Class of 2025 G Alex Wilkins (MA) Portal from Furman

I always think of 721 as negative. Especially as I scroll through and see him liking tens and tens of thousands of posts.
I saw him like a post with someone disagreeing with me after he liked 10 of my other posts seemingly in agreement with me, he’s just a bundle of positivity and likes.

I don’t buy that UConn is crazy interested here. Name has been thrown around for a bunch of other guys (including Freeman). I think if we are gonna pull something great out of nowhere, it’s with Wilkins or Wilkinson.
UConn is throwing out a wide net. Hurly wasn’t exactly pleased with how Solo Ball played in the second half of the year. He’s trying to breed competition one would assume.

Mullins is being told in the media to come back by Hurley as well.

No, not really, it is not any better. Syracuse has a ton of rebuilding to do to both its basketball team and its reputation. The ACC was the number 1 League some years ago but the last several it is lucky if it is considered in the top 5.

Syracuse over the past 10 years have been lucky to be considered in the top half of the ACC.

If Syracuse has a good team this year, it will be just the first step in the new world caused by the transfer portal. Last year, we kept 2 players/contributors from the previous year’s team. This year, we will be fortunate to keep 2, not guaranteed. Next year, we may go through the same transition as these years. It is hard to survive yet alone thrive in this environment.

Getting good players and developing them might be a step to develop a culture where the university becomes a recognizable force in college basketball. You don’t snap your fingers and you are back in the upper hierarchy.

Come out of the clouds, Buddy. We have a new coach with a big job ahead of him that includes first building a competitive team and then rebuilding a culture that will fuel a winning atmosphere. Then, having continual success where players/recruits/transfers will want to come to Syracuse to play at a highly competitive level.

I hope that GMAC is up to the task and is successful in re-establishing the desired reputation. We are at the start of the process.
But this is the new reality. Michigan brought in a whole new team this season, and they may have to do it again. Miami, Virginia, St John's started from scratch, and all had good years. We may not like it--I know I don't--but this is how it's going to be unless/until there is some reform of the system.

This is true but I feel like some teams have kept a solid core and built around it. Everyone is all excited over Michigan who is the new shiny thing to do but you can also keep key pieces and win. You just need money to pay them like we did with Sadiq.

If you the number is 10 million or 13 million that’s plenty to get 2-3 major impact players. Or we spread the wealth between lesser players (who hopefully have high motors and some talent).

Why do we like Wilkins, but poo poo Doty? Wilkins played in a bad league too. He also played questionable defense and turned it over a ton.
We think Doty is bad because he was always going to come here. We think Wilkins is good because lots of better teams are interested in him. It’s a “I don’t want to be part of any club that wants me as a member” situation.

I don't like either as a starting piece

So you want a 4-5 mil PG is what you are saying ? And the same at the 5? I get wanting these big names but to do that we have to be coming in with huge NIL numbers so we can overpay to get them. Like 15 plus million kind of numbers… some of the agent numbers are inflated but the math isn’t going to work out unless we go way above the 12-13 threshold.

If you run out two guys in your starting lineup who can play at the next level you are doing well and historically that’s proven true for our program. Right now that could be the euro and Sadiq. It would be nice to have 3 or 4 but solid capable college starters are fine too. I’m not optimist and have high standards being old enough to remember seeing games from the late 80s and on and being on the Hill from 02-06 and living that dream. Guys like Wilkins and Doty are talented enough to start if they come in and work.

I think the pain of the last 10 years has jaded many of us beyond reason at times. We had awful coaching the past 6 years. We have a good staff right now that should be able to build the right roster not just a bunch of popular names.

Nope, just a Syracuse graduate that was on campus from 08-12 and miss when we were ranked and an elite program. The last 10 years have been doom and gloom and downtroddeness.

I'm sure i've contributed far more money to SU than you have if we're pocket watching.
Are we counting tuition?

A lot of these guys are/were going to start somewhere. By the way 3 of the top 5 scorers on UVA came from MM or LM, one was a Euro, and one was a bottom 50 freshman. They also had Tillis play significant minutes off the bench and he came from UC Irvine. The only big minute guy from another power 5 program was Onyenso and he came off the bench.

Is getting a top 25-50 portal player an outrageous expectation given the reasons that were given for hiring Gerry?

At this point 3m is the going rate for a good PG and 4m is the going rate for a good 5. So either we spend that or we will have the same issues as the last 2 years.

If we have 12m I don’t see what the hold up is. Also no announcement of a GM?
Too late in the cycle for a new GM. They would’ve had to hire one before Kline got let go. The hold up is seemingly for everyone. I wouldn’t panic just yet but I agree with you that the outlook is strange rn.

Gerry said in his press conference hiring a gm is one of the non negotiable’s???

I’m relaying what others have said on radio and some articles i read. I tend to agree with them. What’s the point in having one now? And maybe they do and they haven’t announced?
