Gilbert play calling vs Liberty

I wonder how much of Gilbert’s conservative play calling in the second half was Shrader’s throwing or Servais’s snapping.

Hard to call pass plays that rely on timing when your Center is spraying it all over the backfield.

Harder to get your QB in an early rhythm throwing short passes without destroying drives because he’s deciding whether to fall on it for a 6 yard loss or fight to get back to the LOS.

Amazing how well the offense functioned in the early going when every third snap was an adventure.

Very disappointed that this is still an issue with an OL that has as much playing experience. Hope a permanent solution is in development.

You can tell the play calling was geared to run the ball and be safe with the pass game. The pass game is limited right now. ( its not our strength). Putting us in 3rd and long situations losses games. The staff wanted to make sure they took advantage of what they can do against Liberty. The game could have went the other way but we pulled through. We have to find a way to get some type of effieciency with the pass game. Whether its playing Devito in certain situations or designing pass plays that are better for GS. I hope GS can improve his throwing in time.

I don't think he'll really be able to work on his throwing motion until the offseason. Until then the passing game is just going to be limited, hopefully with minimal mistakes made

Regarding penalties, recall SU did start collecting them at the beginning of the game "here we go again" making me crazy -fortunately that trend stopped and hopefully same for rest of the season.

1, 4, 8, 19, 13

The total yards for our last 5 drives

I am pumped for the win but petrified for our future games
If they fix a couple of those high snaps, and complete that screen that was open other than the pressure on GS, he probably clears 100 yards and these stats don’t look so bad. 86 the lateral to Taj, good grief

if Liberty is gonna send 6-7 guys from our run sets then our 7 guys have to make some blocks so the WRs can win 1x1 a couple times.. If they cant do that then you are better off running and as Tucker showed he can make 1 guy miss and gain yds in tight spaces. The offense moved the ball up until Liberty really went after the run sets. have to re-watch to see why they had free runners so often. Hopefully its more mental mistakes again.

You have to think FSU saw what they did and will be doing much of the same until we have an answer to it. But give Liberty some credit we ran several pretty good plays against what they were trying to do and they ran to the ball well and stopped those too.. We didnt run the same 4-5 plays we ran several plays we have not run all yr and they handled them.

I think we need to run a few more bubble screens. if teams are gonna run those 5-6-7 in the box and attack and you run the bubble there are not 3-4 guys out there any more to make the play. Problem is TD throws that ball better and faster than Shrader and hard to run them when snaps are all messed up.

I thought the O play calling was a lot better. The triple option, Tucker and Adams both in the backfield, more motion, running off tackle.

Obviously it would be better to have a great passing attack as well but I thought the run calls were good and mixed it up for most of the game. And it was great to see the O line have a great game
They been running off tackle all year. They have run more outside zone than inside dives consistently.

they had two back sets vs Rutgers

But you do understand that we have a RB that is second in the nation in rushing right? Our Wr's havent been killing it. We cant even get the ball in their hands most of the time. The run game is all we have right now and people dont want to utlize Mang/ Elmore? That makes no sense. If we were passing for lots of yards I would feel differently. Until we do that, we need to continue to use the sets that work for us. We have to stop thinkling that having more wr's on the field is more effective. Its not a simple as that. If it was then everyone will run 5 wr sets. Its based on numbers on the perimeter and personnel. For example, FSU might have good cover guys but a soft box that we can take advantage of. Some teams might decide to stop our run more and give us opportunities to throw peremeter screen and short passes underneath. You have to take advantage of numbers and match ups. Its different for each opponent.
With Rhino back this week would like to only play 2 WR, Alford and Harris, use Mang as your 3rd receiver, if Benson is back make him the 4th. Give Garrett 3 big bodies, and a good receiver in Harris to throw to. Also 2 extra blockers in 2 TE.

Yeah I agree. In time was referring to future seasons. Right now just give him throws he can handle. Put in plays that allows his to throw routes he’s most comfortable with.

Big body set. I like it. It also allows you to take some shots down field with Harris and Alford.

And even if they stuff the box you have 8 blockers, and all Tucker needs is a seam. If teams get to aggressive on defense you have a possible pop pass over the Middle.

yuck

The object is to win games , not to look pretty. If you don't like that you aren't forced to be a fan. There has been 2 much losing in the last 20 years, we need to find a way to win games consistently.

You aren’t going to win many games turtling up and playing two tight ends with a fullback

you have a line that is playing ok and a special tailback, need to create space not invite more defensive players into the box

Agree could use the bubble but zero faith in wr blocking.

Technically they have to cover the wr but eventually they’ll realize we wont or can’t get the ball to them.
Doesn't matter, they have to cover. Shrader can do that, most punters can

Just because Tucker is good doesn't mean that Elmore makes them better

Curious who your favorite NFL team is

The way the game is played today offends people. Moving a player out of the way without any concussions and making it easy on your QB to make decisions is immoral to some

You dont think Elmore provides anything to the run game? Interesting. Its has nothing to do with preference. We dont pass the ball well my man. Devito only has two 300 yard games in 18 starts. We havent been a great passing team in quite some time. Lining someone at slot doesnt make you a more explosive offense either. Its a lot more to it. Its based on numbers and match ups. Thats how teams determine how to attack. My team throw the ball 35 times a game. We air it out. That's a lot for a HS team but that's our philosophy and what we do best. Im a Patriots fan.

I knows it's about numbers. You can bring a defender in the box and try to have a hybrid lineman running back block him so he doesn't tackle your rb or you park the defender on the sideline where he had no chance of tackling your rb

Did it seem like to anyone that the tempo of our offense had at least picked up in the first half of play? Play calls and execution seemed as quick as I had seen it in some time.

Right now we have an advantage with keeping a HB in the game. Playing 2x2 the whole game doesn't keep players from tackling your RB. Do you really think its that simple? Playing Mang/Elmore in packages is not as bad as you think it is. Allows us to do multiple run zone read concepts with the QB. Thats what we are good at. We havent shown any type of consistency throwing the ball in 2x2 and 3x1 sets.

the penalties were negligible. 5 in a game is normal. I just want to see us clean up the fall starts.

Up until the last game, penalties have been a huge problem -- false starts have also been a consistent problem, and create setbacks for a team that isn't built to pass. Have to get that remediated.
