Even we blitzed down the stretch it was almost always picked up. Qbs with tons of time just compound poor coverage skills on the backend. When we did get a rush the first read was always open so it didnt matter, and the QB could just dump it.

curious to hear by what metrics we fielded a decent D. no sacks. no takeaways. surrendering yardage (and points) galore every game much like the coastline to global warming and the rising seas. i keep hearing "3rd down %" meaningless. did you stop them 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 28 ? BC punted once. but how many 3rd downs converted 8/14.
way too many BIG plays this year and WAY too many yds and points. if you're telling me that incoming players alone are going to correct this situation next year then good luck cuz major changes need to be made to stop these offensive butt kickings.

We need Alton Robinson to be a 10+ sack guy next year. QBs need to fear him when they step on the field. There is a lot more to do, but Robinson has to be our guy to get the QB.

This right here. Also, how many times did the other team pick up a first down on either second or first down. Need to look at yards per play as a true measure. Next year the team needs to find a solution to create more turn overs and get significantly more pressure on the QB.

Bingo. the idea that we had a good defense is just wrong. They never gave the offense a short field.

Can't use any metrics for the defense, or the offense, from 2H of Wake through the rest of November. Got pushed around on both sides of the ball.

Take the stretch from Pitt, Clemson, Miami and FSU -- the defense was good, considering the fast pace of the offense, and the turnovers by the offense, too often on the first series. Giving up 24 points 2 times, 27 points 2 times; forcing punts, allowing the offense to have chances.

In November, with players out, the defense gave up way too many yards & points, and the offense was no better.

I just think we have to find a way to stay healthy. I don’t think we’ll ever have the depth to sustain what we lost on D.

At least we’ll feel better about the 2nd and 3rd QBs, that definitely had an impact this year.

Horrific interception aside, Rex really impressed me yesterday. Some nice throws with pressure in his face. Numbers were pretty good, even better if Butler brought his thumbs. Rex will get better with time. May not ever win a starting job but we always seem to need a few QBs ready.

Yes, QB position is in good shape for 2018 -- best in years. Rex had good throws, but also threw too often into coverage. That lateral pass/muff was his worst decision.
We will also have good depth in the DL -- again, best depth in several years, but we need a pass rusher to emerge.
Similar in the OL -- with Roberts back, and some talent in the second unit, plus highly rated recruits.
Depth at RB, as well, if not the top talent we need.

Depth won't be the biggest issue going forward. Even the weak areas that need first line help (WR & LB & RB) have numbers.

If you are waiting for a year when we have no injuries, you will be waiting forever. This is Football. Every team has injuries every year. Basically all we lost on D were 2 safeties, one who was a reserve. People are making Jordan Martin into Ronnie Lott.

Less injuries. In our better years, we’ve had less injuries than this. As Bees said the D was a mash unit.

If we will keep sustaining them at this level then we’re probably looking at similar seasons. Maybe the backups being recruited by this staff and trained by this staff will make a difference, but it’s just too hard for us to win with 2nd and 3rd stringers and only rotate 5-6 DL in a game.
