Did we all watch the same game. Yes Bell killed us but the reason Donnie wasnt playing is his defense was horrible. How many times can people drive bye him and score with little to no effort. If he played defense like he plays offense then we will be set but he isnt. They drove bye him at will all game. When he went out we went on the run. You dont change anything when your on a run lol. Maybe he will realize defending people will get u on court more. He has a lot of lazy in him and i agree it dont help with Bell playing lazy either. Jogging back on defense should never be allowed. Honestly for now on, Coach should have a play defense or sit moment. We may not win as much but in order to change the culture, u have to make your point that it wont be tolerated period. If Freeman played with same intensity as Davis, Kid would be all-world.

I didn't notice that as much as I should have. I'd love to see the film on this because I'm sure you're right but the whole thing, especially in the beginning, on D looked so swiss cheesy I couldn't tell who was to blame.

Freeman is four games into D1 ball. When he was asked and had a mismatch on O, he cooked his guy.

The biggest issue on D is the coaching. Blaming a rookie four game in that is depended on for offense and currently has an 18 PER.

His Game Score metric was fourth on the team behind JJ, Eddie and Jyare.

So, yes, his D is bad. I wouldn't call the kid lazy. I think he is poorly coached on D. I think all our guys are poorly coached on D.

We can talk about his D needing to improve (which it does), but at the same time Chris Bell in his 3rd year still plays little defense and looks like he doesn't even try at times. If playing D is required to stay on the court why is Bell playing the entire second half. Defense aside - Freeman definitely rebounds the ball better and might have helped prevent some of those second chance put backs Bell allowed.

His issue was energy. You don't coach energy. Stop blaming the coach every time a player is blown by.

If you count rebounding as a part of defense, which you should, then Freeman is our best rebounder on the year, so at least he gets half of it right.

How many putbacks did Texas have right over Bell because he refused to fight for the board?

The worst defensive player is Bell, no comparison. For a forward a big part of defense is rebounding on the defensive end, and Bell is one of the worst I have ever seen. I really can't think of anyone to compare him to.

The momentum kills, no boxing out, not staying in front of his man, not playing physical, no anticipation, no lateral movement, can't pass, can't dribble, bitches after every bad play, smiles when he makes one good play.

Freeman is legit, 15 minutes a game is uncalled for and frankly embarrassing when you have a guy like Chris Bell out there. This isn't the first time an announcer trashed his game from tip to buzzer. He sucks.

This could have been a Chris Bell post... a player in year 3 instead of a true frosh in game 3. If sitting Freeman was about the "culture", Bell wouldn't be anywhere in sight.

Play the frosh with far greater upside who brings so much more to the table, and let him acclimate. Bell is a nice piece as a shooter, but that's it.

Given Eddie's passing skills, there should be multiple plays drawn up for Donnie to get touches. Eddie can pull guys out of the post and Donnie can cut to the lane, which will likely be a mismatch given Donnie's height. The lack of movement on offense is frustrating. Donnie can't camp out on the perimeter and expect to score. With Davis or Taylor out there and not being legitimate offensive threats, Donnie needs to touch the ball most possessions. I can see the offense flowing with JJ, Eddie, Donnie, Davis and/or Taylor, and Bell or Moore.

One of the issues with kids who are projected (or self project) to
be an early out to the next level is how defense is even a factor
for them. There's no arguing that offensive skills and overall
athleticism are much coveted by the NBA. That might be an
over simplification, but the top level kids know that's where
their bread is buttered, so that's where the mindset is.

Compounding the problem (vs years ago) is the real emphasis
on individual player development as opposed to an emphasis
on team success. I won't call it selfish necessarily, but the portal
has shown a bright light on where priorities currently are.

Eddie said last night that guys need to cut more when he gets the ball. Stop standing around and watching. He will find you. Davis is the most consistent cutting to open spots.
That's exactly what Jay Williams was saying during the game on a couple of occasions.

He’s a top 10 talent, you cant sit him and then expect him not to hit the portal. We have to let him play through some things.

We did end up playing a lot of zone to. He could’ve maybe played those minutes.

His offense, rebounding and straight athleticism is needed on the court. This is an offensively challenged team. We just scored 66 points.

In his 15 minutes he was 4-6, 2 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 9 points, no turnovers. That seems like good production per minutes played.

Certainly greater effort on defense is necessary. Offensively I think ideally Freeman would be getting the ball in the low post. What I see happening is Eddie starts out down low but when he moves to the high post nobody is filling the low post, they're all out on the perimeter. Any time Eddie sees the best option as him taking his guy 1 on 1 to the hoop from 15 feet it means no one is moving or cutting for him. Freeman should be back filling Eddie and they should be able to develop a very nice high/low connection. If they do that the perimeter will open up for kickouts. We're 4 games in. I was much more impressed by this loss than I was their 3 wins.

Our offense in the first half was giving the ball to Lampkin then parking 4 guys on the 3 point line.

I don't really see a reason to play Bell over Freeman when he isn't hitting threes. Donnie has a more diverse offensive skillset and is a great rebounder. Donnie is also longer and i'd prefer him defensively if we are in the zone. It also is way more beneficial to play our 5 star freshman and to watch him develop than our junior who really hasn't shown much growth.

Yeah and i agree but our defense was really good today except for the young fella and yes ur right about his age and all. watch him move on offense and then watch him move on defense. on o he is fast tall and athletic as heck. on d he is slow and gets blown bye often. Not same athlete. thats being lazy. Im not downgrading or calling the kid a bad name. Its truth thats all. i have said it a lot when he plays d hard and with his offense, he can we all world player. Being a young guy, could be the next game he picks it up.

great point there.

When one is as smooth as Freeman it looks like no effort is being given. That is not the case. he does need to improve on defensive end to have an NBA career. Most Frosh, even the five stars who are big guys struggle as they fill out their bodies. There was a great quip from one of the announcing crew last night who said almost the same thing. The young guys have to learn to guard men who are stronger than they are and the best way to do that is added good weight while retaining athletic quickness. I was not there and was unable to hear any defensive communication. One of the most difficult things to learn is not to track the ball but to guard your man while keeping the ball in your peripheral vision as long as possible.

i agree should have been both honestly.

ok its just when he was man up the guys go right bye him and it looked like he wasnt really trying and on offense he looked really athletic. I could be wrong and hope i am.

I think we watched a different game. Our D was abysmal for the entire first half and early in the second. It was a team effort of suck, not just Freeman.
