How much do you think that single statement damaged the football program?

Personally I have heard people say they dropped their season tickets, one example my next door neighbor. He has never gone back. I wonder how many other people fall in that category?

from 2003

(Caller): The fans are always being criticized in Syracuse, whereas the lacrosse and basketball teams lead the nation in attendance consistently. I was wondering if you could share with us why this is not the same in football? Also, do you regret any of the comments regarding saying "get a life" to the fans or any of that stuff. Here it is a couple of years later and fans still talk about that.

I don't think he answered the question:

KS: It is one thing to draw 8-10,000 for five lacrosse games, and we draw spectacularly for basketball, but let's face it, it was going down each year until this year. It is another thing to draw 49,300 in football. I don't think there is anything wrong with the fans. What makes it difficult is that we will not be able to draw 70,000 for Notre Dame because we only seat 49,000. Let's say that we did draw 60-65,000 and that we drew for some of our other premier games 55-60,000, you would have a much more financially viable situation. Those are not in the cards. It is almost as if you have to draw to capacity every game and there are probably only a dozen or so other schools in the country that do that.

As for the "get a life," I have a lot of regrets over the years. I thought if you read the whole article you would see that there were a lot of other things said and that was the lead.

Could someone please summarize the infamous "get a life" quote for those of that didn't follow the team that closely back then?

I read about it all the time here, but I do not know the context of the quote.

This is just about my exact view from my hospital room.

The flag is exactly that distance from beautiful Crouse College as in my view..

As I say to people it's time to get a life from the get a life comment. Move the on. Either enjoy Syracuse sports for what they are or move on. Nobody cares anymore and people who still want to hang their hat on that comment for their reason for leaving are living in the past and still talking about the days when Chrysler and Carrier were major players! Typical Syracuse nonsense

Sorry But Anybody Who Dropped Their Tickets Over A Comment Made By The Chancellor Is An Idiot.

He Or She Was Looking For An Excuse To Stop Coming.

I Hope They Never Come Back.

Go Watch The Crunch.

There Is No Need To Capitalize Every Word In A Sentence.

Telling your customer base they need to get a life is a pretty crazy thing to say. The next time a client walks into my office and wants to see their financial statements I should tell them to get a life and see how it goes.

But it was 15 years and a completely different administration ago.

Exactly, nobody is saying the statement was a wise one, but it's in the past. It's like blaming Shafer for Grob's tenure

Agree with PA.

But, as Shaw said, it helps to take the line within the context in which it was said.

If not a client but, say, I were to tell you that a colleague of yours should be fired, I hope and expect that you'd tell me to get a life.

It impacted my opinion of Ken Shaw. Nothing else.

OE, you've really been going down the rabbit hole recently.

Onward and upward

Sorry about the Caps.

That's my cell phone - can't do anything about it.

Obviously your situation is hardly comparable - do some of your clients regularly tell you after a successful performance - years - that your staff should be fired???

What Shaw said was meaningless to a true SU Football fan.

The comment sucked and he was an idiot for saying it. Numbers don't lie, so the season ticket numbers after he made that comment should tell the story plainly enough.

Time marches on though. Wonder if Gross still travels with USC luggage?

"Look at your own personal life," Shaw said. "You go to work. Some days, you really achieve at a level you're capable. Some days, it's like having a career day and some days you might as well have stayed at home. All of a sudden, you look at the football team and they're never supposed to have one of those days? Let's join the human race and get a life."
Didn't really bother me.

It never bothered me either...I understood what he was saying. Frankly alot of whiny babies...the folks mostly crying about it used it as an excuse to jump off the 90's bandwagon.

Ok...what were they that year and what were they the year after?

I suspect that the won-loss record had far more impact.

CNY fans are front runners - unfortunate but true.

So if a client had a problem with my service or one of my employees I should tell them to get a life? Yeah that would go over real well.

First, I don't think you answered the question.

Suppose your client had no problem with your services - suppose that you and your employees performed exceedingly well for the client.

And suppose that for no apparent or logical reason, the client constantly called you and berated you while insisting that you fire an employee who had performed well, was honest and worked very hard.

I don't doubt that you wouldn't say "get a life" - I wouldn't either - but I do think that at some point you would defend the employee and your company??

I think that the Shaw comment was made in that context - that the nature and the extent of the complaining was not fair.

His words were probably not well thought out, but the essence of his comment was valid in my opinion - that the criticism was over the top.

Anybody who gave up tickets because of the comment is - sorry - an idiot.

I will repeat - an idiot.

I also think there was a smug comment by Jake thrown in there too, something about a one horse town that affected the reaction to Shaw's comment.

In the client's estimation, that employee was not performing as well as he had, and the client therefore wanted to "hire" someone else. That is the client's determination to make.

There were other things contributing to the slide, but the "client" was not entirely off-base and "illogical" here.

Obviously, we disagree.
