Fran's Game 7 Press Conference | Pitt

One has to be a degenerate to gamble on coaching hires.

Yes, I’m judging.
And not to mention most major books don’t even offer these odds. It’s not a market I’d trust.

But folks are clearly launching into insane territory already on this thread. The notion that Fran would go to Va tech or Kentucky is the funniest one yet. There are only seven black head coaches in power conference D1 football (none in the SEC) and Kentuckys going to hire one? Comical. Those boosters aren’t cozying up to Fran for the same reason some of our supposed fans keep claiming he’s not authentic or that he’s a snake oil salesman.

Guys, did any one of you actually watch and listen to the press conference???

If you did, you actually should be more confident that Fran is our coach, and won't be someone else's

Fran came in with a lot of energy, hyped up, excited to play Pitt. Before one question was asked he stated how thankful he was to be coach at Syracuse. He said he spent part of the weekend keeping an eye on other Syracuse athletic programs that have had success

Then the dumb question from Chris Carlson to throw a wet blanket on everything: "coach, Is Ricky your starting QB?" What an asinine question. And Fran just about treated it as such. It shouldn't have been a question. Fran has been saying all along that Ricky is still the QB. He could have asked, "Have you seen any improvement from Ricky over the bye week?"

And then, after that nonsense, Fran is still trying to stay positive, and then Javon comes with the next asinine question about "what kind of assurances can you give Syracuse fans that you will stay if a bigger program comes calling?" That question really missed Fran off. Hence the mumble about Javon "trippin." Fran has always spoke of Syracuse as a big time program. Javon has made comments in the past that have shown he doesn't think that highly of Syracuse ...hence Javon's question. Javon single-handedly takes the rest of the air and energy that Fran had brought to the conference right out of the room. He could have asked, "Fran with Franklin's firing, has anyone from Penn State reached out to you?"

Fran is still thinking about the stupid question after the press conference is over, so he makes a comment to Javon, like "hey, what are you doing?" Fran's head is not even in the space of leaving, so the question threw him and made him angry.

I question anyone else's interpretation of this presser

We all recognize Fran isn’t going to Penn state right? Like the boosters aren’t going to pull the trigger on someone who has been a head coach for 17 games… our fears shouldn’t be if he goes Penn state but instead about the downstream impact of whomever they hire

Fran ain’t going to Nebraska either.

Or Indiana.

I’d be pretty shocked if State Penn doesn’t land either Rhule or Cignetti.

Agree with this take. Fran gets very annoyed when folks downplay the level of job he already has.

Also. All the other reporters wondering about the team and about Pitt.

Meanwhile, I think it was Brent Axe: why is a football coach holding a football?

😂😂
I'm glad he asked that. It seemed weird that he randomly walked out there with it. I thought maybe he was going to announce some special meaning.

I have zero concerns Fran is going to Penn State, particularly if Collins remains our QB. I can't see us being better than 5-7 in that scenario.

Agree. Folks have to remember who are on the search committees. Usually a prominent booster or two plus AD and someone else from the AD and or overall board. To get the financial commitment to pay that buyout to start…means they have boosters on board and will be very involved in the decision.

I don’t think Fran’s leaving but I will say Dougie maintained until the day he left that Syracuse was his “dream job.” Coach speak isn’t exactly surprising, you don’t tell your boss you’re looking for another job, you tell him you’re leaving when you took it.

Putting everything else aside, Javon really is a grade A moron.

Dude sucks.

it is the reporters duty to get the questions their readers want to know the answers to.

Sure, but it's more about getting answers than it is goading him. I wanted it asked, but I wanted it asked tactfully. As it were it just pissed Fran off which I think it may have given people the wrong impression.

I'm glad he asked that. It seemed weird that he randomly walked out there with it. I thought maybe he was going to announce some special meaning.

Oh I don't have a problem with it. Just thought it was funny. The whole thing was odd.

My read was it was a little like a fidget spinner or stressball. That conference was obviously going to suck why not hold something you like.

I can see PSUmaking a move and ending up with Matt Rhule. NFL coaching experience. Won 10 games at Temple, twice! Won 11 at Baylor. Has Nebraska trending up. PSU guy. A pretty good Plan B.

But if the A.D. ends up with Fran Brown, with 13 wins in his career, neither of them will have a very long career there. As CFB becomes more like the NFL, guys are not going to get 4-5 years for success. Win quickly and often... or go. PSU would fire the AD and Fran all at once in Year 2 and not feel remotely guilty.

Does anyone wonder how questions about the head coach potentially leaving for another school affect the players focus and vibe heading into this weekend’s game? Think of that and maybe you’ll understand why that question might be upsetting to Fran.
Really??? In this atmosphere of big money college sports?? Coaches leaving jobs all the time. Players focus?? Players are focused on NIL themselves.

In reading these posts , I’m struck by all the different takes. Fran hasn’t proven anything. We can’t lose Fran he’s the best. AD’s would want to see more big time wins from Fran.

They’re all correct and wrong at the same time. Peen St. hired Franklin after two winning seasons at Vanderbilt!! No Natty no SEC championship.

My take is if Fran can’t take the “tough” questions from the roughly 5 reporters at SU pressers he better think twice about PSU or any other Major player in CFB.

And if he doesn’t start winning again then it will be Dino ground hog day. An irrelevant coach in charge of an irrelevant program. Remember those Dino postgame speeches that used to go viral? Or when Mike and Mike predicted Dino wasn’t long for Syracuse after the Clemson win in 2017? Or Dino to USC after 2018?? That fell apart pretty quick after not winning again in 2017 and getting the doors blown off against Maryland in the second game in 2019.

Things change pretty quick in big time college sports. Just ask James Franklin. Or Fran Brown after your qb tears his Achilles.
