How much do you think that single statement damaged the football program?
Personally I have heard people say they dropped their season tickets, one example my next door neighbor. He has never gone back. I wonder how many other people fall in that category?
from 2003
(Caller): The fans are always being criticized in Syracuse, whereas the lacrosse and basketball teams lead the nation in attendance consistently. I was wondering if you could share with us why this is not the same in football? Also, do you regret any of the comments regarding saying "get a life" to the fans or any of that stuff. Here it is a couple of years later and fans still talk about that.
I don't think he answered the question:
KS: It is one thing to draw 8-10,000 for five lacrosse games, and we draw spectacularly for basketball, but let's face it, it was going down each year until this year. It is another thing to draw 49,300 in football. I don't think there is anything wrong with the fans. What makes it difficult is that we will not be able to draw 70,000 for Notre Dame because we only seat 49,000. Let's say that we did draw 60-65,000 and that we drew for some of our other premier games 55-60,000, you would have a much more financially viable situation. Those are not in the cards. It is almost as if you have to draw to capacity every game and there are probably only a dozen or so other schools in the country that do that.
As for the "get a life," I have a lot of regrets over the years. I thought if you read the whole article you would see that there were a lot of other things said and that was the lead.
