Go empty and make dungey your running game

Here's the thing though; doesn't matter if opponents play nickel, dime, whatever, we can't run... Going empty or running option out wide is our only chance at this point...

And in our current offense we are 2 or 3 plays away from beating LSU and NC State in their buildings.

I'm not saying our running game is good, because it isn't, but I think dialing back penalties and limiting big plays is more important than scrapping the running game

I will say this - and it looked funny - but having Elmore run is better than what we've done before. You have to honor that guy - he wants to eat nickel backs (if he ever could get out that far)

Maybe, but not this week imo... We need this game at all costs, don't hamstring the O with 1 yard plunges...

I agree, but in moderation. This empty-backfield method does not allow for player development (especially on the OLine) and I don't think we can become a 8-9 win PROGRAM without a somewhat conventional running attack. Not sure this is apples to apples, but the reason the 2012 squad finished 8-5 and won 6 of its last 7 games is the running attack came to fruition (and meshed nicely with Nassib's passing game). Jerome Smith and P-T Gulley both averaged more than 5.0 per carry that year.
Oh I want rbs running and qbs throwing

Erv DID have a Syracuse *and* ACC record # of catches - what, that wasn't enough?
50 receptions is a tad of an exaggeration, obviously.

However, note that our running backs rushed for a whopping 15 yards on 14 carries for an average of 1.07 ypc (thanks to Elmore's huge run of six yards to keep their heads proudly above the 1 yard per rush surface).

I'm willing to bet that if those 14 snaps had been tossed to Erv instead of handed off to Team One-Yard-And-A-Cloud-Of-Dust then more than 15 yards would have been produced.

I dont think the called a bad game choosing to run.. the few i wanted back where in the red zone in the 3rd when we were moving the ball, much rather just go qb over the center and play action than really hand off.. and the series in the 2nd where we were down deep and had to try a qb run. i think spread out, Phillips was open all day, a couple times though the mlb jumped the route and thats where we had to run enough to keep him honest.

keep them honest by running dungey enough

if he gets gassed, toss mahoney in for a series or two

I'm ready for the Elmore wildcat offense.

Seriously though, have to question those who don't think it's a big drop-off from Eric to Zack.

To me, Dungey is a top 25 QB nationally, especially factoring in what little he has around him in weapons/line.

Zack is a walk-on who deservedly earned a scholarship. Not Dungey, not close to Dungey, Pittsburgh game notwithstanding.

Put Dungey and Mahoney on the field together.

When u go empty the D will automatically blitz an extra guy this is the time for a quick throw not a draw with a blitzer in your face , maybe go under center a little more and establish some play action

TY, ED is just that and he is a player that has DC's attention. Everyone is at fault with the running game from Dino on down. The push off the ball has been poor and when there are holes there, seeing too many backs with their head down (poor vision). Also, the pass can set up the run just as much as the run setting up the pass game. Even if we spread out the formation in quads, most of our passing game is quick and outside the #'s. This doesn't bring defensive players outta the box. Intermediate to deep pass targets between the #'s can make the D vacate the box a bit and help the inside run game. That said, its blocking schemes and push and rb vision that gets a rb to the second level. ED is a weapon and keeps us in games, yes, he needs to get off to better starts. I think we beat Pitt by 2 tds and get it going this week. Ultimately to get to 6-6, we need to take care of the U. Got a shot.

Yeah wouldn't want to include a 440 yard, seven touchdown performance if you're arguing against Mahoney. Smart move.

This same discussion is going on here in Carolina regarding Cam Newton. Preseason most people said keep him healthy. Keep him in the pocket. Now the consensus is screw it, what good is he healthy if we can’t win?

I like this idea. Put them both in the shotgun and either could get the snap. Or, you could put one or the other in motion, or an option or a freeze option.

Right. Against a defense that couldn't stop 11 guys, or gals, selected randomly from this board.

I don't know if taking Elmore out of the backfield is a good idea. He is the last line of defense before ED gets smooshed. Haven't paid attention to Strickland's blocking to see if he is any better in that capacity.

is it too much to ask that 3-5 times a game the rb have a hole to run through where the play is designed to be run.. we can play the vision blame all we want but not every run should be a search and destroy mission.

The middle Tennessee game was rough but other than that the pass blocking has been descent , no qb gets a clean pocket series after series .

Pitts run defense is a step down from the last 2. if they dont give the Dbs help we will throw all day.. lets see if can generate just a little running game this week before we throw it all out the window.

i'd have to go back and watch but I think this is why Strickland is in the game to begin with. He's the best blocker in pass protect.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we run it fairly well Saturday (by our standards).

After that we face 3 straight defenses from hell (over a 4 week period). Hopefully FSU’s spirit is completely broken by then and the offensive problems are impacting the defense.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Moe get -1, 0, 3, 72 TD

Pitt faced some pretty good quarterbacks in 2016 - Trubisky, Watson, Rudolph, McSorley, Kaaya.

None of them matched Mahoney's seven touchdowns against their defense.

Narduzzi got beat by the same screen so much inthat game, I wonder if the staff calls it a “Narduzzi” now
