Free Admission and Food on Saturday for SU Students

I agree with Stephen Bailey here. If I had paid for season tix this year, I'd be pretty unhappy if other students were getting them for free. If there are to be free tickets, it should be implemented before the start of the season... so you don't have a situation where some are paid for... and some are free.

Also, if there are free tickets, how does the school know in advance how many students will show up... and therefore how many seats to offer to the public (this would certainly be an issue at well-attended basketball games). There would have to be some kind of mechanism whereby students would have to pick up their tickets in advance of the game... so the school would know what its inventory was.

Agree that the free ticket system would start next year.

And I'm pretty sure if a ton of other schools in the country can figure out how many to set aside for students getting in for free, SU could figure it out as well.

Really?

No idea what this post means. You were talking people in general, student or not. I replied in kind.

Man, we really need the game to kickoff. So much talking past each other.

I like the idea of students getting free tickets. CTO's point about doing this before the season begins is spot on, as well.

Here's an idea: incentivize attendance. Students who come to football games (and any non-rev sports games or other on-campus activities) get points. Those points can be redeemed for reserved seats for bball, concession vouchers, crap from Nike, access to more exclusive University events (concerts, etc) and on and on. Hell, make attending all SU home games worth 1 academic credit. (I took a 4 credit class at SU that was building a website. It literally took me one hour of work stretched over 14 weeks. Attending 6 home games would have been more of an effort.)

Dunno how many ppl here know the app Foursquare, but they put themselves on the map by gamifying who can show up to a certain location the most. And do you know what people were fighting over for that distinction of "checking in" the most at a particular spot - a virtual badge with a crown on it. That's it.

It's not rocket science. Just put a freakin carrot on a stick.

I agree. You're talking in circles.

As a former Student Activities Director, I could weigh in on this, but there's no perfect answer. You're going to hear both sides complain.

"I paid and people got in for free - I am pissed"
" If I could get in cheaper or for free - I'd go - I am pissed"
"WHAT? You are raising the Student Activities fee? I don't even go to events - I am pissed"

I heard a lot during my time in Student Activities because we looked at all of these avenues. I'm not going to go into more detail, because I don't want to have to defend a response for the rest of the day. This board has been really touchy over the past couple weeks. We need to have a group cookout, take a shot, and give each other a hug. ...Wake Forest game I propose...

i think you should take whatever textbook you read and and hit yourself in the head with it until you forget it. i can do it for you. FOR FREE
Yeah, but you won't do it because it's free. But for $5...

The third scenario you described happened how many times?

The cost of college goes up every year. Don't think people would notice that as much as part of the tuition.

Pat - you are right. College costs are increasing every year, at a faster rate than they've ever done so. There are a lot of people in this world that will complain about the smallest charge. every situation is different, but I received phone calls every summer when there were increases.

SUFan - Do I remember an exact number? No, I don't. I can tell you I always had the first week marked off on my calendar for when bills were sent home over the summer, because enough people would call to complain.

Other schools can manage to offer free tickets to students, but it's not worth arguing over.

That's not what I've said in this thread at all.

For the record, when Maggie's had Free Beer night on a random Thursday back in 1995, I didn't pass by the sign and think "nah, zero value". I locked the brakes on the car, and ran in there as fast as I could.

We need one of these specials. Talk about a hostile environment.

When maggies had Beer night on any night between when you started college in 1986 and when you finished in 2007, you locked the brakes on the car, and ran in there as fast as you could

I'm envisioning it differently, like, suddenly the driver's side door opens and a dude barrel rolls out while the car just keeps going.

It used to be that way. All sports. FB and BB, you had to go to Archbold Gym with your activity card and pick up your ticket; all other sports you just showed the activity card for admittance. That all changed when they built the Dome. That's the first I can remember having to pay separately for student seats.
Back even longer ago, FB required picking up the tickets at Archbold but all you needed was to show an ID card at the gate in Manley to get into a BB game.

We see this problem during basketball season, when the south end of the upper deck (303/304) is mostly empty for a number of conference games. SU holds the overflow seating open for student season ticketholders; when a number of them don't show up, there are a thousand other ticket-buyers seated on the far side of two empty sections. And that's our popular sport, with tickets that have been paid for. Free seats would make this more difficult to account for.
