Good Article On Recruiting NJ

Not questioning this premise, but how does it develop speed? Is it just more practice time, and the these seasons are focused on speed training?
usually a 25 second play clock & 4 seconds for qb to throw, puts the emphasis on a precise and fast route. CBs not in a zone. LBs 5 yards off the ball...its not speed training but speed football.

teaches no wasted movements.

2nd tier Ohio talent currently kicking the snot out of 2nd tied NJ talent BTW.

I am born and raised in NJ, am an alum of an NJ HS Football power (Bergen Catholic), and I follow NJ HS football pretty closely. We need to get better connections in these schools, and we can, Pitt has recruited just as well or even better than Rutgers recently in NJ. If Pitt can do it, why can't we?

The (arguably) best HS team in the nation this year is St. Joes of Montvale, NJ. They're dominating everyone they play, and they are thought of as 2nd tier usually, behind Don Bosco, and Bergen Catholic. Paramus Catholic in NJ has the ESPN #2 player in the country. We can use these guys. They are better than what we are getting.

are they? how many NJ players are making huge impacts in college or the nfl? would love to hear some names.

(Not just aimed at you, aimed at all the "we NEED nj" supporters)

Look at some of the names on that list. The best part was a lot of them (Flacco, Miles Austin, Victor Cruz, etc) weren't highly recruited. There is a bunch of NFL All Pro's on that list. NJ kids take time to develop because of the rules not allowing 7 on 7/Spring practices. You can hit home runs on under recruited kids.

Cushing, McCourty Brothers, Moreno, Tamba Hali, MuHammad Wilkerson, Flacco, BJ Raji. There are plenty.

And I don't think we NEED nj, I just think it is a waste to be (somewhat) close to it, and not take any advantage. It is the best HS Football in the entire Northeast by far. Why not use it instead of relying on the best players in NY, and 3rd tier Florida recruits?

I wish all you guys would stop comparing other states to NJ and saying "per capita."

Per Capta is not that important.

You know what is important? I'll give you a hint... it was mentioned in the article .

What's important is The size of New Jersey.

I don't give a rats nuts how many people live in NJ, I care how close all the top high schools and talent are to each other.

Texas and Florida may have 3X as many pros as NJ and GA may have 50% more while PA and OH have similar numbers, BUT...

With NJ being so small, a coach could target any collection of 10 top tier prospects and see them all within a day or two MAX as the entire state is only a 3 hour drive North to South and a one hour drive East to West.

None of the other states mentioned are that small, meaning a coach would have to spend MUCH MORE TIME visitng with 10 favorite prospects from any one of TX, FL, OH, PA, GA, or LA.

In my opinion that's why NJ is more important than the afoentioned states.

That and the fact that it's the only state of TX, FL, OH, PA, GA, or LA that doesn't have a big time SUPER POWER program that keeps so many of the local studs home.

Yes, Rutgers is in the B1G now and they are certainly improved compared to 10-15 years ago... But they don't have the same "stay at home" attraction as Georgia, FSU, PSU , OSU, Florida, LSU or even GA Tech when it comes to keeping the 4 & 5 star kids home.

They might some day, but definitely don't in 2013.

Those are the reasons why, IMO, Cuse needs to hit NJ hard.

Some other posters can comment better than me since they told me such, but part of the problem dealing with these NJ programs are the additional strings attached to recruiting.

You're the connection you went to Bergen Catholic, go in there meet the coach extol the virtues of Syracuse and what going there did for your career and success that you'd love to have more Bergen guys go to SU. feed the info through our more connected board memebers help some of their less touted kids get interest in the patriot league etc....

Gotta recruit both PA NJ OH western NY (close with good talent) as well as Fla and Ga (full of talent) simple as that. A mixture of these areas has been the source of success with most of our best teams. I would also put Va in there because UVA has been down for awhile and players like shamarko coming out of there made me take notice.

Random memory...I remember being in middle school when MSG had the documentary following Bergen Catholic's season, "The Crusade" I believe it was called. They featured their star RB, "Super" Joe Sandberg & their rivalry with Don Bosco Prep, featuring future BC LB Brian Toal & Rutgers QB Mike Teel, among others. I also remember seeing future USC/ current Texans star Brian Cushing as like a Frosh/Soph & Phil's son Chris Simms as a ball boy for Bosco. I probably watched it 5-6 times, that rivalry's atmosphere was nuts. It was honestly one of the reasons that I decided to play HS fball after not playing modified.

This is true, especially with Don Bosco. The situation at Rutgers with Gary Nova is the perfect example. The only reason that kid is still playing is because he went to Bosco. But, as somebody else stated previously, there is a lot of undeveloped talent all around the state outside of the football power schools. Victor Cruz went to Paterson Catholic. That school doesn't even exist anymore. UCLA has a sophomore WR Devin Fuller who went to Old Tappan, hardly a football powerhouse (Actually his younger brother is playing now, maybe we should jump in on his recruitment since he already got an offer from Rutgers and UCLA). I know Dwight Morrow has a couple good kids this year as well.

You don't have to be ingrained in the Bergen County Catholic powers. Actually, probably the best way to do it is go into the lower income areas because that is where the undeveloped talent is. Englewood (Dwight Morrow), Hackensack, Paterson, always have really good players that just aren't developed yet because of poor coaching. And that is just in this area that I know of. There are plenty of really REALLY good players that didn't go to Bergen, Bosco, or Joes.

Yes I've seen that a couple times. I believe that was 01 or 02? Right before I enrolled there in 03. Sandberg was a legend there back then. Cushing kind of took his spot a bit though.
