Emily Leiker:
Week 5 depth chart for the Orange. True freshman Darrell Gill Jr. and Kendall Long filling Isaiah Jones’ spots at WR. Elijah Fuentes-Cundiff now listed as No. 2 DT. Still no Trebor Pena despite him appearing Saturday.

Jones out is a big development. What's the over/under on the total catches we see from Gill and Long on Saturday? 3?

As is often the case... time for the WRs to step up!

It’s crazy we only lose 2 Seniors on offense and 3 on defense. Obviously, losing Shrader is huge, Johnson on defense, and who knows to the portal, but this program has finally begun to build depth at each position.

There is one back up in the defensive backfield that i have no idea how he still gets on the field. He has been beat for more long TD’s since his freshman year. i don’t understand how we don’t have other options back there based on the amount of DB’s we carry?

Was just looking at and thinking the same thing.

He just can't see the field this Saturday. Way too much of a big play liability in a game that is going to have tight margins.

I can't even comprehend how we have this much talent on defense and he is still on the depth chart.

And one of the three on defense could conceivably come back. Caleb redshirted in 2018, missed the 2019 for medical reasons, 2020 was the free year, so this is only his third year playing besides the covid year. I thought he had already been granted the medical redshirt but looks like a pretty clear case.

Agree!

Lockette bumps up to the 2 line at the DE spot but I'm certain he started the Army game. He and Darton were on the inside in a 4 man front.

Gill and Long officially on the 2 line.

Vallari must have started the Army game to.

Nate Wiggins is TBD on playing on Saturday for Clemson, if he is out, that may take a bit of the sting of not having OG or IJ out, but it's still going to be an uphill battle for our WRs. His backup is pretty good, I think (Lukus?).

Dabo with a Babers impersonation ?

Agree. I've said it from his 1st year - no business being on the field. We have far too many good players in our secondary for him to ever see the field in any meaningful duty.

When you look at the program from 10k ft, the quality players brought in to backfill the developed players is what's (along with NIL) finally putting us ahead of the curve it feels. They are establishing a bar for the newcomers to meet so they are able to step up when their time comes. The foundation is solid.

Like the approach with coordinators as well, we'll probably lose Beck in the next season or so. Rocky, I'm hoping is cranky enough to not want to go anywhere and solidify his legacy right here. Either way, looking for and developing the next coordinators through lineage or development/promotion just makes sense. The roster and trajectory of the program is already there.

Sorry for the crazy mid-day random ass post... The way my Chi Bears played this weekend, this is some kind of self remedy therapy for me I guess! It's either this or curse randomly in vintage Navy Sailor tongue to random objects. Not a good look...

I can save this for the off season, but i still need to be proved that the NIL portal is a net positive for us. If you look at the depth chart we have 3 portal transfers that are on the 2 deep and we’ve only seen brief appearances, when it matters, of 1. Despite what they’re currently doing at their respective schools Duce and Carter were proven all-league commodities that have a total of 4 years of starting experience between the 2 of them. That’s not evening counting Geer, who almost certainly would have been a huge help and starter on the DL. If we want to argue that Duce transferring allowed us to keep Jerry then that’s something, but maybe Jerry comes back anyways and our corner depth is that much better.

We’ll see how this season goes but i’m still on the side that this first NIL portal season was an overall loss. With that said we’re 4-0 and i finally feel Babers built depth through recruiting and did what he needed to through the portal. I don’t even want to think about the portal with the potential of a huge season within grasp

I also give you condolences for the Bears. I thought Fields was turning a corner last year. They have to let him run.

Huh?

Three Qb’s, starting TE, starting LG, starting RT before he got hurt, 2nd TB, 4 of 5 starting DBs, most of the 2nd string DBs, co-2nd NT.

And then there are JUCO transfers Bradford, Reed. And More is in the wings.

I’m specifically referencing the time period since the NIL portal has gone into effect , which for the most part was this past offseason. Basically, the period starting when other programs can pay for your top players.

Also, i would count JUCO’s how we always have, as part of your recruiting class, which even so, only Reed has had an impact, but that’s different from what i’m referring to.
