God bless Hugh Freezes arrogance

The announcers were saying earlier in the 2nd half that SU needed to key in more on Liberty's QB on 3rd/4th down short yardage plays as he was keeping the ball and getting the job done. It looks like SU's defense did just that when it needed to the most.

Freeze in his presser said that the analytics said to go for it, that the missed field goal figured into it, and that, if they didn't get it, SU would get it on the two yard line and his defense was playing well. He also thought that if he put it in the hands of his best player, he would get in. He also said he'd have to look at the film to see if the QB made the right decision to cut it up when he did.

And, by the way, there was not a shred of arrogance in any of the three press conferences Freeze gave about this game. I'm not a fan of the whole concept of Liberty as an institution and I know nothing about Hugh Freeze other than in relation to the three SU/Liberty games, but he doesn't strike me as arrogant. Believing in your team isn't arrogant in my opinion.

Exactly. He made the right choice. If his kicker was reliable the decision would be much more questionable. But even if they don’t score SU had to drive the length of the field and wasn’t showing any offense at that point. You can question his decision but he didn’t make the wrong choice. Both options made sense for different reasons.

1st & goal from the 3… They were stuffed on the 2 on 4th. That’s a damn good defensive series. That takes resilience.

And they were exhausted at that point and had given up big plays in the 2nd half prior to that. That wasn’t just a physical achievement by our D but mental as well. That’s when you know you have a solid group all around, not just 1-2 really good guys.

Not taking the easy 3 there was mind blowing. We showed no ability to move the ball on offense. If I'm dino I'm giving a game ball to Tucker...and another to Hugh.
Hugh Freeze understands expected value. He should be lauded for the decision. It’s refreshing to see a coach who understands probability. Thank god it didn’t work in that one trial.

to me if you think your D is playing well in a game like that take the 3 and the lead because we still need to go 90 or 75 after a kick and if you miss the kick or fail on 4th down its the same result.

if its a 45-42 score where D isnt working then go for the TD there.

Metrics fail in many ways.. They only measure the results of plays that happened not the plays that could have happened.. like many other stats you have small sample size and it ignores the quality of the team making the decision.

if you are a high flying passing team that struggles in the compressed red zone its hard to throw down there . if you are Ala who runs on everyone much easier.. the stats put both teams with the same chance to score in that spot

Ya it's funny how easily so many of these points can be turned on their head. "Kick because our offense wasn't doing anything". Ha, that might be a reason to go for it on the 2. It was likely they'd get it back which they did. Ultimately the fumble decided the game.
And possibly his unwillingness to call a time out and give themselves one last chance.

Probability and the numbers which make it up, work well in a vacuum and dont take into account variables, such as an opponents inept offense. In a tie game, you take the points.

If I'm Freeze, I'm seeing some flukey play like a big return on the kickoff or Sean Tucker getting loose on a wheel route or a long pass like Jackson St had against FSU. One play with everybody emotionally on edge seemed likely. The fumble is what did them in and it was a game winning play for the orange.
