Gerry McNamara needs to be the next coach

A lot of people are in Gerry's corner. Two big questions. 1) How many of them are letting their wallets do their talking?
2) Is the new administration allowing Adam Weitsman back into the fold? He's been busy posting old memories. Does that mean anything.

2a] Is weistman just piling on, captializing on an opportunity to stick it to the Lally's, who he's been fueding with for several years? Or is he actually going to donate some $$$ this time, instead of just talking about doing so?

This is the part I don’t get either. If you’re not getting a Pitino, or getting a Tony Bennett to come out of retirement, just about everyone is a crapshoot. A few years ago everybody wanted Oats. That was a pipe dream. Many did not understand the change in the basketball landscape due to NIL. There are maybe 10 coaches that I believe strongly could coach anywhere. Oats may or may not be one of them.

I say that because many of the guys thriving in the SEC have SEC money. How good would they be somewhere else? Hard to say because they don’t move by their own choice. Hard to poach them. Then if you get even a proven guy like Buzz Williams, you could see how he crashed and burned at Maryland without A&M resources.

Cooley was “proven” and was supposed to resurrect Georgetown, it was a slam dunk. Everyone said so. But that didn’t happen. Again, very few guys are slam dunk hires.

Seton Hall made a great hire with Shaheen Holloway. If that guy wasn’t a Seton hall alum, he would be in demand, and would be much easier to poach than he is. That’s the kind of guy I want coaching my team and representing my university.

Give me McNamara over Red, and give me Fran Brown over Dino. Give me guys with passion over guys who appeared to be “mailing it in”, who always seemed way too comfortable with losing. I think Gerry is a winner and I would rather take a chance on him then take a chance on anybody else that might be in the running for our head coach. Because whoever we hire, we’re taking a chance on.

If Gerry wasn’t connected to Syracuse, everybody watching that Duke game would say “that’s a guy we need to hire”. He took a four win team to a tournament team, (almost beating Duke as a 16 seed, playing only five players) in just two years.

It is nice to ginally see some sanity. In the NIL world Cuse is not a big boy. We should play to our strengths and about the only one left is the possibility of having a respected stable coach. Only G-Mac offers that possibility. For anyone else, we are a stepping stone. JB was paid below market and aside from basketball he was a pillar of the community. We need a competent coach who also bleeds orange.

In the ACC, as a snowbound school, we are at a recruiting disadvantage. No coach is going to sprinkle fairy dust and change that. Look at football: FB is the best we could get and we gave up 77 points to a team that did not even make the playoffs. Our expectations need to face reality.

For the past 5 years I have had little to no interest in March Madness.
My passion for the game had been waning until Thursday Afternoon.
Only BECAUSE it was GMac's team did I watch the game.
During the game, I realized I felt proud for GMac as he proved the naysayers wrong and that made me feel hopeful, excited and optimistic for the future of Syracuse Basketball.
I haven't posted in years, (I read the forum daily) but tonight as an alumnus of our beloved university I feel compelled to give my 2 cents.
GMac has shown why he should be our next Head Basketball Coach.
Amen brother, stick around, good times are a-coming!!

This is as far from true as it is possible to be. There is absolutely, positively no way we’d be clamoring for a guy who finished 3rd in his second year at a school in one of the worst conferences in basketball, then won the tournament and gave Duke a tough game in the NCAAs. None.

The only reason there’s so much interest is because he’s a “Syracuse guy”. A few people are willing to admit that - the vast majority are far more interested in gaslighting like you did here.

My feeling is if Gmac comes and kills it we will fill the dome and our average attendance would increase bye 7,000 or so at 15 home games and going low would be 30 dollar tickets could be a additional 3.1 mill per year more.

A spike of 7000 per game gets us back to 13-14 attendance - probably takes more than one good season (I’d guess about 3 with 2 possible) - but it’s possible. “Kills it” probably needs to be top ten seasons ideally with deep tourney runs to see that bump.

They will be bussing in 2k people from Scranton right from the jump 🤣

Of all the insane rationalizations for hiring Gerry, the idea loads of busses will be coming from Scranton for every game is possibly the most bizarre. People don’t pay to see coaches, expecting that people will come to see him coach just because he played here is not reasonable. A couple weekend games might get busloads of fans from Scranton - but it’s not going to make a measurable impact on average game attendance.

It was a joke...that is why I used the laughing emoji. As a native son of Syracuse I assumed we all grew up well versed in sarcasm

Not sure why the hostility. Who ever your guy is is just an opinion like my opinion.

First about our “interest”. 1/2 dozen friends who are not Cuse fans texted me the other day. I have not talked about Gerry to them in years, if at all. Yet they were following the game (everybody wants to see Duke lose) and knew he was a Cuse guy and were impressed. I’m sure administrations all over the country took note and if Cuse does not hire him, that game and his 2 year record will get him a better job.

Also, they went from 4 wins to 23 wins, winning the championship in 2 years. Your downplaying his regular season “third place finish” despite this accomplishment, is the definition of gaslighting.

2 things are not debatable. He took lesser athletes and talent and taught them help defense. Something we had no clue about. The non stop layup drill teams had vs. us lost us several winnable games. Also they did not win the MAAC regular season because they did not shoot like yesterday all year, but clearly they were able to get open looks at the line that we struggled to get vs most good teams.

Favoring a guy who went from 4 wins to 23 in 2 years, and displaying excellent offensive and defensive principles, and being a Cuse guy, is a pretty good combo in my book. But there are no guarantees.

There is no way that you would support a Siena coach getting the job after two years with an identical record if he was named John Smith. None. At all. Yet none of his supporters are capable of admitting that. Weird.

Not really sure why it’s so friggin’ hard for GMac supporters to own that this is 100% about his Syracuse ties at not in any way, shape, or form about his coaching record. You almost managed to squeeze out something that vaguely resembled an honesty that few Gerry supporters even get close to at the end. All it takes now is admitting his meager record with a tiny bit of success is just enough for Syracuse fans to hang their hat on as a supposed reason - but this is primary and almost entirely about wanting a “Syracuse guy”.

Oh, I knew you were joking. A surprisingly large number of Syracuse fans on here are not when they say that though.

This stuff is insufferable.

SU isn't an NBA gig, where a coach spends half the time in a rental, have the season on the road at a Ritz Carlton, then goes to his summer place in AZ / TX / FL the second the season is over.

The SU gig is a 24 /7 365 gig now of fundraising, marketing, etc etc...so a guy that knows what he's getting into and wants to be here it part of it and not on the next train outta town. Takes a certain type.
