Gene Bartow passes away

He was 52-9 in two seasons at UCLA succeeding Wooden and was basically fired for not winning enough. Always exhibited a lot of class.

Always seemed like a real gentleman.

Bartow
have fond memories of bartow from the one final four i covered as a sportswriter -- 1973, when his memphis state team (that's what they were called then) lost to ucla in the championship game, as bill walton hit 21 of 22 against bartow's stud, larry kenon, et al. larry finch, who went on to coach memphis, played guard for that team.

of course, good chance providence would've been in that championship game if marvin barnes hadn't hurt his knee in the semi against memphis state. woulda liked to have seen bad news, ernie d and kevin stacom go up against ucla.
