Some quick notes on Game 1 and the 2018 season. Limited on time so apologies for the fragmented thoughts.

- There is a feeling of optimism around game 1 and the season. Have heard very good things from those who see practice / get reports from those at practice.

- Staff feels that we have legitimate ACC talent and depth at OL, DL, QB and CB. OL and DL in particular is night and day from last year. We have struggled against the MAC teams because we have been at best equal to these teams in the trenches. The feeling is that we are stronger on both lines this year, a push at the skill positions, and a plus at QB.

- The feeling is that the team will be much better at the end of the year as the young kids at CB, WR and LB will break through the J-curve around game 6-8. Dino is nervous - knows the good start is imperative as the team could come on strong late and needs the momentum from the fan base. WMU is a tough, tough opponent.

- Have heard great things about Taj Harris. He is he least experienced / refined of the freshman WRs but he goes up and catches everything. He is also really quick and shifty for his body type and makes people miss. Great pick up.

- Love Dungey’s comments on DeVito / Amie. Why? Because DeVito is perhaps the best pure arm talent Syracuse has seen coming out of HS. The ball never hits the ground on 7-on-7s. If Amie can be in a position to compete with TD, Syracuse is in great shape.

- Shy Cullen. I like this kid and have heard very good things. Once of those JR Johnson types that SU always seems to have great success with. Versatile, fast and strong. Will get the opportunity to make some big plays and will fill a pass-rushing role. No real position - just a ball player.

- Trill Williams. People compare him to a young Charles Woodson. I am not supposed to write that on here. But he is good. Really good. Good OL + DL + Corners + QB make for a good team.

- Custis. Hoping he has a Johnnie Morant-type senior year. Talent is there and he has the ability to dominate at times. Huge question mark that will factor into how far this team can go - I am not sure the staff even knows what level of production they will get.

- 4-2-5. Think the new formation will work well. Foster is like having another LB and Cordy gets the chance to play the Polamalu role. I am really high on Cisco. The kid is a naturally instinctive safety and really plays the ball. Think Quentin Harris as a center fielder.

- Dungey. I am expecting a big year. This guy is one of the great competitors that has come through the program. He is a difference maker and the reason I don’t see us winning less than 6 games. Reminds me of a QB-version of Don Darius.

- LBs are a concern, but are matched with a very strong up-the-middle DL. Slayton is an NFL player and McKinley has really come on strong. Gap coverage is a concern - WMU will try to pull as much as possible from the Wake Forest tape - which really showed how to stretch our defense. Big fan of Josh Black and Berry as well. We haven’t had many seasons where we have players like this coming off the bench.

- Overall. Team is faster, bigger and stronger than at any time in the Babers era. The OL is really playing well and Dungey is in his third season as QB and has some developing weapons at WR that are going to see some time as young kids. Talent is there, depth is improving, we are bigger and more athletic. Just need to find a way to win game 1 to set up a bowl season.

Lots of other notes as well that I will post when I have more time.

Wow. Good to see and hear from you.

Really excited about Trill the Thrill.

Also, well done making a comparison that not only broke the stupid "guys can only remind you of guys of their same race" rule, but also crossed sides of the football. That may be the most impressive thing I've ever seen posted here.

J-Curve comment is very interesting.

A blast from the past! Great to see the post.

Appreciate the insight glad to see you back. Game one is big to get off to a good start and get some momentum going. I wish after the Clemson win last year we had played at home. Getting the casual fan back is probably the biggest challenge at this point. Hopefully this is the year we see what the future will bring. Dino is the guy just need to get some positive results to get everyone on board.

Fired. Up. Thank you. Now I am ready. Let’s roll.

J-Curve comment is very interesting.

I never thought of transcending the barriers - but now that I think of it - you are totally right. Perhaps we can compare Dungey to Ryan Tannehill instead!

In all seriousness. Darius was such a great competitor, leader and had the feisty persona that I see in Dungey. Not just as a football player but as a great 400 hurdler in HS (he won the Penn Relays in the early 90s). Dungey is wayyy tougher than people realize - and when your QB is mixing it up with opposing LBs and DBs play after play - it really reasonates on both sides of the ball. These two guys were RESPECTED on both sides of the ball. That is why I don’t see this team missing out on a bowl game.

Excellent post JO, the J-Curve comment is a 100% spot on. Ive mentioned a few times that it seems likely the depth chart for WR and LB will be completely different by say UNC then it will on Friday. As you noted hope we can find away to win Friday and were not looking back on this game wondering if the outcome was different had a few younger guys been ready. This year reminds me a bit of the 2012 team, team ready to breakout with a sr QB and increased depth but a tough opening game just like 2012 might mask what's to come.

Holy crap. Please tell me I'm not dreaming. The season is days away and JO is back. Life is good. Thanks and welcome back!!!

Donovin Darius was a legend. Interceptions all over the place. Just demolished guys across the middle. Can you design a more terrifying safety?

As for Dungey, I think his comp is Jake Plummer for the joyous recklessness.

Between the classic references (jr Johnson, Harris, Darius ...) and actual observations on personnel, I had to wipe off and zip up before responding. Really cool post and if even half of it plays out this season we should have a solid year with a ton to build on for next season. Can’t ask for much more than that so here’s hoping we wake up 1-0 on Saturday morning!

welcome back JO, your insights are very much appreciated! Keep em coming!

so, kid you not, I had a dream about the game last night. All I can remember is that first drive Dungey had a 4 yard run through the middle when he couldn't find an open receiver, then hit Pierce who leaped over defenders twice to get the ball to WMU's 45. Then Jailbreak! by WMU's defensive line. Dungey's pass is batted in the air by a freshman DE and intercepted by the same DE with a spectacular diving grab - the kind your just sure the tip of the ball touched the ground. Then the dream went straight to a topic on this board that SU won with Dungey only missing on 4 passes the whole game.

That's all I got. :D

Great post, great tidbits.
It strikes me that this "overall" is a modest claim. The Babers era is only two years of 4 and 8. Dungey is in his 4th season as QB, having taken over early as a true frosh in 2015. The defense is much stronger than it has been in several seasons. We have seniors in key positions. Going to WMU with a sense of quiet confidence.

Great to have you back, JO. Your presence just got me that much more juiced for Friday night than I already was (and I'm as excited for the opener as I have been for many years).

Really great to have your insights back on the board. You've been missed. Please make this a regular occurrence.
