First off we won. We are 3-0. We had a lot of injuries. I think our OC & especially DC had bad games. That happens. I don't expect that to be an issue going forward. However IMO game management mistakes should not happen. I thought that Shafer made 4 mistakes today.

1. The TO at the end. It is inexcusable that our D was disorganized after the sack which forced Shafer to call a TO. Did Bullough pull a McDonald? That sack happened with 37 seconds left. The TO was taken with 15 seconds left. Why in the hell could we not get a call to our players in 22 seconds of time?

2. The TO at the end of the 1st half. There was way too much time left to call a TO there. It left 3:10 on the clock with CMU punting from their own endzone. We still had 2 TOs left as well. That is waaaay too much time. What if Brisly returns the punt for a TD? Do you want CMU to have 2:45 left or 2:15 left? If the O has a drive that results in points do you want CMU to have more time or less time to score before the end of the half? We should have had the ball at the 40 with 2:30 left on the clock and 3 TOs. Plenty of time. We scored with 1:11 left when it should have been 0:41 left. That nearly came back to bite us. Thankfully we got a big sack to stop them.

3. The delay of game on 4th & 1. I do not blame Shafer for punting at all. However he should have called a TO with 1 second on the play clock. Then sent out the offense to try and draw CMU offside. If it doesn't work, no big deal take the delay of game. Even a false start doesn't hurt you as you want the 5 yards for Dixon. There was zero risk to trying this. There was a huge potential reward.

4. The kickoff from the 50 yard line. You have a chance to pin CMU back there. Pop the kickoff up inside the 20. Or squib it. Why concede the 25? Then to make matters worse CMU was offsides. So instead of kicking it from the CMU 45, we declined the penalty! You can even trick them by kicking a 10 yard dribbler and recovering it. The reward your ball at the CMU 35. The risk CMU starts at the 35. If you are willing to let them start at the 25, why not the 35? Is 10 yards that big a deal? Isn't it worth the risk of getting the ball back?

Good points but I disagree on #4

I have seen us kick it off from our 35 and it made the other team call a fair catch at their 35. That is 30 yards. Doing the same from the 50 means CMU calls a fair catch at their 20. Then after the offsides that becomes the 15 yard line. That is a 10 yard difference than where they started.

I get the logic, but I've seen a ton of horrible special teams play where a team runs it back way too far leading to an easy score. I'm in the camp of blasting it through the end zone every single time.
