Second Year Stars for Syracuse (ESPN; Hale)
Class recap: After coach Doug Marrone left for the NFL, the 2013 signing class stumbled to the finish line and wasn't ranked among ESPN's top 75. Only a handful of true freshmen played regularly last season, including safety Darius Kelly and wide receiver Brisly Estime. Both started for the Orange in their Texas Bowl victory over Minnesota.
Brisley Estime (20)
Second-year star: WR Brisly Estime (5-foot-9, 170 pounds)
Recruiting stock: A three-star speedster from Delray Beach, Fla., Estime was ranked as the No. 105 cornerback in the country by ESPN after playing both sides of the ball in high school. Syracuse recruited him as a receiver.

Jerome Smith (45)
SU HC Scott Shafer Happy Smith Has an NFL Shot (ESPN; Adelson)
Syracuse running back Jerome Smith was one of 36 underclassmen to go undrafted last week, a record number that has brought renewed attention to the whole topic of declaring early for the NFL.
But Smith was in a unique situation. He already has graduated and went into the draft knowing full well there was a chance he would not get selected. Once the draft ended Saturday, he signed as a free agent with Atlanta and joined former teammate Marquis Spruill, drafted in the fifth round.

Another strategy which may be used sparingly is for ACC teams to play each other as non-conference opponents in a pseudo 9th game. So far it looks like the pairs of teams most interested in pursuing this are NC State/Duke and Syracuse/Miami.

Jay Bromley
Giants Continue Syracuse Pipeline Drafting SU DT Jay Bromley (.com; O'Gorman)
Tom Coughlin doesn’t forget his alma mater when the NFL Draft rolls around.
The Giants head coach proved it again last week with the surprise selection of Syracuse defensive lineman Jason Bromley with his third round pick, the 74th of the draft.
The Giants took Syracuse offensive tackle Justin Pugh with their first pick a year ago, and he started every game and made the NFL All-Rookie team. The selected Orange quarterback Ryan Nassib who spent the season with the Giants’ reserves, three rounds later.
“Bromley went to a great school, played defensive tackle and had 10 sacks, which is really interesting when you stop and think he’s a kid playing basically a three technique (defensive tackle) who has 10 sacks,” said Coughlin, a running back for the Orange (1965-67) who played in the same backfield with NFL Hall of Famer Floyd Little and ex-Giant Larry Csonka.
“I thought they were joking when I got the call,” said Bromley, who was with the Giants draft picks and rookie signings this week at rookie camp. “Imagine, my home team, my favorite team, Big Blue.”

Size/Speed Combo
Bromley can move for a big man. He ran a solid 5.06 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. The Giants timed him even faster.
"The guy ran 4.9 and some change at the combine so he can get up the field and finish on the quarterback," general manager Jerry Reese said.
Only one 300-plus-pounder, Princeton's Caraun Reid (Lions), officially posted a time at the NFL Combine in under 5.0 seconds. Bromley was clearly one of the faster defensive tackles in this draft with size, and the speed showed on his game tape as well.
On this play, he beats Clemson guard David Beasley with sheer quickness off the ball. He doesn't get the sack or actually receive credit for making a play, but Beasley probably should have been flagged for a holding penalty and, at the very least, Bromley threw quarterback Taj Boyd off his spot and forced the incompletion.
