Fran's Game 2 Press Conference | UConn

I remember Tebucky Jones played offense when he first came to SU and was switched to defense. Worked out pretty good for him.
And he made the switch in one off season then ended up a first round pick. Freak athlete. Kinda crazy he wasn't better at RB.

Ray Lewis always said tackling is about desire. At this point the only fix is getting better players on defense who can shed blocks and aren't scared to tackle. Fran even said it may be fear related.
If they don't get ejected for targeting first. Guys aren't allowed to tackle like that anymore. I remember when Jones knocked WVU's TE out of the game. Guy never had a chance to take a step after catching the ball, Jones got there so fast and hard.

You had a lot of running backs and Konrad at fullback, the way to get on the field was safety.

I know all that, but when you look at his size and speed, it's a little surprising he couldn't beat out some of the guys that played in front of him. He was a year ahead of McIntosh, out weighed him by about 40lbs, and was fast enough that Pete Carroll tried moving him to CB. It doesn't surprise you a little that he wasn't the #2 guy behind Thomas in '96 and considered the favorite to start in '97? I suppose he just lacked the instincts. Regardless, it worked out great for him.

Tackling being about desire doesn’t mean head hunting. You have to be willing to embrace contact and win the battle.

but you said tar…

Yeah nvm. You got it, champ.
Ok. I guess I'll spell it out. The way that Darius and Jones laid out hits in that era would not be allowed today. There. Get the context now?

Yes, the comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek. Of course they'd be great today. I assumed the intelligent people on this board would pick up on that. My bad.

I love it when people comment on a post, completely misconstrue what the poster said, flub their words, then say the counterparty lacks intelligence.

As I said, you got it champ.

Me too. I guess you're talking about yourself? My comment had nothing to do with our tackling technique/desire, yet that's what you replied about. Maybe you meant to respond to a different poster. That's what I'll assume, champ.

Me watching the current argument in this thread

Dude...scroll all the way up. You replied to me first.

Just let it go, my guy. You sound really really dumb.

I just did. It's my bad. I was replying to the post above yours and somehow clicked yours. In the context of your comment my reply made no sense.

In watching several games this past weekend, one thing I noticed about tackling that drivers me nuts - players body-checking the ball carrier instead of wrapping them up. I saw that several times. The hope is that just the impact will knock the ball carrier down. If I were a coach, I would be screaming at a player for doing that.
coaches won't scream at them because that's what is being taught now to avoid late hit, unnecessary roughness personal fouls and targeting calls. Noticed it too as a big change this year apparently done for player safety on both sides of the hit. Kinda sucks but guess I get it the trend to overprotect now.

Wrapping up is more likely to result in unnecessary roughness than throwing their shoulder in them to knock them off their feet?

My father always told me to wrap up. when I didn’t I paid the consequences… a little bit worse than a few extra yards.. more like a few extra kids

I'm talking about the body check hits we're seeing on the qb mostly. Of course in the middle of field of action you wrap up as best you can on what I call a short field hit. That's easy to do with proper protocol and tackling style. The challenge is on hits you run a decent distance from here to there to make a tackle and to avoid the penalties is where we're seeing this new tackling style. Problem is, as you accurately note, that in the attempt to minimize penalty potential it makes wrapping up nearly impossible in that situation of the check style tackle.

I don't think the "new tackling style" or attempts to "minimize penalty potential" you described is a thing with this staff. They consulted and/or visited with NFL staff and other college programs (Iowa in particular) to address technique and drills. The emphasis all preseason, especially in open field situations, has been on taking proper angles, wrapping up, and exploding through the tackle "with violence." FB will frequently go to the Oklahoma drill if the players are not being physical enough in tackeling.

I'd sure others who have been at practice can confirm this.

Brown said recently: “Everybody can say the normal tackling drills, things of that nature. But at some point in time, you’ve got to take your facemask and put it on his facemask and be willing to go hit. “I’m just not aware of why we’re diving at legs and all that. We just didn’t play the right brand of football.”

No doubt and was attempting to state as such for most tackling situations.

But not with the qb in the backfield in passing situations. There’s no doubt they’ve been taught what we saw Saturday, avoiding lunging and leading with the helmet and doing more the check style.
