Good Article On Recruiting NJ

To be fair the NJ guys we have gotten recently have done well. 3 of our defensive front 7 are from NJ.

I also think it's a tough area to break into if you don't have preexisting connections. You could end up taking multiple lower level kids from a school only to watch them puch their blue chips out of state to football factories. End game could net you a bunch of fringe players which aren't as valuable as guys we could get from areas that aren't picked to death by 20 other schools before we even get consideration.

or try to hire a coach that has connections and well respected in the area.

better yet, we never should have got out of the area

Why though? Who area the best players NJ has ever given us?

Florida has 3 times as many nfl players and we have connections there

I like Florida too.

As for NJ, it's not who they have given us in the past, but who they could give us in the future. I just believe you will have a better chance at succeeding if you recruit your region. It's easier to get kids on campus for visits, and obviously proximity for family. Florida is a no brainer though, and we have always recruited there.

Yeah, it is not an either/or situation. We have connections in Florida and they should be worked hard, but hiring a NJ guy could pay huge dividends. Rutgers is at a crossroads. They are going to a good conference, but if they flounder, they could lose the recruiting momentum they had built for a few years. Also, if they continue to burn bridges, that could close alot of doors for them. It is a good time to make a move in NJ. And, one good hire could do just that.

Off the top of my head, 5 of our best WRs of the past 20 years were all from NJ: Qadry Ismail, Kevin Johnson, Quinton Spotwood, David Tyree, Jonny Morant.

Then there was Donovan Darius and Wilky Bazille.

We've had a ton of talented kids from NJ since Coach P took over in 1990.

We are making inroads again

Landed Cabinda who ended up flipping

Also in on a bunch of mid level guys for this year and next years class

It takes time

And Nassib and Pugh play in New Jersey. So we've got that going for us.

Its a bit of a myth that NJ could pay huge dividends for us. We could get some nice players but which nj kids that went to rutgers did we really want? Khaseem Greene and whom? Rice was an ny kid, and their current nfl caliber wr Is from md. NJ does have some nice top level talent but it all ends up in ohio state, notre dame, penn state or the SEC. Those are the kids we'd want and those are the kids we won't get.

I'd rather hire a coach with connections in Texas. Look how well the second tier schools do there vs NJ.

PA has been more fruitful than NJ for us and we have some great PA talent coming in again this year. Nassib, Pugh, Hickey, Trudo... Harrison, Brinkley, Mungro, etc, etc.

1 of the things Syracuse could do... is to play a game every year in Giants Stadium.

that way all the jersey recruits will know that at least 1x a year they can showcase their talent in front of their peeps on the greatest stage in the NYC area.

sell them on starting right away. sell them on playing in perfect home conditions. sell them on being far enough away from home to become a man, yet close enough to get home for moms dinner if they need.

that would be a smart thing to do.

but alas, the local fan base has already dismissed the ACC schedule as below their standards and demands whomever we would play at Giants Stadium, to not play them there...and demand they come to the Dome, so they can go to only game of the year they feel their presence is worthy.

We will do better everywhere now that we are in the ACC. We have held our own so far, and things will only get better. It won't happen overnight, but we should climb steadily. One big win could really vault us into top 25 status. Realistically, it probably won't be today. :(

They have some linemen that I am pretty sure we would take in a heartbeat. They don't have to come in droves, but a few key players more would make a huge difference to provide depth. And it would be great to get kids from TX, but how do you convince kids in TX to come to NY? A few might do it, maybe it would be worth it. But, NJ is closer, there is talent there, and we used to grab it. It would be nice to figure out how to grab it again.

SS and his coaches have relationships all over the east and midwest and are building them as well. I'm sure he isn't foolish enough to forget a talented HS state like Jersey, give him time and he'll get his gems. This isn't an all or nothing scenario.

that's all i am suggesting. a handful of guys each season.

it's also pretty interesting that for all the grief we get for having a poor recruiting territory,we actually have 3 of the most productive (NFL wise) states bordering us. Problem is we only really recruit 1 of those states :noidea:

exactly, i dont see a need to be spending all the time and $$ needed in texas, fla, cali etc. when jersey, ohio and pa should provide enough for Syracuse to eat.

i think we have a toe-hold in ga and fla now anyway.

plus NYC-LI has provided a few gems as well.

Perhaps I misunderstood your initial premise. Seems as though some think it should be one of our top 2 areas to recruit. While im not saying we should ignore it, i have it much further down the list.

NFL players by state:
California 225
Florida 186
Texas 184
Georgia 95
Ohio 74
New Jersey 63
Louisiana 62
Pennsylvania 58

That's why we focus where do. OH + NJ + PA = Fla. Not really shocking that the most talent comes from states that play football year round either. Louisiana puts out twice as many pros, per capita, vs New Jersey

at some point, id expect jersey to go the 7 on 7 spring/summer route and that # could double.

7 on 7s is the key to the doorway of speed.

Not questioning this premise, but how does it develop speed? Is it just more practice time, and the these seasons are focused on speed training?

Goes through the US population per state and number of NFL players per state. What is really interesting is the differential which looks at number of NFL players (surrogate marker for high quality player) per state population. Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Cali are the top 5. New York is the worst state. But, on the flip side also goes into the globalization of the game. Lot of variables out there- concussion data driving some parents to not let their kids play, more kids in Europe (esp Germany playing).

At the end of the day you won't get the top end kids from the top five states but there is still plenty of good players from the second tier. Still, makes you wonder what New York State could be with more 7 on 7 leagues developing. The athletes are there. Just look at the rosters of most college basketball teams.

i have no idea why they aren't allowed to to 7 on 7 right now anyways. stupidest rule ever. same goes for NY..As RICuse says we aren't even giving ourselves a chance

Although any changes made now would probably take 4-6 years to see an effect.
