Gmac

The good news is we are already grooming Devo to move into the next open seat.

I honestly think Devondorf would be better sitting in a players family room talking basketball and life than Gmac would. I wouldn't be opposed to see Eric as an assistant.

The Mountain West is not any better than the Patriot League. Both leagues suck. Gillon plays well against midmajors. He doesn't play well against the big boys, like I said. 14 points per game in the Mountain West means next to nothing.

What was the last Mountain West game you've watched? It's a very talented league.

GMac jumped to a premiere job and it's not like our school recruits for itself like Kansas/Duke/Kentucky do.
We need assistants who can either develop talent or recruit well. I don't think GMac does either well now which is why he should have worked up.
I agree. My OP was just to say it happens. Not often, but it happens.

I love the fact our staff contains alumni. Love it. But it should not be the primary criteria for choosing a staff. Basketball or football.

Lax, on the other hand... ;)

GMac didn't hire GMac. And it isn't really his fault that he was in a situation where he got promoted--which happened after Bernie Fine got fired. That was a perfectly acceptable short term / stop gap move by Boeheim and the program to offset Fine's departure.

The question is: would we have been better off making him an interim AC, and then going out and filling that hole in the staff with somebody with a proven track record of success? And I believe that the answer is a resounding "yes."

And I qualify this by acknowledging that I am appreciative of all of GMac's contributions to the program, as a player and as a coach.
I don't disagree I applied to Yale Law School even though I knew it was a reach.
JB was fine for giving him the slot when it came open during the season but once the season ended he should have done a search.
Who did Autry replace? Rob Murphy right? Who recruited MI well and was outside of the SU family.

My brother works in the athletic department at Hawaii. I watch a lot of Mountain West games being on the west coast. I wouldn't say the league sucks but it isn't a league I would point out outside of the P-5 that is very good. I also wouldn't call it very talented. The West Coast Conference is much better even outside of Gonzaga in my opinion.

Comparing it to the Patriot League though?

I agree 100%. Recruiting has been well covered. He inexplicably was given way too much responsibility for 2017 guys and struck out.

Your second point, I think this is a great point and HUGE thing nobody has really mentioned. Howard, Joseph, Buss, Cooney, Gillon, Battle to a certain extent have all under performed on his watch. We had one of the best positional coaches in the country in Hop who was cranking out pros and making great guard play the foundation of the program. That went away to bring an unproven coach and recruiter on board. We went from having guard play and development of our guards be a huge strength to now it's been a weakness since Ennis left. I view Gbinije as more of a flat out basketball player than someone who is strictly a guard we developed.

If he isn't bringing in recruits or really developing guys behind the scenes what is the value to having him on staff? Didn't totally understand it at the time and now it looks even worse in hindsight. When a spot opened why didn't we bring in a big man coach who had recruiting ties? Instead we moved a GREAT positional coach off the guards and then did nothing to enhance our efforts in raising the talent level on the roster. It was a gamble that hasn't paid off the last few years.
I wish I didn't agree with this.

This is a great post, because this is a horrible idea. Not a diss toward you but the rep Devendorf has compared to Gmac. Not to mention Gmac has a much higher basketball IQ. Quite an interesting idea though

Devo and the recruits could compare tats :noidea:

Instant rapport!

I don't think it's out of line saying that Devo would probably relate more to the "hip hop generation" than Gmac.

Devo has had his share of lumps and has overcome them. Pretty much booted from Syracuse, played pro ball, comes back and gets his degree and is now on the bench at a school most people would think he wouldn't be "welcomed" back to let alone sitting on the bench in a coaching aspect.

IMO, he came back and became a success after a lot of self reflection and hard work, something I don't think Gmac can say. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Does anyone know what Hopkins plans on doing?
Is he going to mix it up or is he going to be Boeheim 2.0?
