Great fan bases vs Crap fan bases ~ an open discussion

i think like everything, the worst stick out like a sore thumb. diehard fans who post on message boards are like radicals (mostly). they experience a roller coaster of emotions. as the team does well, they act unstoppable. when things go poorly, its the end of the world. those type of people are the ones we experience from the opposition and base our opinions off, but in reality, its a small sample set.

in addition, a big factor in public opinion regarding the strength of a fan base is fan support and attendance. i will say that it is universal, is if your team doesnt win, then people lose interest. there is so much talk about how interest in college football is down in syracuse. there are so many things to blame but in reality, there is one root cause: we've sucked and lost a lost of games. if lsu sucked for 10 years, i dont care what anyone says, theyd be playing in half empty stadiums.

my point overall is, all fanbases are more similar than different. that being said, i hate ohio state.

Hated:
Ohio State fans
Ohio State fans
Ohio State fans
Ohio State fans. (and no, I am not stuttering)
Notre Dame fans.
UConn and Rutty fans.
Arizona State fans. (Other than all of the girls, because they are generally smokin' hot)

And......

Greg Robinson.

RF does your family know of your tOSU problem?

Oh yes.

I started off at least feigning support, but it had been a politely competitive thing between our respective families. And secretly I would delight whenever they lost, the program got in trouble, etc.

That went out the window after we got screwed over by the NCAA tournament refs in 2012 and lost to those @#$% to advance to the final four. Now, I overtly root against Ohio State, and don't care what they think. I've always disliked the Suckeyes [almost as much as the Cavs], even before living in Ohio / marrying into an OSU family. Post 2012 NCAA tournament, I don't bother to conceal my disdain anymore.

And we have Lexington Steele if you wanna measure baseball bat lengths.

BTW, we have the highest attendance in College Hoops and Lacrosse...I'm sure you knew that since you are so full of knowledge. :vomit:
at no point did i question Syracuse's support in basketball or LAX. You however, made a point that we don't have a fan base outside of the fall, which is obviously false.

Not in my experience. My trip there (WV) was the worst experience related to opponent fans that I ever had. From the time we parked our car until the game was over... the worst. Walking by tailgates of people spewing the raunchiest of insults. Non-stop. Sucked.

Never been to a game, my friend had a really bad experience down there. Ironically he is an Lsu fan, went down when Lsu played there a few years ago, said it was brutal. Some moron dumped a beer on his wife, some lunatic cursed at his son. A Lsu rv had all of its tired slashed in the parking lot.

UConn fans are the worst. NC State and Clemson internet fans are the most annoying we've dealt with in the ACC, but they are not in the same time zone as UConn.

The LSU and FSU fans that have come here are pretty cool, especially compared to Clemson.

When we were walking up to the stadium some jackass is swearing his ass off about how Syracuse sucks, etc... with his (guesstimate) 10 year old son next to him. When we got back to our NYS plated car after the game, it was completely blocked in. We walked into a bar before the game and immediately the crowd launched into some sort of song they knew that ended in FU as they pointed to us in our SU gear.

Add BC fans to the delusional list.
Hey -SUPERFANS!!!!!

Like everyone else my biased views are based on small sample groups and the internet. With that said:

Fan Bases I Hate:
UConn, arrogant insufferable s, #1 on my list.
Va Tech - loud, drunk hillbilly s. All of the worst fan behavior I saw in the Dome while I was a student involved belligerent drunk Va Tech fans.
Miami - I also kind of love to hate these guys. I remember before the game McNabb's sophomore year there was an older black gentleman dressed like a pimp, chomping on a cigar, yelling "CANES in town" to nobody in particular as he walked up to the Dome. It was pretty awesome.

Fan Bases I like:
Louisville - tons of positive interactions at the last BE Tourney, positive interactions with their fans on our board. Very knowledgeable and polite to a fault.
Pitt - All the Pitt fans I've met have been really chill and I used to post on their board sometimes and was treated pretty well.
Auburn - when i was in the Army I partied there on some weekends and went to the SU football game at Auburn in 2002. Talk about Southern hospitality, was a great time.

This pains me to say a little, since the Gators have always been my "other team", but most of the FSU fans I've interacted with have been great.

my most hated fan bases:

Alabama: the people who actually went there aren't bad, but they have more band wagon, walmart fans than anyone out there, and those people are insuffarable

Ole Miss: how a fanbase can have such delusions about their team is beyond me. They haven't won the SEC since 1960, yet they act like they are in the SEC Elite. They actually have an SEC West Co-champions banner hanging in their stadium from Eli's last year, when they did not even represent the SEC West in the SECCG

Kentucky: I don't mind their football fans, but their basketball fans are the worst. It doesn't help that they somehow manage to outnumber us at our home games against them

Arkansas: see Ole Miss, minus ever winning the SEC championship

OOC:

West Virginia: These people take pride in burning down their town

Notre Dame: Every time we play them, the insults they spew always tend to revolve around academics.

I guess the Bottom-line is: most Internet based impressions on fans are skewed by the worst of the worst. I stopped posting over at TigerDroppings. I got tired of trying to answer questions about game day stuff and visiting the area as jerks on their board threw in Yankee slurs, bashed Syracuse (team and the city), and added other provincial based thoughts in the same thread. Generally the older LSU fans are respectful as they understand history and where Syracuse fits into the hostory of college football...it is the younger ones that have only seen Cuse post McNabb/Freeney.

In person I've never been to WVU but I have run into the most jerks at UConn. Even more than Rutgers.

UConn fans are the dirt worst in real life, imo. BBall especially.

I went to WVU for the RJ Anderson game. Some called us white trash. We laughed...as they were literally white trash...and that was that. The majority were cool and gave us drinks.

I've told this story a bunch of times here, but never had an SEC audience. I was in Vegas in September 2011 for a wedding and it happened to be the week we announced we were going to the ACC and SU football was playing at USC. I'm sitting in the Mandalay Bay sports book with a fuse shirt and this mouth breathing Ole Miss fan screams "SEC SEC" in my face.

Of course this was before they were good and I responded that them chanting "SEC" was like a DePaul fan bragging about being in the Big East. Sadly the joke was lost on him.

After having lived in CT for most of my post-college life I'll say this about UConn fans... Like any fan base, the majority are nice folks who treat people well and interact appropriately. But the minority that are terrible are *really* terrible. It's like that bunch got the worst attributes of the Boston and New York fans bases that they sit in the middle of. Crude, rude, arrogant, dumb, and lacking the slightest sense of humor. The inferiority complex that people carry in this state is SO damn strong and it really manifests itself in some UConn fans.

Hmmm--I've been to multiple road games in Morgantown, and have had the opposite experience as what you're describing each time. In fact, the last time some hillbilly DID actually call something out at us from one of the tailgaits, and the guy who was running the tailgait felt bad, invited us over, gave us some food / beer, etc. WV fans are actually quite knowledgeable about football, but my experience is that they leave it in the stadium. Now, inside the stadium is another matter. They foam at the mouth, curse Marvin Graves, etc. But oustide the arena I've found them to be quite hospitable.
I love the wvu fans who traveled to suracuse

I have to laugh at UConn fans. Back when they had Perno as coach they really sucked. But they had some great diehard fans. They were my best drinking buddies at the Blarney. I'd see the same crew every year there. Then they got good, and those guys kinda disappeared and were replaced with obnoxious aholes. Johnny come lately bandwagon fans who had money. And of course their student fans multiplied by 100x.

I've been to Morgantown twice. Both times they treated us great pregame feeding us and giving us drinks. Were fun to talk too also. One game we lost like 19-0 when Downing was QB. Post game, the ones we had tailgates with were fine but some were obnoxious. Mostly younger fans. The other game we blew them out big time. Can't remember the final but at halftime we were up something like 27-0. It was funny at halftime I have never seen so much traffic with tail lights blazing. Post game we couldn't find a single wvu fan we had tailgated with pregame.

I'm from Connecticut. I grew up a uconn fan and my family and high school friends are all uconn fans. They have a higher percentage of a***** fans than any school I've dealt with.

We usually tailgate at LSU with other family and friends, we like to welcome the away fans to join us and share our food and drink with them and to show our kids that its about the game and the camaraderie that surrounds it. As a result we have found most fan bases to be all the same, friendly, mostly knowledgeable, and up for a good time. LSU fans do get rowdy but its mostly in good natured fun and as for the "Yankee" slur its thrown around in fun. Trust me my wife from NY and she's beloved down here on The Bayou. My point is most fans that travel are good people - Except for Gumps!

Btw don't go to tiger droppings.com look for well balanced posters looking to engage in factual civil interactions.
