They didn't get that one quite right. He said he wishes he didn't try so hard to get him confidence at the end of the half. Wishes we just ran the ball and went into the half at 10-7.

He also made a comment that didn't bode well for Nixon. EDIT, went back and got the quote, was a response to Axe asking what are some avoidable things that you saw this year. "Just the way we're going to operate offensively, you know, you can't just have that one system. The system piece that we're working on, being able to put in". Says it will be in the offseason, but that "it will be set in case this kid needs to play or that kid needs to play."

Kind of a double edged sword. Would rather you have one type of offense that you recruit and develop for, then plug and play. Having to prep for multiple systems (more or less) because your QBs are very different just seems like it's going to be harder.

Fran is def back next year and prob the year after. He's got a mulligan this year. Just can't repeat the same mistakes.

Let's beat BC, end the year on a high note and get cranking on fixing it for next year.

And he said the defensive problems were basically just tackling, nothing regarding the system. That was really the only super disappointing part of the presser for me. I know he won’t throw Elijah under the bus but man.

I think we should want an O similar to what we had in 2012. If you need to pass for 450 yards you can. If you need to run for 250 yards you can. But having to pass for 450 yards every game is to big of a risk. Hopefully that is Fran's thinking. But I worry he could go full meathead.

The last 7 games in 2012 when we were really clicking on O Nassib averaged 263 yards per game while our two headed monster at RB had 204 yards per game. Both were skewed by WV though.

I don't think you're going to be able to see most teams have "multiple" offenses ready to go based on who is healthy at QB. This year for us was a case in point: 2 new QB's expected to be the starter(s). Is there time to install two offenses AND get 2 new guys up to a high level with the offense? You want them to be running the bread and butter plays so that "one offense" can be executed well, and that is where all the reps have to go. If you have the luxury of guys who have been around a while, maybe. But I don't see it with the new portal environment.

The solution is easier than developing a new system. Just get better quarterbacks.

It’s going to take a very very long time to get that 70-7 perception nationally gone. Just such a failure all around.
I hear ya...we were severely embarrassed. And for an average program, that would be the near and midterm future for a program.
Awww sh#%... we got a BUT coming...

Villari Stonehouse Duce and OTHERS... you leaving them high and dry??
You gave the other team 70 friggin' points!! How you going to be remembered??
"Oh we lost 70-7 and THEN we lost to BC in the dome...on senior day".
Nobody is going to forget the ND 70-7 thrashing...but this is a golden opportunity as players AND coaches
to show what amount of pride you have in your performance and program.
You have but 1 chance...
That's all you got...
So...GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT!
Losing is not an option...

Nationally, 70-7 will be forgotten once ND is done this year until we play ND again. People don't remember much about irrelevant teams. Getting it fixed and winning 8 games next year changes a lot of perception. Sports fans are fickle.

Well that would assume the coach had previously said that was the plan, no? That seems to be an Internet theory, not reality.
That doesn't have to be the assumption. Fans or journalists could think it was logical to save his last free game to give him a start and see what he has rather than use him for just a few plays in a game where another QB gets te lion's share of the snaps. If the question is asked, the coach can tell us why that isn't logical. The whole point of asking questions should be to find out the mindset behind certain decisions.

AT this point I don't really listen to anything Fran says. Charlie Brown's teacher noise.

Get the product on the field better.

Yeah I don't want us to learn the wrong lesson here. Our offense needs QBs that can make the right pre-snap reads and get the ball to where the gap is in the defense quickly and decisively.

They whiffed on Collins being able to do that, but it seemed he had the tools to do it. Carney and Belin though are clearly more running QBs. Why have those be the guys you bring in? They're a mismatch from the start.

I think our "one type" of offense is a bit broken as well. We're constantly calling routes that, if picked, get housed. You can do that with NFL talent at QB because they wont make the throw unless the DB is back footed but you cannot game plan on MCCord being under center every year.

So in that regard I think we do need a 2nd, less risk prone" part of the playback. Only sideline passes should be deep, option and sweep runs to the outside, get mismatches in coverage between the tackle box if the defense cheats to edges. Literally 20 plays, 10 pass and 10 run, and practice only those until we do those well. Make them look similar and make them repeatable.

It's not as terribly difficult as we make it look. Give QBs a one read for the Edge or Safety if the play is outside or in. Do NOT hang the ball in the air 15 yards if it only travels less than 5 on the sticks when defenders are jumping everything. First read not there? QB can run or check down to RB that chips or releases. We're obviously not fooling opposition DCs at this point regardless so why not try and bully them?

Now fair amount of this is learning curve for the coaches as all 3 major coaches are not used to coaching talent deficiencies to the level we have anytime recently. We aren't currently nfl, UGA, Baylor, etc talent wise but we're still running a lot of those plays. None of those institutions will ever have the talent or depth gaps, due to draft or recruiting areas, that we've had this season once the 1s go out. Presume the coaches will learn but also hope we'll never run this lean again given our new found ability to recruit. Just a lean year after losing everyone last season and largely relying on Dino's last 2-3 recruiting classes and missing on a fair few portal guys, which are usually a bit if a crap shoot, as this year's upper classmen.

It can all be salvaged though if we hold on to top half of this year's recruiting class as well as the obviously talented players from last AND the coaches are humble and learn.

To repeat what I have said over and over, what Jeremy said also. Geting a good backup QB is going to be hard for most schools in the NIL/transfer portal world. Unless you are Ohio State. or Alabama quality. Even look at Penn State when they lost their QB. They fell off the rankings and even the bowl world possibly. It is hard enough to build a new team every year and have them ready and prepared for one system. Every year it is a new slate. All coaches are dealing with learning new tricks.

Tough to still have faith but I was raised to believe in positives.
Beat Bc.
People will forget quickly. The attention span of most people is about 2 minutes now with social media. It will be brought up when we play ND next year and the hardcore fans will remember but the average fan and most people won’t remember by next month. Heck most people cannot even remember who won the superbowl last year year.
