I thought the O play calling was a lot better. The triple option, Tucker and Adams both in the backfield, more motion, running off tackle.

Obviously it would be better to have a great passing attack as well but I thought the run calls were good and mixed it up for most of the game. And it was great to see the O line have a great game

He needs to trust Shrader more as the season goes on. Hopefully they both get more comfortable and improve together.
Yes definitely would be nice to see more passes, maybe we’ll see that with whoever is back there. But as far as run plays I thought Gilbert mixed it up more. Not just dives up the middle. Running plays east west a little also tires out the D more it seems as well

1st half was fine… the problem is the he didn’t build on the first half, he just repeated the first half after liberty adjusted. Play action would have been there all day if he wanted it. Also, not sure if he Gilbert or Babers knows this but you are allowed to throw between the hashes and you are allowed to throw if between the line of scrimmage and 40 yards down the field.

When he tried that whatever it was backwards pass to Taj, I realized how limited he felt at that point of the game.

The passing game with Shrader needs A LOT of work, and the games are only going to get harder. Especially on the road.

1, 4, 8, 19, 13

The total yards for our last 5 drives

I am pumped for the win but petrified for our future games

I'm also really tired of the penalties. It's a mark of an undisciplined team, and it's a massive problem at this point, 1/3 of the way through the season. Got to clean this up, can't go backwards with an offence that doesn't move the ball easily.

Huh?
We only had a handful of penalties in this game.

A VAST improvement over the prior 2 weeks.

I agree with you in principle, but -
griping about penalties in a game that had fairly few of them, (and when there were much larger issues to gripe about, 2nd half O playcalling for instance), doesn’t make much sense.

Just an opinion:. Gilbert had been calling a bland game because that is all he can call. TD can run on designed plays and can throw when the OLine blocks well. He does not seem to work through his progressions consistently. While GS has good sense on running the ball and making something out of nothing on broken plays, yet his passing is rusty (I will hold off a strong opinion until GS has had a few games to show his abilities).

I agree with other posters that Gilbert had more diverse run plays last night. I think GS also helps to cover the bad snaps we are plagued with. TD clearly throws a better ball but the OLine is not ready to be a pass oriented line. GS offers the better instincts on broken plays.

If Gilbert can expand the diversity of plays he calls with either - or - both, then the team will be better.

Yup. GS has to show Gilbert he can trust him.

Hopefully, that happens in practice this week.

We had five penalties.

A week after we set the all-time program record for penalty yardage against Albany. And a week before that, we had 8 penalties. It's been a problem all year long.

But next time, I'll submit my comments for pre-screening to the pay site moderators. ; )

I did love the first play of the game. That was the only time they really looked deep mdmeep off play action and it probably helped somewhat.

you cant run play action when teams run blitz it will just get the QB killed.

We ran that I formation with the FB in front of the QB again and the play went for -5 yards, pushing our average yards per play from that formation down to -4 yards*. For the love of all that is holy, why has that part of our playbook not been cast into the sun yet?

*not an actual stat but also probably not far off

I don't understand it at all. Bringing people into the box for our average fb /hback to try to move is less effective than putting a wr at the sideline that they have to cover

the penalties were negligible. 5 in a game is normal. I just want to see us clean up the fall starts.

His former team pretty much told us what to expect and he’s called plays pretty much as they said he would. The playcalling has been reminiscent of watching Shafer teams at times or almost entire games. So this has less to do with the QB’s in the game and more to do with, Gilbert calling plays like he has in the past.

This ^^^^

Seemed like they played not to lose as the second half went on.

Same thing when they played Ohio w/ Tommy. Dino / Sterlin played not to lose that game.

At some point there will be an intersection where they just need to trust the team and take a bit of a leap of faith.

Technically they have to cover the wr but eventually they’ll realize we wont or can’t get the ball to them.

But you do understand that we have a RB that is second in the nation in rushing right? Our Wr's havent been killing it. We cant even get the ball in their hands most of the time. The run game is all we have right now and people dont want to utlize Mang/ Elmore? That makes no sense. If we were passing for lots of yards I would feel differently. Until we do that, we need to continue to use the sets that work for us. We have to stop thinkling that having more wr's on the field is more effective. Its not a simple as that. If it was then everyone will run 5 wr sets. Its based on numbers on the perimeter and personnel. For example, FSU might have good cover guys but a soft box that we can take advantage of. Some teams might decide to stop our run more and give us opportunities to throw peremeter screen and short passes underneath. You have to take advantage of numbers and match ups. Its different for each opponent.

I think Taj was the safety valve on that play and he gave up on it. He seemed as surprised as I was that Shrader passed it to him. It was very close to being a fumbled lateral.
