Gottfried

So based on what he said before the game...does that mean he doesn't want to be the #1 team in the country? I don't think there's much chance of that.

I enjoyed his work with ESPN and he coached a very nice game tonight. Got a kick out of his facial expression after Southerland's third three; looked a little overwhelmed.

He said before the season too. Not just before the game ... he ripped JB and Cuse before the season

He was on Axe yesterday and was VERY complimentary of SU. What did he say pre-game?

"I wouldn't want to be those guys."

That must mean he doesn't want to be #1. Not that he ever really has to worry about being #1.

if he said that to his team, he is suppose to.

Something along the lines of: "Knowing how well we can play and how prepared we are, I wouldn't want to be Syracuse tonight."

Horrendously offensive. I did a double-take to see if Mark Schwartz wasn't giving that speech.

It's comments like this in threads such as these that take the credibility of this forum down a notch.

Holy Rudolph, the guy was trying to motivate his team... What the funk do you want him to say pregame?

"Uh guys, ESPN's cameras our rolling and I don't wanna upset irrational Syracuse fans who may or may not be watching so just try your best even though we're clearly overmatched."

I mean...god forbid he use a pre-game locker room speech to pump up his players that are about to take the floor against the No.1 team in the country. What do you expect him to say? ...we are going to lose...but lets keep it within 20 points!" I appreciate the fact that coaches allow cameras into the locker room for us to see that. If you dont like what he said, you have NO competitive spirit.

I didn't really take it that way. I thought he was referring to the energy in the crowd. It was a pep talk to his team. Not really sure we should knock him for the statement. The earlier comments re: boehiem -- sort of a di@k.

He's a disgusting, despicable human being. I can't believe he would ever try to fire up his team. Complete, utter scum of the earth. u P.O.S.

The earlier statements were kinda dick, and the more I think about it, it's more kind of weird because he is a first year ACC coach.

But seriously, as I said in a different thread, I don't think we or JB would be happy if a school came to the BE and suggested moving the conference tournament away from NYC. And lets also be fair, didn't JB take some shots at Greensboro?

I don't care about his pre game speach. I am talking about his pre season comments.

"Where would you want to go to to a tournament for five days?" Boeheim quipped. "Let's see: Greensboro, North Carolina, or New York City? Jeez. Let me think about that one and get back to you."

I may be coming at this from a slightly different POV, because I grew up in an ACC family (dad went to UVA, Mom went to Maryland sister went to Wake) but the ACC tournament is a huge deal down there. They've been playing it over 50 years. So for JB to come in and take shots at the city, hey he can do what he wants, but let's not act like Gottfried said this stuff out of nowhere.

Jeez...you hold a coach accountable for what he says to pump up his players prior to a game? Give me a break.
Yes, he invited the ESPN camera into the locker room to run his mouth.

So Gott is a dick for:

1. Pumping his team up pregame

2. Defending his conference after Boeheim's awesome but kinda dick-ish NYC comments.

Am I on the same planet as some of you?

[I say this as someone who will take advantage of every opportunity to say rude things about the South, especially North Carolina and Georgia.]

Boeheim's comments were rude. Appreciated by me, but offensive to a lot of people. Gottfried's comments were pretty understandable. I can't say I agree (I'm fully with Boeheim on that one), but he didn't say anything wrong.

There's an odd compulsion to foster an "us against the world" mindset amongst our fanbase. If some people enjoy that, that's well and good. But it's weird, and most opposing coaches (especially Gottfried, who has been very complimentary about Syracuse) and members of the press don't have a negative bias against Syracuse. With many, it's quite the opposite.
