Class of 2022 G Melvin Council Jr. (NY) Portal to Kansas

You can forget about improving a person's shooting at this point. Sure, they can make some improvement but not much. The one area that they can improve dramatically is at the foul line as that is a fixed shot and can be honed in. Not much can be done otherwise.
Not necessarily true but it's definitely unlikely to go from a huge weakness to a strength. And I feel like Syracuse in particular has shown very little ability to do this kinda thing.

Council, Ballard, Kingz and Kyle in the portal plus Donnie, JJ, Petar, Kiyan, Womack, Sadiq, and Fennell. Pickup one more backup less heralded (non p5) big man with potential and another guard of the same and see what we can do. I’d love to see them look at maybe even filling the roster with a couple d2 kids as a flyer as well given we can go to 15. I’ll just caveat to say give me bigger names if we can land them all day long (as some have been tossed out there) but this would be a much better class that makes sense than what we have done in the portal to date and by a wide margin.

That team still has its flaws but has a lot to work with as well as a capable and experienced starting 5 and some shooters to put on the floor who aren’t just one dimensional.
Who is playing point? Still a huge issue with that roster.

Final four of Kansas, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, and Georgia.

We will see - but this kid is a winner. I would not be surprised if he's a better player and has more of an impact on winning than George.

I think they are both very good players. Happy to have atleast one of them. And the one that is proven at this level against very good competition.

Based on what?

I would.

Dodged a bullet? Kid is a winner.
He is nice, but he would not compliment JJ. JJ is a tough fit for a PG. Because, the PG needs to be fairly decent as a 3 point shooter to go along with PG duties. Both spots need to step it up defensively. That is on the coaches because the athleticism is there. We better pick up another coach that can coach and DEMAND defensive proficiency.

Another high end talent out of Rochester (Kansas ain’t nothing to sneeze at).

Deng (I believe) has Rochester roots.

Jaden Bradley kid from Arizona (via Bama) was born there.

Flower City = underrated for hoops.
Kansas ain’t nothing to sneeze at. But they also signed Cuffe so ther’s that.

Check out his advanced stats, he would have been an awful fit. Especially at the $$$ his camp wanted.

Best of luck to him at Kansas.
His advanced stats are not that much different than George. True Shooting % is about the same (Council 50.5%, George 50.4%). George higher Assist Rate but much higher turnover rate. Council much better steals percentage.

He's a very good player and has won wherever he's been. That stuff matters, IMO. George was on a .500 team last year.

Plus, I don't know what we paid for George, but I highly doubt it was millions more than what Kansas paid him.

Want to know what else matters? That Council shot~40% from the field, and 29% from three.

Not what we needed, and he would have been an ESPECIALLY poor fit with JJ, who also has shooting consistency limitations. No thanks. Glad it worked out the way it did.

George led the ACC in assists. Council played in a lower level conference. We got the better player, who is a better fit. I don't doubt Council's ability to play at a higher level, in a reserve capacity at a place like Kansas. I don't think he would have been as good for us, given the personnel we have, and what we need.

I'm worried about George's outside shooting, too, but I think his shooting mechanics suggest that he can do better.

George also had more blocks than Council this past season, which is really the only stat that matters here.

Council shot 4% points higher than George from the field. His 3-pt. percentage was poor, but he shot nearly 50% on two-point shots, hence his true shooting percentage was over 50%.

I agree that the fit wasn't necessarily the right one - Starling is going to have to show me a lot from an efficiency and defensive standpoint this season. I'm not sure he has what it takes to be a top option on a winning team.

All that being said, I think Council is a very good player and absolutely a starter at the P4 level, and I do think he's as good as George. George's shooting isn't all that much better, and his turnovers are extremely concerning.

I think there is a fair argument that Council is much closer to his ceiling right now where there is a ton of room for continued improvement for George. That to me is also a factor in putting together the best fit. Council also plays more like a combo guard at the point when you watch him vs George who plays like a true PG.

But George is absolutely a true point guard, and Council is more of a combo. We already have an inefficient combo guard in JJ. Adding another would have been a poorly constructed backcourt. We needed someone who could allow JJ to play off the ball more effectively, since we "committed" to bringing him back and building around him. George is well suited to do that.

The fit was key. So was the monetary NIL ask from the Council camp. Adding him wouldn't have made sense. Doesn't mean he can't play, but I think we got a better guy for what WE needed. I'm not familiar with who Kansas has back, or what MC's fit / role will be there -- maybe he's a bench guy. Maybe he plays alongside a legitimate lead guard -- not sure about their personnel coming back next year -- and his "fit" there is better.

But I'm glad we didn't overspend to land a guy who would be a poor fit with the personnel WE have.

George also is younger and has more upside IMO. Council is a good player, but he and JJ in the backcourt would have been a shooting disaster.

Kansas (relative to their normal) struggled this year and one part of that was 3pt shooting at the PG spot. In Self’s system ( go back to his Illinois teams too) having a primary ball handler that is adept and efficient from distance is key so it’s not surprise they’ve been a bit down the past two years to go with. Adding Council is interesting given he is definitely not a guy who is likely to change that for them.
