Gottfried

dude has been in ACC for one year -- what basis does he have?

'Gott' should have never commented seeing this is his first year in ACC play ...

Boeheim's comments were rude. Appreciated by me, but offensive to a lot of people. Gottfried's comments were pretty understandable. I can't say I agree (I'm fully with Boeheim on that one), but he didn't say anything wrong.

I agree. I'm with JB on the main point (I'd take NYC over Greensboro any day of the week).

But I don't get it, JB takes shots at Greensboro. Why is he allowed to say what he thinks, and if he insults someone, then whatever, but someone who responds and defends themselves is a dick? How does that make any sense? If you're gonna say stuff like JB did, then you have to expect people to fire back. (And I don't think JB had an issue with that, not referring to him).

It must be a nice world where you can say whatever you want, but if anyone else says something, they're an .

Edit: I do think it is fair to point out its a little weird coming from a first year ACC coach, but it still doesn't make what Boeheim said any less rude.

THIS.

I love what JB said. But MG was perfectly reasonable to fire back.

Not really...its not like he had been in the ACC for many years. He's a newbie. Its one thing for Coach K to say something; its something else when a no namer from NCState that has no history in the conference says something.

Boeheim has no history in the ACC either. We loved his comments about NYC vs Greensboro, but to an ACC fan, who the is he to say that? Gott is just defending his conference.

Again, why is Boeheim allowed to shoot his mouth off and no one else?

I don't think I totally buy it though, you have to have coached in the conference for a while to respond to someone saying dick things about a city and the ACC tournament that is very much associated with it?

The earlier statements were kinda dick, and the more I think about it, it's more kind of weird because he is a first year ACC coach.

But seriously, as I said in a different thread, I don't think we or JB would be happy if a school came to the BE and suggested moving the conference tournament away from NYC. And lets also be fair, didn't JB take some shots at Greensboro?

The ACC tournament moves though. The Big East Tournament doesn't.

I may be coming at this from a slightly different POV, because I grew up in an ACC family (dad went to UVA, Mom went to Maryland sister went to Wake) but the ACC tournament is a huge deal down there. They've been playing it over 50 years. So for JB to come in and take shots at the city, hey he can do what he wants, but let's not act like Gottfried said this stuff out of nowhere.
Sorry bro , don't want to hurt your feelings , I lost a lot of family to the southern... So All I know is CUSERULESALL

Let's see. Look at the ing tv set for all ACC tourney games vs BE tourney games

NYC capital of media world vs Greensboro ... come on, your reaching

That's why Duke and UNC try to schedule a game every year at MSG

I am thinking the city of Greensboro needs to file a defamation of character suit against SU and Jimmy B for those mean and nasty things he said when sticking his neck out for MSG and NYC

Between Kobe's divorce and the Fine case, does Gloria have the time? Wait a minute...its not about time...its about tv cameras. Are there enough tv cameras that would be interested in that suit? I read that Kobe was worth $300M. Cali state law says that wife gets 50%. Gloria could have a HUGE pay day coming. Her attention needs to be there...so she can afford all the plastic surgery she needs and look like Joan Rivers in a couple of years. As Whitlock said...the Al Sharpton for women.

Alright, I'm a Tar Heel and not a big fan of the Wolfpack but I'll stick up for coach Gottfried here. Coach Boeheim fired some shots at Greensboro, and Gottfried decided to respond. I'm glad at least someone in the conference had the cajones to say something.

Look, my mother and sister went to Syracuse, I was born and bred a 'Cuse (as well as Tar Heel) fan, so I have tons of respect for Coach Boeheim. And, he was kind of right...Greensboro does kinda suck when compared with NYC. Still, that's our tournament, and that's our tournament's home, so I'm glad coach Gottfried stood up for it.

Yeah, it moves. And I am guessing Gottfrieds reaction would've been different if JB didn't go out of his way to insult Greensboro and Charlotte and instead just mentioned that it would be awesome to play the ACC tournament in NYC. (Because it would be)

I understand your point of view...but the ACC tourney rotates...which means it doesnt have an identity. NYC will give an identity to any form of entertainment that is worth the price of admission; the ACC tourney could be the "old" BE tourney. Easily!

Good post; agree completely.

I think that if you took a vote of coaches and AD's in the ACC, outside of Tobacco Road, the majority would love to have the ACC tourney in MSG...or any NYC location.

They'd be stupid not to.

Disagree. They couldn't possibly take that stance in the south, even if they personally thought that way.

Cheers,
Neil

The ACC tournament does rotate, you're right about that. But I can't agree with your assertion that the ACC tournament doesn't have an identity. I'm from North Carolina and went to high school here. My high school would schedule its teacher workdays intentionally on the same days that the ACC tournament began, so that students could watch the games and not have to sit in class and be potentially distracted. ACC hoops is a huge, huge deal down here.

Still, I'd say that the Big East tournament is (or, was, before the demise of the Big East) the more entertaining tournament. I'll never forget McNamara's string of game-winning buzzer beaters in the BET several years ago, or the 6OT classic between 'Cuse and UConn more recently. Ideally, I'd love to rotate between MSG and somewhere in North Carolina for the new ACC Tournament, but that's not my decision to make.

This is the potentially the last year of classic Big East hoops, and I'd love nothing more than for Syracuse to go out on top. You have at least one person here in Chapel Hill pulling for y'all the rest of the way out (unless, of course, we meet in the tournament!)

So what happens to the BET in MSG if the ACC goes there one year?

Totally agree.
1) Its NYC
2) There is more money to be made if it's in NYC vs. Charlotte or Greensboro (UM, Cuse, Pitt, UNC and Duke have a ton of alums there)
3) NYC translates into mass appeal...not just ACC country
4) The ACC expanded to include Cuse, Pitt and BC. It would be hypocritical to NOT want to enter into NYC because they want to maintain their identity as a southern conference.

Yeah, the ACC tournament absolutely has an identity. It's the longest running tournament with the most tradition. ACC hoops is pretty much everything down in the south, as the post above alludes to.

That's not to say I don't think the ACC tournament held in MSG from time to time, I definitely think it should. But 1) people down there are very passionate about the ACC tournament, and would't want to lose it every year, and 2) you can talk up MSG and NYC and why the ACC tournament should be held there at least sometimes without insulting the cities it is in.
I've always thought the 2 best conf tournaments were the ACC and the BET. Acc because of the tradition, BET cause of MSG. Would be great to combine those 2 things.

Then those crackers are dumber than I thought.

BUT...what would be a bigger story (i.e. more press and publicity)? Duke/UNC winning the ACC tourney in Greensboro or winning it in NYC?

Don't disagree with any of this, particularly if you are talking a once in a decade ACC tourney being held in Brooklyn - I don't see MSG giving up the Big East tourney for an infrequent ACC tourney.

But keep in mind that only 8 years ago several ACC teams with the help of the state of Virginia took VT to keep the ACC a "southern" conference and if good southern teams with a decent academic reputation were willing to join the ACC in 2011 it's unlikely they would have added us and Pitt.

We, along with BC, Pitt, and to a smaller degree MD, will be red-headed stepchildren from Yankee territory to the vast majority of ACC fans. Make no mistake about that. Fortunately for us, they are mostly wine and cheese fans so they will act with style and decorum for the most part while trying to keep us in our place. :D

Cheers,
Neil
