He is a good but not great passer, we are not going to succeed with him just throwing

He is the only good runner and we can't block. So put Neal out a mile away and clear space for dungey on draws. You don't need to block a guy standing by the coaches

Make it like a wildcat but with lots of passes

Dungey's best games are where he's doing it all. He's going to be reckless and at risk of hits anyway. Mahoney is competent and devito is the future.

We are not getting bowl eligible with running backs getting carries and we're not getting bowl eligible with leach style passing. Go all in on dungey dual threat

completely agree with this

Yeah I do until it comes to a crashing stop with an injury mid way through the 2nd quarter of the Pitt game but again I don't disagree with the premise. We aren't running the ball this year with any consistency that's pretty evident

Dungey is going to play caution to the wind and run the ball most of the time anyway. There's no way to avoid it, so I've stopped worrying about him getting injured.

Mahoney could run the same offense and do the same things. Watered down version of course, but his legs work and sometimes his arm does too.

Just exploit the mismatches. Strickland can be part of it too. Pierce can be a hybrid, sometimes helping pass protect, sometimes going out to catch.

Elmore is the one who wouldn't really fit in. Lining him up outside seems like a waste. We can use him closer to the goal line.

So be it. That's the risk they have to take. And the gap between Dungey and whoever would be second on the depth chart isn't nearly as vast as the perception.

CUSE needs to get #22 Pierre in the game and run him wide on sweeps and reverses. Need trickery for I think it will open up the middle for some power runs.

I'm all in at this point. I don't worry about him getting hurt anymore and if he does then Mahoney's up next.

Yes and the good news is his strength build up is great to help with injury avoidance. His neck and torso are jacked unlike previous years so I think (barring another Stanitzek cheap hit) he will be better able to handle hits this year, as we've already seen.

This is such a terrible idea lol

So you want empty sets every possession? Defenses would just play nickel and blanket Erv or double team Ish.

Even Washington State attempts to run. You need to keep the defense honest. Even if you suck at running.

I actually agree 100% with you on this.

I was screaming that last weekend. Dungey is our best player, so give him all the plays and let him do what he excels at... scrambling and grinding. He is a backyard football QB. It can work.

I said this after Middle Tennessee State.. he just seems to function much better. Not sure if it's the option to run or having more options.

I think you need to read the subject and original post again.

Maybe it's not feasible, and it's probably not going to happen (although we went empty a lot on Saturday, mostly via motion). But no one is saying we wouldn't run the ball.

I agree, but in moderation. This empty-backfield method does not allow for player development (especially on the OLine) and I don't think we can become a 8-9 win PROGRAM without a somewhat conventional running attack. Not sure this is apples to apples, but the reason the 2012 squad finished 8-5 and won 6 of its last 7 games is the running attack came to fruition (and meshed nicely with Nassib's passing game). Jerome Smith and P-T Gulley both averaged more than 5.0 per carry that year.

then just stick butler back at QB and run it that way, he seems to be able to throw..

I don't think our running backs are keeping defenses honest. The threat of Dungey running probably does as much for that if not more.

NC state had a LB on Erv all game, meaning they weren't in nickel, meaning they had to respect the run at least a little bit

Yeah I mean I get the idea, have Dungey be the runner and design runs for him but ... does anyone here really trust our OL to be able to create lanes with just a 4 man pressure? Idk. I think we need to change something with our ground game but abandoning all RB's isn't it.

The trick with ED running is putting him in the best position to do so, by design. Spreading them out works - zone read works. Just need something to draw the LB and S in a bit.

This is how we beat VaTech last year.

Have dungey run draws when they double our wrs

Here's the thing though; doesn't matter if opponents play nickel, dime, whatever, we can't run... Going empty or running option out wide is our only chance at this point...

It would need to be a pass/run option for him. A draw is a committed run. All depends on our sets and how they line up.

I think at the end of the day it's just painfully obvious that Strick isn't our best option at RB
