Gill, Locksley, Holtz ...

Don't forget Edsall.

It sounds like Gross wanted to hire both Edsall and Holtz, but couldn't make it happen. Marrone was a fall-back. Sometimes fortune smiles on you.

Yeah, I suppose in the end all that matters is who you end up with. I never really bought into Holtz or Locksley, but I was all in on Gill and thought Edsall was a pretty solid coach.

JerseyOrange was all in on Golden, if I recall. The jury is out on whether we dodged a bullet with him, from a recruiting violation standpoint if nothing else.

And Golden got smoked at KSt last week, 50 something non competitive blowout.

A (very) few of us knew the right move.

I'll be completely honest, I was very, very disappointed at the moment that I found out Marrone was the guy (I was an Al Golden guy but would have been ok with Edsall or Holtz). But after hearing him speak that first day, I just had a feeling he was the guy.

Probably liking his opening speech is a stupid reason to like a coach but he got me that first day and I haven't jumped off the bandwagon since. I'm hoping to be rewarded for my patience beginning this year (and I think I will be).

I have no doubt he's the guy now. We can gripe about punt decisions and other minor things, but we are absolutely on the way up, and he has been able to sell the vision, which is on display this year, finally. If anyone is going to get the football alumni back on board, it's Marrone - with Floyd's help.

Everyone of the coaches, including Marrone, is underwhelming at best.

Agree totally. Have my gripes with his in-game management. Its his most glaring weakness IMO.

But I have little doubt that he's making all the right moves on Sunday-Friday in coaching these guys up, restocking the shelves, building depth (even through JUCOs if necessary), and putting together a nice coaching staff on both sides of the ball.

But I will waver this year if I don't start seeing wins. Watching the team the first two games (along with watching our conference brethren) and considering the depth we finally have, new high-paced offense with a senior QB, improving defense, and being surrounded by a bunch of awful football in our conference, he has no excuses to not have this team ready to perform at a high level.

If he is as good of a head football coach as I think he is, he needs to be towards the top of the league this year (2 or 3 losses acceptable). There really are no excuses that I can see.

I expected 7-5 this year, and if we get to that I will be content. But the team has looked better than I expected them to, by a large large margin. Woods and Lee were exceptional last week, but apart from them we 100% looked like we belonged on the same field with U$C. I was astonished by how athletic the defense looked. I haven't seen a D like that from us since somewhere in the 1998 - 2001 time frame.

Even though I expected 7-5, I do believe we can win every game remaining, without having to hope for lucky breaks.

We are on the same page. 7-5 was my expectation also with one of those wins being Northwestern. I continue to believe we will be 7-5 with us now picking up a win elsewhere (can you say at USF?)

Agree with everything else you said.

Personally had no idea which guy made the most sense at the time. I think Gill was at the bottom of my list though but I don't think I knew why. Just didn't think he was the right fit and wasn't convinced that success at Buffalo equaled success at SU. I think Holtz I probably liked the most and my only hang up with him is that his dad is such a douchebag.

But, once I read "the article" I wanted Marrone before I even finished reading.

thats why you dont hire the next best thing. you hire someone thats established. we are in the ACC. we have the conference and money to hire talent. what we dont have, however, is the commitment.

For instance, L'Ville is on the outside looking in. Wont be hard to get charlie strong for 4 years before he moves on to Florida etc. Another great choice out there is mark helfrich. this should be his last yr as coordinator and skill players will flock to him no matter where he is.

Are your choices as solid as your Gillespie choice was?

marrone's advantage over those guys is being a su grad. i don't think he can underestimate this advantage. he knows the culture of the university. also know the recruiting landscape. i know a lot of people didn't like the first open spring practice out in rochester but i think that's one of many reasons why he is great for the job. the greater rochester area has 1 million people. there are kids there that play football. has it translated into D1 recruits, no. atleast not yet. but maybe in 10 years. same for the city. and the coaches clinics he gives. i wanted gill, then holtz but more than happy with what we have right now. but, we haven't won anything yet. no big east championships in the weakest conference in fbs. i think if we don't win this year a lot of rats start jumping off the marrone ship. and i think they should after watching these first 2 games because i know they have the athletes now and the systems.

Too early to say we dodged anything. I know we've seen signs of improvement (vast improvement), but until that translates to wins, I will refrain from singing praises. I know for us its hard to not feel good because we have looked so bad for so long that these last 2 losses were the best looking losses we've had in a decade. Lets get some of these big east games under our belt before we really start to get the warm and fuzzies, and singing campfire songs about our coaching staff again. Believe me, I want to be able to mention our team again in public without hearing snickering in the background too.

I went and listened to Marrone speak that first summer after he was hired when he did his bus tour around CNY and I was floored. I was rooting for Holtz at the time but after hearing Marrone and his vision, I knew he was the guy. It was maybe going to take a bit longer than I wanted but it was clear then that he was going to rebuild the program the right way with a solid foundation to get us back to being a consistent winner. And I think that is where we are headed. Yes, I think he has made some mistakes along the way but what coach doesn't. But the mistakes he has made, like game management decisions, are correctable. I'm fully on the bandwagon.

Kiffin after the game:

"You fly all the way to the east coast, you go two days early to a place you've never been to before. It's their Super Bowl and you come out and suddenly nobody shows up. So the crowd is dead, there's no juice, you got an hour delay. All those things guys are how people that are average lose games. That first half the defense was kicking some ass. That team was leading the world in passing. So there were some really good stuff to build on right there."

I was for Marrone at the time of the GRob hire.

I remember there were a few of you guys. The next 4 games are critical. No worse than 3-3.
