaming.

I would think Addazio would be more attractive. Jags? Is this 20 years ago?

NKR woke up this mornin spittin straight facts!!

I like his attitude. No excuses.

That being said. I think its going to come down to developement, particularly on offense. I'll trust him on Defense. Get that right? Perhaps he'll be able to give us a recruiting class in the 40's, or better. That has happened once in twenty years.

Are you aware that this article is from 2009? That's old enough to sneak away with some of dad's cigs.
hard pass on a guy who has been floating around the fake leagues for the last decade

Fran Brown would be a strong choice if this comes to fruition. He would be Syracuse’s best recruiter at head coach EVER, at least in my lifetime. Recruiting is his lifeblood, and he has done it well at Rutgers, Baylor, and Temple, not exactly the Easiest places to recruit at.

He is a key reason why Rutgers is going bowling this year. We also went bowling in ‘21, but that was because Texas A&M backed out due to Covid. Nevertheless, Going bowling two out of Schiano’s first four years is a huge accomplishment, especially considering we hadn’t gone bowling since ‘14. And Chris Ash ran the program right into the ground, and we had very little talent. Thanks in large part to Fran, that talent base was replenished quickly. That’s why Georgia hired him. He work’s exceptionally hard to bring in talent.

Browns signature recruits at Rutgers were Max Melton, Tyreem Powell, and Robert Longerbeam. All three starters, and future NFLers and Powell was playing at an All American level before his season was cut short due to injury. While at Rutgers, Fran Brown excelled at recruiting the 3 star recruit with 5 star impact. This is the skillset that will be especially relevant to Syracuse. I would expect him him to focus his recruiting in South Jersey, North Jersey, Philadelphia, DC, and VA.

The million dollar question is how well can he coach. The jury will be out on that question. I can tell you he has the attributes to be a successful head coach. When you meet him and shake his hand, I couldn’t help but think that he will be going places and doing big things. I can’t really explain it, but to me he has an aura and a presence about him.

He’s been working his entire career for this opportunity, and will make the most of it, imo.
I think this hire is similar to Oregon hiring Mario Cristobal, who also had not had coordinator experience, but was a huge success, which is why he was subsequently hired by Miami. Surround Brown with strong coordinators and strong assistants and y’all will be set.

Nothing but love for Fran Brown.
appreciate you checking in man. You're a hard core college football fan as there is and I think you nailed this situation. We're certainly hoping that what your analysis suggests comes to fruition (but hopefully avoiding Cristabals end game decisions :)). It was great meeting you all those years ago and glad to see you're still "in the game" hoping for the best for your own, much like ours, program struggling to emerge. Appreciate you checking in. Best of luck going forward.
