GMAC / Blackwell / AO to Siena

That being the case, I wonder why SU never considered seriously adding him to the roster. I know Dotys friend said SU never made Doty feel like they were interested in him.

SU didn't even end up using all our scholarships for this year, did we?

Like I said, I have watched this kid play a lot this year on ESPN plus. He definitely could have helped us, - he is a relentless energizer bunny, no ball is safe from him stealing it. Amazing how much this kid has improved in just the last month. According to Gerry Doty is a tireless worker, who never gives up on anything. I watched him have 3 steals in the last 40 seconds of a game they were trailing by 8,(ended up losing by 1!)

Huge miss on Reds part.
He is 6-5 so he has the guard height we always liked at SU, is really quick, a very young freshman ( 4th youngest player in the country) and recently entered their starting lineup.
Averaged 20 points the last 3 games, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals.

Siena just beat Quin by 9 who is first in their league and lost to Quin by 19 3 weeks ago.
Doty played 38 minutes scored 19 points with 50% FG shooting. Had 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals.

If you want to just watch a college game for fun ( and not find yourself knashing your teeth in frustration!), watch some of the Siena games on ESPN Plus. They are all there for the rest of the year.
I have ESPN Plus packaged with HULU.

These kids show relentless energy and toughness, never giving up.
They really reflect who Gerry is as a person and who he was as a player.
Currently 10-12 after winning only 4 games last year.on the bench
Have been without 2 starters for the last several games, one being acknowledged by Gerry as the leader of the team.

They are playing St Peters tonight at 7.
And don't forget that he is the leading rebounder on the team.

I'm not sure anyone projected him having this type of a breakout. The first six games, he was buried on the bench, playing single digit minutes as a 5th guard. For those that haven't watched, GMac has played basically a three guard lineup, with the original starters being Jackson, Freeman and Ducharme. Sholtes was the 1st guard off the bench and Doty basically played scrub minutes.

Then, as Siena struggled, Sholtes replaced Ducharme in the lineup and Doty moved up in the pecking order as 1st guard off the bench. Abd then, of course, Jackson got injured seven games ago, and Doty's game really blossomed as he moved into the starting lineup.

So, I guess it could be possible, if Ducharme never struggled and Jackson never got injured, that Doty would still be averaging single digit minutes. But, he's really taken advantage of the opportunity and opened up a lot of eyes of people from all over.

I think Doty was a big miss for all the larger programs not just SU. He played for City Rocks- AAU- and didn’t get any major programs interested. He spent a year at a prep school, Phelps in Pennsylvania, his junior year to get more experience and exposure too but returned to Fulton to complete his senior year. He’s only started at Siena the last 7 games and had played limited rotational minutes the previous 15 games before that. Classic late bloomer who has worked hard and flourished at Siena. I don’t see where there is blame to access on all the programs to have passed on him. He’s just a great story of how hard work, the correct situation, confidence and opportunity worked out for both him and Siena.

I think Gerry undoubtedly knew, or he wouldn't have said that Doty was to be the centerpiece and poster child for what he wanted his team to stand for. That he was the first recruit he focused on getting.
Gerry was still the assistant coach at SU when most high school recruits would have been signed.
You can only assume that what Gerry saw in this kid was not considered important to Red.
Perhaps evidence that culture was in no way a priority for Red.
And that he didn't really listen very much to the assistant head coach's opinion.
Lets not forget that Gerry was Maliq's primary recruiter. And what kind of player was Maliq, and how much do we desperately miss him.
It only bothers me because he would have taken a scholarship from us if offered, and I believe we had an extra scholarship that we never used.

In a recent interview, he talked about when he would pull a player off the court.
He said he wouldn't do it for making a mistake - he said basketball is a learning process after all.
But he said if he sees anyone giving half effort, off the court they will come.
He cited a game earlier this year when he felt a player was not giving maximum effort. He called a timeout, replaced his ass on the court and let him know that half efforts would not be tolerated on his team. Mistakes he could live with, but not lack of effort.
He told his team on day one the two most important things to know about what he expected from his team.
1) If anyone falls down during practice or a game (including the opponent), you help them up. Always show sportsmanship.
2) Always give maximum effort when you are playing. If you dont, you wont play.
I thought it was interesting that he said sportsmanship was the most important, then maximum effort.

Doty 9 point, 9 rebound, 4 assists, 3 steals

One play kind of summed up Doty in the second half.
Siena was up by 16 when he went all out to get a loose ball, flew into and over the bench but still managed to throw the ball off a St. Peter’s player.

The announcers said something interesting.
That Gerry is the best in the MAAC in 2 areas - for the best plays out of a time out and for making the best half time adjustments.

That play was outstanding. The best way to explain Doty is that he can impact the entire game without filling up the scorebook, as was the case in the first half. But somehow, he seems to be moving at 78 rpm's while everyone else is at 33 rpm.*

* You might need to be 60 or above to understand that analogy.

Here is the video of the play.

I heard that and then watched them struggle to get the ball in on the press in garbage time quite a few times. That said they are so much more active on defense and offense than another team I follow, it makes you think what the records of each team would be if the coach's switched and took each other's roster.

I watched the post game interview.
Gerry was so upset. He literally told the announcer how glad he was that he got the win but he couldn't really enjoy it because of how many turnovers they had in the second half. He promised that breakdown would never happen again. Understand this happened because the lead was so large and some players got lazy. I guarantee Gerry will get in the players ears and it wont happen again.

My take: regardless how Red performs as a HC, we're going to regret having GMac coach elsewhere. His team is a great watch and plays the type of basketball that a fan can get behind.

If Gerry had been named HC, the board meltdown would have made the Chris Ash uproar look cute.
but that's not what I was discussing. I understand why he wasn't chosen as our HC, I'm just saying that I believe we'll regret that he's not coaching here. He's been able to get his team, a team of all new pieces, to play good basketball.

I think we made a huge mistake hiring Red instead of Gerry but I understand why it happened.
Red had seniority and was a better recruiter.
And frankly the optics of choosing Gerry over Red without any evidence he would be the better coach would have been awful.
To be honest, I thought Gerry would be the better coach because of the intangibles.
I thought his teams would be high energy and have a never surrender attitude. And the Siena team does have all that. That kind of attitude invariably leads to on court success.
But I truly believed Red would be a good in game coach as far as the Xs and Os are concerned.
I could not have been more wrong.

For sure but there is also a chance the board uproar would not be as loud today. Moot points as the AD's hands were tied.

If JB wanted his successor to be different he didn't set it up to have it happen, and likely didn't think to do it because he had no thought of leaving.

I mean it’s Siena and they won 4 games last year. The bar there is low.

I’m happy for Gerry but let’s give him some time before saying it was a mistake not to give him the SU job.

ETA: also Gerry would have also been handcuffed here with middling roster and not enough NIL compete.

I was told by friends at the time that it was common knowledge at SU that JB wanted Gerry to be his successor. I have absolutely no idea if that was the case, or just the words of a Gerry supporter.
I do find it odd though that JB isnt apparently around the program anymore.
Perhaps he is too busy?
Is he going to be part of the Final Four reunion tomorrow? He was an assistant with that team after all.
