Gill, Locksley, Holtz ...

Everyone of the coaches, including Marrone, is underwhelming at best.

Out of all of those coaches, Holtz doesn't quite deserve to be in the peasant class with Gill and especially Locksley. It is a match made in heaven that Locksley is with Edsall now.

Marrone has not been underwhelming. Has he seen the results that many of us with high expectations want? No, not quite. Based on the athleticism he's pulled in recruiting wise, we can be competitive with teams like USC. GRob's team would've lost that game 63-7. But he has been far short of underwhelming. Let's let this season play out out before making ignorant comments like this.

Um a little early to say we dodged a bullet. Gill was a disaster at KU. Would he have been at SU? B12 > BE FB. Locksley was a mess off the field. So no matter what we are better off. Holtz and HCRE have been disappointing thus far. But they haven't failed yet. Just like Marrone hasn't succeeded yet. Why don't we let things play out a little here. Do you think USF or MD fans are wishing they had Marrone who has lost 7 straight? Sounds silly doesn't it?

Completely valid. We haven't done anything to boast...yet. But pull this bad boy out in 2 years and come talk to me. I'll be right, you'll be wrong. Its taken 4 years, but we're almost there.

If you are what your record says you are, and Marrone's record is underwhelming, well...

There are reasons to be optimistic about Marrone two games in to this season, but there's an awful lot of self congratulation being handed out in this thread.

I think everybody's favorite whipping boy Hackett deserves some credit too. He is going to become a very good coach.

Fixed it for you.

He's been shorthanded, and still managed to squeeze his way into a bowl his 2nd year. His overall record, considering the depth issues and the relatively bare cupboards, has been what it should be. The difference this year is depth.

Quick example: WRs are dropping like flies and we are still able to field 3 pretty good ones. Last year, Mike Acchione caught a TD pass. There's your difference. Depth. I can't say that word enough. No excuses this year. If he doesn't win this year, I'll be hanging out with you on the dark side.

I'm not on the dark side, I'm just not on the rainbows and unicorns side.

Career records of coaches of interest since Marrone's hire:

Kiffen - 27 and 13, 1 bowl loss, 2 other seasons bowl eligible by record without a bowl invite due to NCAA infractions

Golden - 24 and 15, 1 bowl loss, 2 other seasons bowl eligible without a bowl invite, one of which the U decided to withdraw from any bowl invite due to ongoing investigation

Holtz - 24 and 17, 1 bowl loss and 1 bowl win

Edsall - 20 and 20, 1 BCS bowl loss, 1 bowl win

Marrone - 17 and 22, 1 bowl win

Gill - 10 and 26

Locksley - 2 and 26, has the funniest line of any in his Wikipedia entry "Locksley led his Lobos to 1–11 records his first and second seasons." (emphasis added)

Make what you will of the above. For whatever it's worth, Marrone's record against those coaches is pretty bad. I could be wrong, but my count he's 1 and 5 against those coaches.

Wrong.

Per usual.

You're right. In the relevant time period (2009-present), Edsall has been to a BCS game, so I was a little too harsh on him.

I wonder if Marrone's record would be better than 17-22 if he had USC talent (or even USF)? Apples/Oranges. We were coming off a stretch of 10-38. Clearly there was some program building that needed to take place before we were ever going to rack up wins. He's built back depth, its now time for him to start winning games, and lots of them. We shall see if he's good enough to do so.

Let's hope Marrone's record would be better than 17 and 22 with USC talent.

Whats the point of referencing Kiffen? He wasn't coming here in a thousand million years

I'll give you Golden for what he accomplished at Temple, in his first HC gig...

Don't forget that Edsall started 11-23 his first three years there and he was 41-51 after his first 8 years at UConn

Holtz hasn't failed yet, but he's taking a decent program and driving it into the ground. USF was 9-4, 9-4, 8-5 & 8-5 the four years before he got there. Compare that to the Grob years..

Gill & Locksley were not good

So would you take the Early Edsall Years in exchange for the later Edsall years??

Yawn.

You've turned into the Adam Schein of syracusefan.com

thats why you dont hire the next best thing. you hire someone thats established. we are in the ACC. we have the conference and money to hire talent. what we dont have, however, is the commitment.

For instance, L'Ville is on the outside looking in. Wont be hard to get charlie strong for 4 years before he moves on to Florida etc. Another great choice out there is mark helfrich. this should be his last yr as coordinator and skill players will flock to him no matter where he is.

Holtz did some good things at ECU before USF...

Remember when we were set to fly Chip Kelly out? Forced Oregon to hire him and he never made it. I wanted him.

i can't help but think of Mr. Wolf's best line in pulp fiction when the other guys were a little too proud of themselves

I was thinking EXACTLY the same line, and was wondering whether to type it or not. LOL

That was disappointing as soon as the Oregon AD found out the old coach got the boot and Kelly was brought in. I think they saw the writing on the wall, he is an east coast guy, correct?

Yeah. He started off as the o-coordinator at the University of New Hampshire and won a ton of accolades for a D2 coach. He was then hired as the o-coordinator at Oregon and the rest is history. They definitely saw the writing on the wall.

Kiffen is someone people have talked about.

The objective of the post was to just show records since Marrone's hire.

Kelly also worked the SU camps in the summer.
