Gattis

I don’t know if he was mad because he didn’t see the open receiver or didn’t make the right read or what.

They both discussed it after, basically, he didn't do something he'd been previously instructed on. Gattis admitted he was emotional and Rickie didn't seem to have an issue with it and said he's going to try to do better. To his credit, when prompted Rickie also didn't say what the thing he was supposed to do was, citing that they'll likely use the same play again.

I think we can guess approximately what the thing was.

My coaches acted like morons to me when I was a kid when they should’ve known better and that is why this is ok.

It’s a take I suppose
you're right, these are kids getting paid 6 figures and coaches with potential 7 figure contracts on the line. They should be soft spoken at all times and not try and fire up the team's leader. soooooooft.

Ah yes, the only two options.

For what it’s worth I’d think it was low class if I watched similar behavior in any of the games I watched today.

I don’t think Gattis yells over something that Collins just messed up for the first time. I think it was boiled over frustration for repeated mistakes.

I also think Collins was our leading rusher and has not earned the right to have us not take advantage of that. We need to run him more to give us more offensive options. He had a nice TD pass. I give him 20 minutes against Pitt to see what he can do.

Ok and? They look like jackasses
You're right you just changed my mind. You know what makes us look like jackasses? Getting throttled on the football field. No recruit is changing their mind because Josh Gattis got on a QBs butt for making the same mistakes over and over.

We have co coordinators on offense and defense. Gattis probably doesn’t come here without knowing he is next in line when Nixon leaves whether that is this year or next
Did he have other choices? He needs to earn it. I still think we can’t rule out that Johnson will be the lead offensive coordinator.

He had nowhere to go because he keeps getting fired.

He doesn’t even have a headset. Seems like a big jump to OC unless he would just use what he wants and not be a continuation (big mistake IMO).

Also will Nixon get a job after 3-9?

exactly, by running sprints after the game!
Apparently you never listened to HCFB explanation of that and I did not say I would do that as a tactic. I am talking about a specific action taken by an assistant coach during the last game. If you think that was ok, you are entitled to your viewpoint .

Why do people equate “getting paid” with getting “yelled at”? I’m sure there are people on here who have been paid well who wouldn’t have liked or wouldn’t have responded positively to being abused by their bosses for making a mistake. Why is it okay in the context of a football player? Because it’s “old school”? That’s silly. Old school doesn’t equal good. In fact, in most aspects of life is equals outdated and less effective than newer and better methods.

Here’s the deal, Ricky isn’t very good. People with analytical thought knew that from the start. Too bad we lost Angeli. I’m not sure Carney is going to be much better, at least not one month into his freshman season. But, in the meantime, there’s no evidence abusing kids will make them better.

It’s on Fran for not having a competent backup, although I give him a lot of credit for bringing Angeli in. it’s not Fran’s fault he got hurt.

Carney came here in January.

I am a bit worried about our QB recruiting. We needed to get a HS QB who could play this year knowing we only had Williams coming back (unless they thought Williams was good enough to play some this year). So did they fail on everyone they tried for? Did they think Carney was that guy and got it wrong? Because if Carney is that guy then he should be playing.

The current HS recruiting looks to be the same too. Why the last two years are we involved with guys outside the Top 75? That isn't good enough. Even if you are getting QB1 in the portal, the backup is likely to be needed at some point.

Which might be why they are all in on Collins. They know that we have no QB2 for 2026 and hope that they can fix him enough that he can sufficiently backup Angeli.

I agree with you. I was going to make the same comment about QB recruiting in my post but stopped short because I’m wondering if the staff’s strategy re QB recruiting is 100% portal?

It’s possible they are thinking portal every year because it’s hard to hold onto any QB worth playing long enough to actually play them. None of them want to sit long enough to backup the starter and develop in practice, so why not just get a new one from the portal every year or two??

Not saying that’s wise. We’ve scored twice with McCord and Angeli, but the portal also brings guys like Collins too. It’s hard to rely on the portal, so, as you say, it would really be nice to recruit solid HS QBs and grow them with the system.

Would love it if Carney is a star, but it’s okay to be curiously concerned when Texas, Ta&m, Texas Tech, SMU, and TCU, etc, etc all “overlooked” Carney. We’ll see. One thing is obvious, Carney is not a college ready elite 4-star ready to step in to play automatically like some around the country. If he was, he’d be playing.

In hindsight, big difference is that those two were set up to start for playoff teams and were likely to get leapfrogged. Rickie was the backup on a mid-pack SEC team.

I dunno. I think LSU could've given him a bag if they wanted him to stay as a backup.

We can draw no conclusions about Carney yet based on the circumstantial evidence you are providing. Just look at Pitt’s 18 year old freshman 3 star QB with just one P4 offer who just went 30 of 41 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns.

Having the QB1 strategy being portal is fine. But you need a sound strategy for QB2. Especially since most of the time, QB2 will have to play at some point (outside of mop up).

Here was our QB depth this time last year:

Johnson RS-JR
Grusser FR
Miller FR
Williams FR

We were extremely lucky that we didn't have to go to QB2 last year. But knowing the above we needed to recruit a portal QB to come in and compete for QB1 (Collins), a HS kid to come in an compete for QB1 (failed), a HS kid to come in and compete for QB2 and maybe compete for QB1 in a few years (Carney).

If Collins keeps playing this way and neither Williams nor Carney start getting PT, that will mean that both are misses.

Looking ahead to next year we seem to have a big issue as well. You know that the loser of Angeli/Collins QB1 battle this year, is likely to leave next year. Which means we have a big whole at QB2 again. You aren't getting a decent portal QB to come here and sit two years.

So we really should be recruiting a HS kid to come in an compete for PT at QB1 (meaning maybe a drive or two each game) but at worst be QB2 (failed), and a HS kid to come in and compete for QB2 and maybe compete for QB1 in a few years (hopefully we hit this).
