Future of College Sports

Being the best cheater does not make Saban a sage.

I have two viewpoints on this. One is that Saban did a great job encouraging his players to graduate, and Alabama was near the top of the SEC when he was coaching. He’s got the track record to have credibility when talking about education. However - there’s probably no school at greater risk in the NIL era of losing more relevance than Alabama. The GDP of Alabama is far behind Florida, Georgia, and Texas - it’s going to be hard and potentially impossible for Alabama to keep up with those schools with NIL if there isn’t some type of cap. Assuming some of his positioning is advocating particularly for Alabama seems reasonable - that he was crying about the Big Ten schools having more NIL resources since they are states with much larger GDP than Alabama would indicate that as well.

There a Russian saying which translates “we thought we had reached the bottom, but then someone knocked from below”.

More can always go wrong. Someone claiming they can fix this easily with an executive order? That’s a warning to start listening for knocking from below.
yeah and I always pay attention to Russian proverbs..

Can you imagine if they end the portal for players who have already transferred once. SU would be up the creek next year. Lousy roster with no incoming freshmen class.

I broke the paywall and the comments aren't bad for SU and ACC. He wants to stay in NCAA because of a sense of obligation to college sports. The threat to "go our own way" is if NCAA doesn't start enforcing its rules. SEC would develop its own enforcement rules and only play OOC games with schools that agree to abide by the SEC rules. He noted that B1G does not.

Thanks. That's consistent with Sankey's prior views. For example, he thinks it would be a mistake for the sport for the SEC and B1G to go it alone. Not sure anyone in the B1G agrees with that. [Maybe KS will at UM.]
