the game was a blow out, but watched to see any signs of stuff we might be able to do.

Wake got of sync because of the 3 early Int's but was surprised to see that ran pretty well through the first quarter.

drive 1 : harris for 7, then on 2nd and 3rd and short tried to run up the middle
drive 2: int on first down on just a terrible throw into coverage
drive 3: harris for 3,6,7,5 and a first down taken away with a WR hold 10 yds down field. a couple small gains and a Int on 3rd and 4.
drive 4: harris for 0,13,4,2,7 then a first down INT..

28 zip and FSU had 100 yds of offense. Harris had 57 yds and 13 carries.. he ended up with 16 carries and 66 yds.

2 of the INTS were seem/slant routes. they didnt try any of the bubble screens, not one . so something on the film told them to change the play calls from what we saw. they ran fine and all the INTs came on first down play action throws. FSU only got pressure one time in this spurt and Wake followed all of this with a first down fumble to go down 35-0. wake went from the 25 to the FSU 44 and punted and that point of the game had more yds but was getting mauled.

on D wake went with no pressure , never sent more than 5 guys and winston stood around with the 2-3 progressions and killed them with slow developing plays.. FSU had the ball 4 times in that 2nd quarter and only on the last drive did anything and thats was because of 2 Wake penalties on D.

FSU played press coverage across all 3 wr's almost every play. played mostly a single high safety so we need to get a WR open and complete a pass, stop overthrowing everything. and we need to block the DE as FSU does not really blitz, they played 6 in the box a bunch against the 3 wr set.

you have to think they will play the run much harder on us

So you're saying there's a chance.

thanks for the breakdown. I really think if we take care of the ball we can keep them under 40 points and im not trying to be funny. Im thinking low 30's. and low teen's for us

No one has held them under 40 all season, so you'd have to consider it a moral victory.

You'd also have to feel pretty good if we could score 14-17. BC is the only outlier, scoring 34, but might have just been one of those days for FSU. Hard to be perfect for all 12 games, usually one or two road games can cause a few issues. Even at that they held BC under 400 yards of offense.

If we lose 38-17, we should move into the Top 10. If we lose 49-7, well, join the club.

We have to do what BC did. Run it between the tackles with Rome and Morris. Our wr's aren't going to have a chance in hell getting open against their press coverage so don't even waste our time. Try the power run game, which will help protect the football. We cannot turn it over.

I love how our defense has responded the past 2 games. The injection of Whigham, Morgan, Kelly into the secondary has been a game changer for us. I am really excited to see how we match up against FSU. I really want to see us come out balls to the wall, and if we go down let's go down swinging. I have an odd feeling we can keep this semi competitive for a half

Just run the ball and try to shorten the game, for some reason I see pick Six for Fla St on one of those quick Brisley passes. I hope we stick to our game plan and don't try getting back into the game by passing 50 times.

I am hoping we run that play in the first offensive series but fake the screen and have Ashton fake the block and run a fly.

I agree, I also like that the players and coaches see how they stand against a great team... As long as it's not a completely demoralizing defeat, I think it can only serve to help us grow. I too hope we go down swinging and win some small battles within the game!

the only rcvrs wake got open were the ones breaking the press coverage. AB has been getting better at that.. West does it about twice a game.. I wonder if we send guys in motion to try and help clark/kobena/estime get off the LOS. wake also didnt run bunch sets which I think we better be planning on. limit TO's and big plays and you can make it a less ugly game.

I honestly am not even worried about demoralizing defeats - we had one in GT, and bounced back fine.

After watching parts of a few FSU games I fear Hunt and interceptions. I hope we severely limit our passing game. The FSU defensive backs are fast, quick, and agile. Hunt will have to realize that the way they close on potential receivers is unlike anything he has seen so far this year.

He's got to be real careful with his throws. I see potentially bad things when we put the ball in the air.

Anything can happen in a game, especially a college game. An injury, couple of turnovers and a few close calls and there goes a 20 point swing. That is the stuff of upsets.

However, we are what we are and I don't think Hunt is going to suddenly turn into Donovan McNabb. We have to do what we do well and hope for the best. The problem we face is that for a defense like FSU, we are pretty easy to game plan. They will take away that flat/screen pass (and yes, watch out for a pick 6). We aren't going to handle their line like we did Wake, NC State and Maryland's so running will be difficult.

Our best hope lies with the D. If we can get a push from the front 4 (3?) we could be competitive. If we can't, I just don't see the secondary holding up on slow developing plays for 60 minutes.

We are 34th in total defense but FSU is 4th. We are 83rd in total offense and FSU is 9th.

The guys will play hard and with pride but FSU may have the best team they have ever had and they have had some good one.

Let's hope for a few of those things in paragraph 1 (no injuries) to go our way.

Defensively, I would drop everyone back and make Winston pick you apart in long drives like he did against Miami, or make FSU take yards on the ground. You're talking about a kid with Heismans in his eyes now (possibly?) and who has a tendency to get greedy downfield. Also, against Wake Forest he threw an interception because he was trying to force a catch to our back up tight end, who is a great kid and a team player who switched positions for us, but who is a terrible tight end. He could have walked for the first down, but Jameis basically risked his Heisman chances by trying to get a teammate a special moment. So I would drop back and make him take the easy throws and hope for a bad decision or a fumble. Our running backs are excellent, but they aren't home run hitters. If you make them take yards on the ground, they'll get them at 4, 5, 10 yards a pop, but they aren't likely (other than our 3rd string guy Karlos Williams) to go 70 yards on you. We haven't fumbled but maybe a couple times this year, but you never know.

Our defense came out against Boston College very unfocused and undisciplined. Our offense came out against Wake the same way. Word is the Wake post-game from Jimbo was as if it was a loss.

I think Syracuse needs to come out with the philosophy that they aren't going to give FSU anything easy, and that IF FSU comes out unfocused they can be in position to hang around. No blitzing, no risky passes on offense.

This is a game that FSU could potentially have their mind on other things, and Syracuse would need to be in position to take advantage. If FSU comes out on point, there is nothing Syracuse can do to stay in the game anyway, so just don't play a game that will get you blown off the field by a C+ Florida State effort.

I agree this Florida st team is good. I would love to see them beat Bama. Great for the ACC.

I can tell you right now. There will be blitz packages coming from us. We are not going to sit back. I totally get what your saying. If you watch our clemson game ( that validates your point) but we will not make as many mistakes on defense as we did against clemson. Cuse have fast athletic LB's and a dynamic blitz scheme that will cause some discomfort. We are a pressure team. thats what we are going to do. FSU is too talented and discipline to beat but we will attack you. You can believe that

That's certainly correct. Just like Shafer said before Clemson we aren't changing for anybody. And I don't blame him, I'm interested to see how our improved secondary holds up

I hope so. Winston has eaten the blitz for lunch all year long. His stats are much better against the blitz than not. Teams keep doing it though, so I hope you guys do as well.

you guys just hope that one of the few times we hit him that it doesnt end your title hopes.

Unless we play GT.

That's not what the SU coaches and players have seen on tape - they said most teams haven't. That may be because he eats them up - but changing our philosophy now? No way. We did vs GT and failed. We'll go down guns blazing.

He will be knocked around. It's what we do.

Also - if teams do or if they don't - it hasn't seemed to matter to the scoreboard and the offense. I'd just as see an aggressive D than a sit back and let him pick you apart. What do we have to lose?

im not sure how much blitzing most teams did against FSU. the FSU oline and the WR have scared most people off from even trying but sitting back isnt really stopping winston either. wake/mary/nc st dont blitz. clemson doesnt all that much. bc/pitt/miami is all thats left.
