I get that "shooters are gonna shoot", but some of those helped take us out of the game at times.

Good effort overall, seeing as how we were badly outmuscled inside.

When Griffin goes to the rim or gets out on the break, he's better than some of his twisting, forced threes.

With Joe, we don't need the HS 35 foot shot as you come up the floor when we're down one in the late second half. Jim should have taken him out after that. You have to have some sense of game time and situation if you want to win close games.
This was here to win, but a loose rein on offense and inexperience in our defense for many of the new guys let Rutgers pull away at the end.

Anybody still think this wasn't an important game? Rutgers is not THAT good. This was like losing to Penn State, last year. Sucks to have let this one get away.

Rutgers is a legit top 25 team. We just aren't anywhere near as bad as last year and thus they were not that impressive by comparison. Harper can ball as can Young. Their centers are big space eaters and rebound well. They are a defensive team first and foremost. Both teams got gassed and the defense fell off quite a bit as a result.

They were missing 2 guys, too, including their best player. So that's kind of a wash to me.
Sure, with Sidibe we would have been better, but we need at least one guy who goes 240 in the post, not just 4 guys who all weigh 215. Roster construction.

Mcconnell is a medical redshirt/opt out... So he isn't even in play this year for them. It's two to 1 in terms of current roster.

Blah, blah, blah.

It's still Freaking Rutgers we lost to. What's that, first time in 13 games?, something like that?
With nobody in the RAC, and let's be honest, NOT an elite team, just a hardworking one.
Not a lot of special players on that team.

Just a better constructed roster, with all the different kinds of players you need for different opponents - not just the "one kind of player" that meets your ideal.

When was the last time we had a bulky center?
Arinze and Rick?
Fab Melo his sophomore year?

You know what? Those were our better teams. Where are one or two of those guys on this roster?
We recruited a couple 6-9 240 guys in the last few years, but never land them. We never seem serious about it. Some of them can hit a three with better consistency than JBA has shown so far.

Rutgers is a "meh" team. Really didn't impress me at all.

We left Danya Abrams Jr. open over and over and he made us pay. That, along with our idiotic shot selection and poor rebounding, cost us the game.

Danya Abrams, Jr. is a funny line. Well played!

Explanation discussed on threads here for lanky vs bulky centers is that we recruit lanky centers b/c they have to be very mobile to play the zone.
Suppose like anything that's debatable. Fab was a big guy and good on D.

So besides an angry rant what are you really getting at?

I kept picturing Philip Seymour Hoffman in what about Polly screaming “making it rain!”

We already signed Frank. He’ll be a stud. Some of these guys keep coming with these 2018 complaints.

Our freshman class is very good, and we bring in an elite recruit next year. We’re on our way back.

This year’s team will be solid too.

And likely all returning...

They’re a clone of Pitt. Tough D not much else.

Joe needs to stop playing like he is in shoot around on offense. He needs to be quick when using screens, step into his 3s and make sure he sets his feet quicker and gets lift on his shot. He is too slow in every phase especially in properly using a screen. As a shorter guard his lifeblood is a big man getting him a nice screen. I'm sure Sid being out plays some role but overall a lot of it is Joe.

When handling it he needs to make a quick move hit a pass and then hustle to get it back when he is being pressed... Stop diddling around with the ball or push it up the court instead and kick it. He plays like he is a different player possession to possession sometimes. It's odd considering Gerry is the closest player who can relate to the challenges Joe has to overcome and Gerry consistently stuck to playing the game his way.

On defense he doesn't need to gamble but he does need to occasionally get up on shooters almost like he is matching up with them to keep them honest. He is not tall enough to put his hands up and just shuffle his feet.

Yeah, where Joe's shooting such a low percentage, the mindset should be that he only puts up shots (unless the clock's winding down) when he can be perfectly squared up. Get in rhythm taking and making good shots, and then spice it up with some more creative angles.

Also I know this isn't a Marek thread but Sid can't get back fast enough for his benefit too. It's clear he came in focused to be a 4/high post guy not a 5 this year. In game 1 it was wide open so he had the spacing and positioning to play his game. Really since you can just see that while playing as best he can, he hasn't been that good. He makes for a great point forward as a 4. The team as a whole plays better even with Ajak in there vs Marek. He has quietly struggled since game 1 compared to the impact he can have in the right position.

God he was talented

No doubt. So tragic, and certainly gone too soon. :(

I recently saw a movie he was in (I think on Starz) that I had never seen or even had heard of for that matter. It was called, 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.' It was somewhat dark, but I found it rather compelling. There was some serious irony in the role he played in the movie correlating to his own personal life and the demons he battled and struggled with for years, ultimately taking his life. There was a solid cast, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney and Marisa Tomei, who was smoking HOT in it.

It’s a really good movie

At what point do you have to suggest that 'coaching' is a culprit in consistently poor shot selection?

The thing is... both Joe and Griff can make some of those horribly, ugly, stupid shots. But, don't we have to be working toward maximizing efficiency? Seems, too often, like we're just content to be stupid, because we're too ineffective or lazy to get decent shots. I blame Steph Curry. And Boeheim.

So besides an angry rant what are you really getting at?

People thought this was going to be easy. It wasn't. We're not as good as we need to be.
We look like a bubble team again, if we can't beat Rutgetrs.

You'd think that at least one of our four coaches would insist on this.
