GaTech really stinks this year, so it's not an amazing upset. However, Tulane is now 9-0 with a decent chance to go to 12-0 by the time we face them later this year. Could be a decent challenge out of a team that didn't look like much on our schedule a couple of months ago.

Marshall could be a test as well, 5-1 with a win at Cincinnati.

they haven't played anyone, and GT may be one of the worst teams they played

I get that but 9-0 is still 9-0. How many cupcakes has our 8-0 team had? 5? 6? Gotta respect the record, especially if they are still undefeated when we see them.

Is Ga Tech still even a name that means anything in college hoops? Oh how they have fallen.

Not since their coach unexpectedly passed away.

Wasnt that Wake Forest?
Skip Prosser from Wake Forest. He was a great coach. Made the Xavier program relevant before he went to Wake. They haven't been the same since. I think they made a bad coaching hire after Prosser (Dino Gaudio?).

The abundance of crap in the ACC is troubling. Tech, BC, Wake and Maryland look REAL bad. And the middle tier is an uninspiring bunch.

Guadio was an assistant, and there no time to conduct a search for a permanent replacement following Prosser's death in the late summer.

That said, Gaudio took them to 2 NCAA tourneys in 3 years.

I wouldn't be too worried about it. As long as you have UNC and Duke in the conference it will always be held in high regard by the media pundits.

The Big East has been brutally difficult the last few years. I'm happy to be going to a conference that has a few more middling programs. I actually think we have a chance to dominate the ACC, especially if we get there by next year.

Tulane will be an interesting game ... they are 9-0 but have played 8 home games. They have a big man (7'0") at the 5 and 4/5 of their starters are averaging in double figures. It looks like they play 3 guards altho Timmons (14.2 p/g; 6'5) is listed as a forward. Tarrant is a 3 point specialist ... last game he hit 6/7 3 pointers. Davis isa 6'8 forward averaging 10.9 r/g. Their big man Bruha is averaging 5.2 r/g and only 8.7 p/g. Overall they are at .395 for 3-pointers and only .444 for 2-point fgs. They average 38.2 r/g

The big thing is that all but one of the games was at home (Navy was away) and their performance from the field should have been much better. They have experience. Juniors, Sophs, and at least 1 freshman (Timmons).

They are not cupcakes!!

Nothing new about the ACC. They have always been two teams and a bunch of drek. Every so often another team wafts up to that top level (Wake with Duncan, Maryland in their championship year), but generally, the ACC has always sucked at basketball. Now they will be four teams and a bunch of drek, assuming we don't get dragged down by being in the ACC.

Obviously Duke and UNC have been the flagship programs for a long time but I wouldn't say the ACC has always been like that, I mean they used to be capable of at least having 2 other members be top 25 material. Since it expanded to 12 teams though it really has been garbage after Duke and UNC, the accomplishments by the rest of the league members over 6-7 years have been awful.

I enjoy seeing the high quality competition, I mean I get more excited for Nova, Georgetown, Marquette, West Virginia, etc. than I do for DePaul, Providence, USF. And it seems like we're headed for a lot more DePaul/Providence/USF caliber games.

How did Maryland fall apart so fast? Did they have a lot of exits when Gary Williams retired?

I was watching one of their games and they kept talking about all the walk-ons that were starting, or at least playing a TON of minutes. How do you get THAT bad?

New coach this year who will be recruiting for what will essentially be a new arena (only the original roof was retained). I would expect them to bounce back a bit in 2-3 years.

I'm not too sure about that. They hired the coach from Dayton to take over the program. Nothing against Dayton, but it wasn't exactly the hottest program in the country. I think fans were just frustrated with Hewitt because he was no longer getting top talent from the Northeast.

It wasn't too long ago GaTech was in the national championship game ('04 I think). They have the potential to be a top tier team, but I don't think this new coach is going to get them there. The need a strong recruiter that can pull talent from up and down the East coast. I don't think that currently have that.

I don't expect to dominate Duke and NC. They get first pick on most talent, they have their own turf locked up between them and have more pipelines than anyone else. Their recruiting is not about to slow down. Ours is improving but still not up to theirs in terms of consistency and generally in terms of depth. I expect us to be competitive with them unless JB gets canned, in which case, all bets are off for life in the ACC.

I do expect to play a lot of uninteresting teams. Despite the ACC reputation for softness, I expect that many of these games will be physically rough. The lesser teams are the ones that tend to play rough and dirty as a product of their own desperation.

I am curious if Ga Tech and Maryland etc have their own version of Oily and his deformed son Al? I sure hope so.

Remember, maryland has only lost to Alabama (then ranked), Illinois (should be ranked), and Iona... a team that is very good this year. Watched them play and beat ND today... now there is a team who has a corner on mediocrity ... they looked bad today. Without Abromaitis its going to be a very long year for Mr. Brey.

As far as the future of the ACC ... I think it is very bright indeed. Duke and NC had their usual recruiting year but NC State and Maryland both had darn good recruiting this year as well.NC State in top 10for recruiting.

The ACC went 3-7 over the weekend.

Duke and North Carolina are the top two programs in the ACC now and forever. If SU wanted to be the best or second best basketball or football program in a major conference it should've stayed in the Big East and fought to make the conference "work". The chances of it happening in the ACC are not slim, they're none.

If Syracuse was in the ACC this year, they would be the best in the conference. At worst second best... So saying the chances of that continuing are nil is ignoring the facts at present. We are the highest ranked out of current and future ACC teams right now.
