Fran on Orange Nation

Pena was top 15 in catches. But only 4-5 WRs at P5 schools caught as many.

If catches and output is all he cares about not many systems will get him the same results

He could have a great year catching 60 balls, not many slot guys had the yr he had last year

He makes more money, nothing else is a given
True. It’s 100% about the bag. He was targeted 100+ times by one of the best, most accurate QBs in the country. He likely does not get that anywhere else he may go. If he has 84 receptions next year even at Miami or Oregon I’ll be shocked.

For example, Restrepo actually had far fewer catches WITH Ward than the previous year, playing with a WORSE QB In 2023. There are no guarantees.

Pena loses ZERO value to the NFL getting targeted 80 times with 50 receptions here if the offense is different than last year.

There are 500 NFL scouts. They already know who Pena is. He will go as an UDFA and have a chance to prove himself no matter what happens in 2025. There are also 12 FCS receivers in the NFL. They find you if you are good.

What if some tried to build a NIL deal that had a non compete clause?

I pay you 1 million to NIL for my car dealership. But you cant sign any other NIl deals?

How well do non compete things hold up in court?
Happens all the time in broadcasting and other businesses.

Noncompetes are disfavored and probably wouldn’t be enforceable. For a noncompete to be enforceable in most circumstances, you need it to be restricted to a proximity, which would not be very effective for a nationwide sports league. I think the best approach is to have NIL deals be multiple years. The problem w that is, are you really going to sue a 18 year old from the inner city if they want to bail early?

Boobie and Jameer Thomas can replace Pena for a fraction of the price.
So certainly to a degree yes at this juncture but let's not forget some of the plays Pena made last year. Some of the catches were because of him making the tough play. He honestly caught everything around him and in clutch situations. I get we are salty about how this is going down with Pena but Johnson and Thomas have allot to prove before we can say they are an equivalent replacement. Pena is not getting paid what is being suggested because he is some first year scrub. Dude made every tough catch and clutch play we needed from him last year.

Fran knows what he wants as a culture for his team and is going about it perfectly in my opinion. We all need to back him with NIL support at a level that is reasonable, and he will have it competing in the playoffs. I would make a bet that there isn't a coach in D1 that can do as much with an NIL budget as Fran.

wow this inteview! Just freaking wow. Be sure all to watch it. Holy moly, this guy

Trebor is about trebor but said not in a bad way, some are leaders some are not, want to take a team on ones back, some are not more concerned with ones individual future, simple as that. No hard feelings, he gets it, people are people. Further Reading between the lines trebor thinks he needs to maximize $ right now and Collins may not be able to be at mccords level is his concern. Fran understands his need to secure his future to maximize those chances given all the variables at play and wishes him well. Will vouch for him too when the time comes.

Never seen a more transparent coach. How can I or we not support this guy in his endeavors. I'm officially schizophrenic on my support. Back in. Karma, in that I never ever can catch these interviews, didn't catch one in the spring season and missed the spring game due to NIL depression/apathy, etc., but all the planets aligned for me to unexpectedly catch it, think for a reason. Gonna keep two of my five tix, decision made.

edit: LOL he literally just talked to us fans after I wrote the above, me in particular saying he "gets you're up and down with us, understands that", LOL, adding in he so loves and appreciates Syracuse and in particular Syracuse fans. Best he's ever seen or words to that effect. Wow. This guy
Welcome back. ;)

Super telling that Fran didn't just say 'our offer stands,' he said 'leave'. That's super bold and IMHO it was the right thing to do.

Best part was Fran saying he wouldn’t tell on poachers; he’d come at ‘em. Will be curious to see what Jersey kids are on the roster that TP rolls to.

Yeah I loved that. I don't believe he makes empty threats and I do believe he's capable of following through.

Yeah, it makes sense.

Treb prolly wanted the same or more receptions, while Nixon is planning on spreading it out - again-
while also passing less and running more, including some designed QB runs.

So, between less passing overall -
because we no longer have the unicorn, Kyle (expletive deleted) McCord behind center-
and likely a less pass-centric attack,
Treb took his ball and went home.
It will be interesting to see if he ends up getting the numbers he wants elsewhere.

I’ve said it once, I’ve said it again - he’s building a culture and a program. It’s a long game. If you get hung up on every twist and turn, that’s your right, but in my opinion it’s a lot of emotional waste lol. There will be ups and downs when you’re doing what he’s doing.

Production wise - I couldn’t care less if Pena leaves because I’m confident that someone will step up. We have some pretty impressive depth now especially at WR. I’m just disappointed that a guy who was a reclamation project who then had his best season under Fran and was named a Captain would leave in this manner. I would also add that this was an opportunity for a SR leader and captain at WR to step up and help a young QB like McCord helped him last year. Another disappointing side of this for me.

Say its 1 million. thats nice money

after taxes its 600k ish?

If you can stick a chunk of that away for 30 yrs its gonna be a great nest egg, if you spend it now its a short term great amount of money.
Don't forget that NIL agents typically make 10-20% (before taxes).

On the 2M. I don't have trouble believing that number was floated, e.g., "hey bud there's a potential of $2M in it."

That's different from having a $2M contract ready to sign, which would be a recruiting violation before the portal is open anyway.

And to be clear, with how the Iamaleava situation is going, I do not think he will get whatever the maximum that seems to have been floated to him is.

One comment Fran made in his support of Collins really stood out to me: “We have three years with him, God willing. Hopefully at least two of them before he tries to go to the NFL or pull a Trebor on us at some point.” Using that phrase “pull a Trebor” to me was an indicator that this got personal for Fran. He could have just said “go into the portal.”

I’m also guessing that Fran is concerned that Trebor is more about “getting his” rather than being committed to the team goals. When Trebor is questioning to Fran if Collins is good enough, that seemed like a trip wire for Coach and Fran called him out on it.

Interesting that both us and Tenn told our best returning offensive player to leave when they tried to get more money.
Not really sure which player handled it worse - the second year QB who was guaranteed over 2 million already or the fifth year WR captain who wants about 2 million.
Should add interesting subtext to our game.

Definitely not DART.
And definitely hurt Fran personally.
Coaches aren’t robots, they have feelings too.
I back Fran 100%

You don't have to guess-Fran basically said it.
