Ga Tech fires Geoff Collins / hiring Brent Key

It's astonishing that GaTech of today has P5 football. It's a small school and mostly engineering majors. There is a business school. I'm not sure where they can stash football players who really just want to major in football, like other P5 schools have. GaTech has steadily risen in ranking of engineering schools over the last few decades - in some fields they are top 5 in the country (with MIT and Stanford types). It is way higher now than it was 40 years ago. You may find it hard to believe, but Calvin Johnson did the Mechanical Engineering degree there. How many football players in the ACC could do that?

The campus social life of a football player at GaTech is not going to compare to what it is at UGa, or UNC, or Florida State, etc. GaTech may be located in a football hotbed, but it has drawbacks for football recruiting.
Their team seems to be business majors. Football

I mean, is there anything sexier than girls that are majoring in Math or mechanical engineering?
I sometimes miss social cues, so I'm not sure if this was partly in jest, or sincere. (Or both) Apologies.

But there is nothing sexier than a Gal that can pitch in when you have an engine, or electrical circuit board torn apart. Mascara is nice and all... but i'll take the Mechanical engineer...(or Math- my wife pitched in on a terrible plumming issue, last week) if she also wants to discuss the difference between inside and outside zone blocking, vs. Power/Man? I probably owe her a Ferrari. ;-)

Times are changing. As an Engineering manager, I am seeing a huge increase in female engineering grads. It is still a male dominated field but the gap is shrinking. When I was at RIT in the early 90s, you were lucky to have 2 or 3 females in each class.

I’d go Jamey Chadwell if I were Tech. Get the modern option

Sounds like there is going to be a big push for Deion (since Auburn hasn’t made a move) That will drive a lot of glitz and glamor, but think it’s short lived

Not a good fit on either. Maybe Army HC

That’s fair, but I don’t think Tech fans would be excited about that. UGA is debating the relevance of playing Tech every year, so I think they will look to something different than what they had

I think I rather have BOB. Fritz is a good coach, although what happened last season? I would hate to see Tulane not have their HC for the NY6 Bowl. But that is part of the game today.

dude did an excellent job, will be interesting to see how he does as the fulltime guy

He was so so. He went 4-4 winning 3 road games including UNC. But he also lost to a bad UVA team at home and got clobbered by a bad Miami team at home.

He is a GA Tech guy so that is nice. He is from the O'Leary tree. He had no ties to Collins. Which brings up the point why didn't GA Tech hire him as HC in the 1st place?

4-4 in a vacuum is so so but considering they were 1-3 and looking like crap when Collins was fired, I think he did a very job under the circumstances. Maybe they didn't hire him in the first place because he hadn't been a head coach before, and maybe they wanted someone with head coaching experience, no clue

They apparently weren't offering a very attractive package. This has all the earmarks of a 'settle' pick:

From the article:

"The school interviewed 10 to 12 candidates, including Tulane coach Willie Fritz, sources told ESPN.

Tech struggled to lure a big outside name because of the school's reluctance to guarantee large portions of the contract, with the amount of guaranteed money a nonstarter for some candidates.

The school owes Collins more than $11 million, and financial concerns are significant."

Hiring HCs is a crap shoot. I rather hire a qualified alumnus over a guy with 2 years HC experience at Temple. It would be like choosing Marrone over Turner Gill.

Unless they leaked this to take away attention from Fritz, who wants his team to not be distracted Saturday.

Tulane is shaping up as a good expansion candidate for the Big 12 or even the ACC.
