Grassroots effort to renew 44?

I guess that I look at this totally different than the rest of you. Floyd Little was not just a great football player but a great man and ambassador for the university. He did a lot for the school. If his family wants us to sit on 44 and not give it out until his grandson could potentially wear it then I say fine. Let's respect the wishes of Floyd's family and give back to someone who has done so much for SU. It has been mothballed for so long that a couple more years won't make a difference. To me this is giving back to someone who gave so much to you. If it makes his family happy to not give it out for a couple of years then okay. My one caveat is that in respecting their wishes we also publicly announce that 44 will be eligible to be used again by say 2023 or thereabouts so the plan is clear.
But Floyd himself wanted to see the number unretired w/o waiting for a grandson
Who was the AD when it was retired?

I think we should maybe cut Floyd's wife some slack. She was asked about this during an emotional week for the family, so I can understand if she got caught up in the moment and said things that came off in an unintended way. I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt.
I think that’s fair. When they asked her the question (from what they showed on TV) I thought it was a set up for her to give a nod to Tucker. I suppose I was surprised her statements made this whole thing seem less likely.

I’m not knocking how she wants his legacy remembered or anything but if it were me personally, I think I’d want it unretired ASAP, hear his name every time Tucker does his thing… I don’t know I can’t imagine there wouldn’t be more buzz about Little if the number was back in action.

(I’m only one cup of coffee in if that all seems disjointed)

If that’s true - and I’ll disagree with you, I don’t think it’s true - what do you have to lose? If it means nothing, then seriously what’s the downside?
Make 44 Great Again!
no down side. Its just not a big deal.

I'm a novice at this petition thing. Help me out.

I've shared it every way I know how, and it is currently only at 147 signers. Got to that number in about 2 1/2 days. Nothing since.

Should I submit it now, or hold out a bit? I don't see any harm in waiting a bit, as we know they aren't going to do anything in season.

Thoughts?

Keep re-linking it on your FB feed if you have one, or any other social media you have. Some of your friends or contacts won't have seen the first time, or couldn't do it for various reasons. Doesn't hurt to mention that they are free to share the link as well.

I like Konrad, but his explanation is such an absurd excuse for two reasons. First, no 5 star is coming to Syracuse and even if they magically fell into the programs lap, they haven’t proven both on and off the field what Tucker has already proven. So what if the 2022 class signs a 5 star running back? Is he suggesting that kid is more deserving than Tucker?!?!? Secondly, I don’t give a bleep what Jim Brown says. Be an adult and come to your own conclusion, Rob.

Am I the only one who doesn't care what they think at all? I mean for all Jim Brown did well, he has his share of issues. I would think as "woke" as the university is, they should be careful how much they pump him up.

Anyone that wore 44 and doesn’t want Sean to wear it comes across like the dude who gets upset that a bench warmer is wearing his high school football number the year after the graduates.

Who the hell is Rob Konrad and why would I care what he thinks?

Right? I mean, come on dude it's not like you were an all time great.

it doesn't matter.gif

Just stop with all this 44 stuff at this point. SU is just embarrassing itself more and more as this Fiasco continues to play out.

SU is acting like Tiny Tim to these freakn' people.

Back in the day of Brown/Davis/Little, freshman couldn't even play anyway. I have no issue if we moved to a format where the number was given to a deserving 2nd or 3rd year player so you at least get the guys into the program, see how the develop and evolve both as a player and a citizen. That takes more of the risk out of the Mandel Robinson type 44's imo.

There's a certain weirdness with this number in that the previous people who wore it think that by additional people wearing it, it waters down the legacy. Well, if you weren't one of the additional people to wear it...ROB...you wouldn't even be part of the legacy to begin with.

It just all reeks of self-interest/selfishness if you ask me.

The number belongs to SU RBs not any one single player. Thus, the players who wore it should have no say. If #44 was only Little's number than 100% his family should have a say. But it wasn't retired for him, it was for the overall SU RB legacy.

We should retire the individual jerseys BTW. It is silly that we don't have the 3 main #44 jerseys up there in addition to the single #44. It is a disservice to the individuals to have to share the honor with no name.

I agree with you. Let’s be honest, they don’t really care what he says. They are terrified of his reaction should he disagree with a decision made. His voice publicly is much stronger than the University’s and they are afraid of repercussions. While I understand this, these wheels were set in motion back when it was retired in the first place. Thanks TGD.

I’m over it at this point. The whole thing is ridiculous. Let Sean establish himself and make a legend of his own number.
One player doesn’t make a number, that’s the problem! You need consistent success to build a legacy and 44 already has it. This is about building for the future, Tucker is going to get his, but the school needs to think about the long term impact of his massive success. He can be the player that brought it back! He gets his name in the proverbial history books next to Jim Brown as players who established (and re-established) this great legacy.
Literally a joke. So it can be 5-star program altering player, or a likely PWO benefiting from nepotism? Does he not see the massive contradiction? Also is Tucker not a program altering player? Without him does Syracuse win 4 games or are they in 1-2 win territory again? Wildhack needs to man up and give the number to Tucker. It’s good for the school, good for him and good for Wildhack honestly as that guy needs every bit of good PR he can muster.

Not 4 games...

Rob Konrad was a 5 star recruit, but turned out to be not program altering, so I guess he shouldn't have worn it either. Therefore by default his opinion doesn't matter :)
