Get Hodgson, Get Melo on Board

They need more NIL and a head coach that can communicate how to play defense.

Two straight horrific defenses and offenses devoid of competent three-point shooting.

I love Red but if the administration grits their teeth and keeps him, the Dome will be empty from Game 1.

If boosters and corporations and fans/supporters see a poorly coached team with results and performance trending negatively… are they likely to Increase their funding or decrease it?

Increase, because they think it’s entirely their responsibility or potential to make up a gap?
Decrease, because they weren’t happy with the choices that were made with the previous budgeting, and might not believe the decision makers should be trusted with even more money?

Is this a circumstance of ‘pouring perfectly good money down the toilet,’ or one of ‘we gotta do more so Red can do more?’

I really hope we’re not counting on Carmelo and Kiyan to buy us two years of .600 ball because even with more talent we’d still have no scheme to deploy it. Those (others) with the funds to commit probably have eyes, too. I’m not sure what they could be seeing that would encourage them to keep pushing money at a problem.

Sometimes, the destructive solution (tearing it down and rebuilding) is the constructive solution.

I am a former wrestler and that is a hot button issue for me...

Imagine having a great legacy coach in Mills who was essentially a pinnacle wrestler and a Magic Johnson or Walter Payton of the sport per se... and Jake calls you into his office that stinks like an ashtray and tells you you're cut loose and the program is axed. Title IX... tough luck... and such...

I mean, EVERY modified and highschool wrestling team nationwide worth spit is coached on the the Mills' Half Nelson series to this day.

The guy was and IS literally a legend... and Jake just kicked him to the curb like yesterday's trash.

OK wrestling rant over.

P.S. Rutgers is really good at wrestling now.
Yeah man I hear ya. I wasn't good enough for D1 wrestling so I came to wrestle D3 in Iowa after JUCO. But my brother was going to be on scholly at Cuse to wrestle when the program was dropped, and no one told him or my family anything. He found out late summer when it was too late and ended up at Brockport. Which ended up great and he loved his experience.

I’m going to blow some people’s minds here: raising NIL funds is PART OF HIS JOB. There is enough money in the Syracuse community and alumni base to put us in the upper tier of the ACC. If he can’t find the money there, he needs to look elsewhere. Part of being a coach in 2025 means you have to be able to sell your vision and be extremely aggressive in chasing dollars, or you won’t last long.

There are no excuses for what has happened this season.

Bingo

If they are planning to run it back next year, Waters article is the PR talking points as to why.

That spin is one thing but dwindling 5-8K turnstyle attendance #'s at homegames and a significant drop season tix renewals (if that happens) can't be spun.
Waters's PR spin also mentioned that Red already proved he can coach, and crowed about the "20" wins from last year.

WHAT?!?!?!

He has proven nothing of the sort. The disjointed, pickup basketball played last year only showed a continuation of the JB approach, carried by more talented players than this year. The complete lack of ability to run an offense or improve defensively in 50 games is a drastic indictment on his so called in-game coaching and philosophy. The portal and roster management have also proven to be disastrous.

I know he's not going to come out and discuss Red like many on here have, but at least have some courage to be critical!

I don't blame Waters.

The sports journo beat is tough... you write something critical and then you aren't fed information anymore from the program or AD department.

Axe did that and got shunned and booted from ESPN.

We all just need to be aware that on matters like this, the take will be slanted.

Cant be too critical and lose that access to practice and the program

Day2 has established a long history of being wrong on just about every topic. He’s either intentionally trolling or is one of those outlier individuals that’s just wrong about everything.

Something tells me if this was 2010 in an NIL world we would have more money in NIL than what we know what to do with. We wouldn’t be hoping to catch up to the market, we would be essentially setting the market along with the other blue bloods. Red started this job already dealing with headwinds. The program was losing momentum over the previous decade in a new conference and the Orange family that JB built is not one big happy family. Right now we are facing adversity as a program. This is a time when effective communication is super important from the Coach to inspire confidence in the team, the fan base, and the media. It’s just not happening right now. And now the talk is about how we don’t have enough NIL, how can I watch us play and listen to press conferences and think yeah more money is the solution right now. We need a leader who can effectively communicate their vision, unite the Orange family that JB built, and is a type A personality! It hasn’t been since the Boeheim Brothers year, even though unsuccessful that we actually looked like we enjoyed every second of playing the game of basketball. Like acknowledge the magnitude of the current situation, a graduating class is 99% likely to leave not having seen a tournament with Cuse in it. Let alone the years prior, those teams were not safely in the field either.

Great take

Yep. To be fair to Mike, most (not all) programs keep the local media under their thumb in a similar fashion, but it's especially the case when the college program is the de facto local pro team and the media game is what it is.

I think the fact that most small-to-midsized cities' media is dying has a lot to do with it. People are trying to institute paywalls, but they are years too late, and never priced the product appropriately. Media is dead now, even the big ones, because no one tells the truth, no one is honest. Everything is spin. Everything is BS. Truth and facts have lost. Access is everything, and so the questions are shallow and fawning, or else you don't get access anymore, and then no one reads your paper or watches your show. Content is indeed king, as they predicted back in the early 90s.

Could someone closer to the issue help me understand why Syracuse does not have a deep NIL pool? I bet it’s a smaller private school. Are alums and boosters less inclined to invest dollars in Syracuse sports? Are there no local successful businessmen and entrepreneurs that have deep pockets and loyalty to the program?

I’m in Dallas and the best comparable is SMU. They seem to have no problem raising NIL, even among a market that’s filled with other programs successfully raising NIL. Why is this such an issue in Syracuse?

SMU and North Dallas is another world.

Re Hodgson – I haven’t really watched a game he coached yet so I wanted to do that since I saw they played today. You can’t really form a great opinion on style from what you read it is better to see it.

If I had to sum up his style in one word it would be MODERN.

Offense – They play fast and downhill. 4 out offense. High pick-n’ roll almost every time down. Very few ISO. They shoot a ton of 3s. Sometimes bad 3s sometimes good 3s but they launch a ton of them. It is either a 3 or a shot in the paint, very little to nothing in the mid-range.

Defense – Hard to tell they are playing someone terrible. They play physical man, but I can see how it wouldn’t be a strong suit. His system is set up for the offense to win games. They try to cause turnovers and run. They played a little 1-3-1 full-court press-type defense. Mixed it up a little but hard to tell much.

Coaching – I saw assistants drawing up plays in the huddle on offense which was nice to see. He seems really intense and into the game on the sidelines. Not afraid to have a conversation with a player while coming to the bench. I saw the ball stick one time and they ended up getting to the line as the shot clock expired but he was laying into his PG because the offense was stalled.

They are up 20 playing a bad team so I am probably not watching the second half.

How do you figure $20M+?
I've read online that his contract is $3M a year and ends after the 2026 season - 1 more year.

I have also read that he is paid closer to $2M/year, but his deal runs through 2028, which would be a 5 year contract for a rookie head coach.

Either way, what we might owe Autry would not seem to come close to your number.

Yes, you have to pay for a new coach anyway.
20 m isn't for Red.

We don't have a ton of NIL and could definitely use more.

That said, we have spent what we have VERY unwisely, and that is the biggest issue (along with the coaching issues)

We have enough NIL to field a competitive squad at least, if the targeting and roster construction was better (and coaching, of course.)

Obviously, Kline should help with better transfer targeting and roster construction going forward at least... and it sounds like he's trying to boost the coffers.
They pissed it away on the wrong player. Lampkin just isn't what Red needed if in fact he wants to play at a fast tempo.

SMU and North Dallas is another world.
Not all SMU alums live in the Park Cities nor or all residents of the Park Cities SMU supporters, even though it does help to be in an ultra rich location.

Is one of the main issues the relatively lower economic level of the greater Syracuse area?

But I always wonder why Alabama and LSU can create so much NIL funding given their lower economic level.

For Syracuse, is it lack of desire or lack of capability?
