Wow, Syracuse is sure allowed to play physical. If their football team hits half as hard as their basketball team it will be a long day in Carter Finley this fall.
Having lurked on a few ACC boards today there is discussion about if the finesse style of the ACC is hurting their teams in the NCAA and whether they need to adopt a more physical style like the Big East teams. Interesting. UVA board was debating this topic too.
 
There's a post on the PEEGs Indiana board about last night's game being the most physical he's seen in 45 years. I think its safe to say the game we played last night from a Syracuse perspective was the most physical game since about 2 weeks ago in NYC.
 
I think it's always been the opposite. The thug BE teams have never done well in the tournament, mostly because you have to score to win the tournament. SU is not a thug BE team. We have always been a finesse team. Teams are usually trying to beat us up to slow us down. This year we have more of a 'trenches' team based on solid defense. Duke and UNC usually do well because they always have super talent and can score. I think the ACC style is more suitable to the tournament. The last two BE teams to win it all played a wide open game. When's the last time you saw a BIG team do well in the tournament (without the refs helping)?
 
We played tough inside but I would hardly call SU a physical team. They're lucky they didn't play a few other teams. Besides, Opadicko plays physical for a guard with all his bumping and grabbing.

Saw that same post, there a few posters who were shocked at how physical it was, you could tell they certainly were not used to that type of game.

There's some first rate comedy on the peegs board. One guy thinks we put a bounty on their guys. Others likening us to Wisconsin. Others saying Indiana beat themselves with turnovers. Apparently the defense did nothing to cause the turnovers.

ya and we put a magic spell on their 2 hobbit sized guards. triche and carter-williams were a mismatch for Yogi and Hulls from the get go.
 
To some extent I think that over the years as the BE evolved, the officials became victims of the physical play. Last night Rak picked up two fouls before he broke a sweat, he came out and BMK picked up a quick one. At that point they had to be thinking to themselves they may have to sit our 2nd center so they eased off a bit. Fans come to see players play, not sit.
 
I think it gives good perspective that we think of ourselves as a finesse BE team and other conferences see us as physical. Then again i guess Mason Plumlee is ACC for physical and I think most BE teams would tear him apart in the paint.

If they're hoping our football team doesn't hit half as hard they are in for a rude awakening. They should be counting their blessings that Shamarko is going to be in the NFL next year.

How about Sheehy? He had a handful of someone's jersey on every single play.
 
There are two kinds of "physical" games, imho. The clutch and grab slow down style of Pitt and Butler and then there is the up-tempo kind of mauling the Celtics made famous, which is what Louisville and UConn try to do. I always wondered why we didn't do more of the latter since that is the "physical" style that suits us the best.

physical means you body alot. Our guards up top body less then any team in teh big east, and our bigs don't go into opponents bodies they go away from or hold their ground unlike alot of those other big east teams. Only on weakside blocks or recovering defense we jump into.

We are not that physical and tend to go with skinnier pf's.
I don't know what game they were watching, just because you block shots like a monster it doesn't mean your physical. Fab was the best shot blocker in the big east last year and wasn't all that physical much more finesse. We looked good you don't have to tell a tall tale because of it.
 
I thought the B1G was plenty physical, particularly at the top, this year. I didnt see IU players whining during the game or after. Fans, us included, sometimes are less than completely objective. I would ignore those comment immediately post game.

Michigan St. has had a nice run under Izzo with a NC and 5 other final fours. I don't recall any games where the refs bailed them out.

It's very simple.
If they don't like it, they should stay out of the lane.

Meanwhile...that's nothing compared to what we're going to have to lay on that big schlub Gardner today.
He's busy yakking about throwing his weight around again.

Agree wasn't all that physical just contrasted shots, he always started his motion low and allowed our length to get hands on the ball very easily. He was intimidated and it showed

Speaking of intimidated. I've never seen 3 consecutive games where opponents, at some point in the game, we're so intimidated. Montana lost as soon as they saw the jersey said syracuse. Cal started off terrible and IU was shooting scared. It's the tournament! you're supposed to be ready to play.
