went back to look at a few plays to see what we can do better..

First play of the game.. Everyone focused on the over throw.. Yeah but look closer. .Both guys are open.. If anything the throw to Harris is easier since he can lead him.. But the fact we got 2 guys open and both beat man2man off the line is great.. Need to see more of that

To me the place this game changed was up 21-7.. Mide 3rd. We stopped them again and we went for the kill shot. 2nd and 9 from the 25. Play action at a time Liberty was still not run blitzing.. We under throw Alford deep. The safty bit up and chase the play.. I think this might be the one coach was not happy with the route. But with this view hard to tell if the throw came back or Shrader thru back into coverage becuse thats where Alford was going.. I think Alford needs to go more across the field perhaps but the throw was pretty short in the end..

But the issue was look at Harris again. Nice design to this play. Shrader needs to see that

But again this was followed up by the next play the sideline throw to Queeley. Not a bad throw into a tight window.. but the play was again to Harris.. Another nice design play. Huge window the safety was 20 yds deeper. That is something Shrader needs to see on film. Have to believe the throwing window to Harris needs to be the play here based on the D. But on all 3 he was throwing to the guy from the beginning of the play..

Anyone of these is huge yardage complete 2 of them and its a TD and the 3rd its 25-30yds if Harris doesnt make anyone miss..

at 21-21. We had our next miss. Liberty in cover 2. and we for 4 wide.. Someone ran the wrong route here.

hard to see thru the blur. but the throw goes to Harris who is covered.. But why is Quelley on the same turn in route and on the top side alford is doing a curl and Jackson who would have been uncovered on a curl is going deep.. Fine But if Queely runs the post deep in or Harris runs the Post either one is uncovered in this defense. The safety cant cover both but he can if they both run to the same angle of the throw.. At the top no saftey in the picture because he went with Jackson..

final play 5:30 to go after the goal line stand 3rd and 3. we run harris in motion and it becomes a pass/lateral dangerous play.. But you look at this play and you can see it should have worked.

Liberty has 8 guys inside the hash. 2 are blocked a the top and the safety is 20-30 yds deeper..

But Shrader gives up too soon. Pitches quick with 10/34 closing a bit.. the big deal is that both WR miss the block. Not sure who the outside WR was 12 I think? Jackson misses his and suddenly Harris gets blown up with no room to dodge the Guy and the Safety coming up fast.. Had shrader come up just a bit more to the line the safety angle changes by alot and this play probably goes for a first down.. It also showed that Liberty had some speed at thee spots and closed down a bunch of plays so some credit to the D..

Honestly, I think GS will improve. But, he's not a natural at leading targets. Even with his beard, I would not be taking him on any duck hunting expeditions any time soon.

Edit: His passing looks eerily the same as his frosh year. He's far better at throwing to a spot, rather than hitting a moving receiver.

Well, that makes sense.

He had a year off entirely from being a QB at all, and only started up again in Spring ball, in a new system

It’s pretty much his Frosh season all over again now.

I rewatched his highlight reel yet again.
He’s a really good runner, terrific ball fakes, tough, good vision.
Avoids pressure about as well as could possibly be expected.
Makes things happen.

But - like Dungey he is often far too quick to call his own number, keeps a lot when he probably should’ve handed off, and makes some dreadful throws based on really poor decisions. His ball security isn’t awesome.

Let’s hope these are all areas he can improve upon.
Rapidly.

Ditto on ball security, but certainly GS has shown great hands so far. Just really, really hope we don't see those lofted deep balls getting picked.

congrats...nice breakdown.
There are openings in the passing game. Shrader has to recognize where the open guy is going to be
and then give him a "catchable ball"...ON TIME. You gotta believe he can do this as a 4star QB recruit.
He is/was rusty. I look for some improvement quick(next 2 games).

Really like your use of screenshots. With respect to analyzing the patterns, I think you would need screenshots of the routes just prior to the QB releasing the ball to make some of the conclusions.

that’s a long time to expect WRs to be able to hold their blocks and it’s not realistic.

in the first frame they need to start heading north, the longer Shrader keeps it running sideways it’s a rather easy play to defend. IMO this play wouldve work better had Shrader dumped the ball to Taj much earlier in the first frame. Not sure why he kept it so long.

I would if we had some better camera angles.. the other issue is finding a copy of the game that you can freeze frame.. if you use espn when you pause it , it goes darker. Like on the 2nd taj play. You can see the play action and the safety come up and realize its going over him and he turns and runs as does the other corner. Taj runs across the field completely uncovered from his 2/3 step. that is why it turned into triple coverage.. Shrader needs to see the field better. the ACC camera work is awful to work with.

I think the play was poorly designed. To me, the goal should be to get the dbs out of the area rather than try to block them, so that Harris just needs to outrun one guy to the sideline. Starting with two out wide actually adds defenders to the area, especially when the slot wr just stands there. An alternative would have been to run the slot wr on a slant or a crossing route to pull his cover with him and run interference on any defender trying to come across to defend.
I also think Harris took too much of a backward angle so that he was too far behind the LOS when he received the ball.
I also think this is a better play for 1st or 2nd down, not 3rd and 3, but that's not a huge deal.

agree a 100%. It's a poorly designed play. Some bastardized version of a standard option and they throw in misdirection with Tucker to boot. Besides possibly having the slot run a slant I might use Tucker there as a blocker. Fake a handoff to him going left and he can take on any of those guys who get free. Just a thought but I hated the play live.

The thing that I find most encouraging after the game was GS comments. He placed the poor passing performance squarely on his shoulders. Said he needs to watch the film and do better. That is why I feel we will see improvement in the passing game every week if he continues to get all reps with the 1st team.

Wish you could get the all-22s like they have in the pros for our games but this is a solid breakdown under the circumstances, upperdeck
yeah that would be sweet. The ACC camera work is awful when trying to see these plays break down.

Depending on Field position i would become a 4 down team. 40 yards and in play to get 10 in 4 downs which means you have to have positive yardarge on 1st.

Do you use gamepass for all-22? they’ve been taking it on and off for a bit now, i’ve had to get my giants film from a buddy who has access to all that. nfl making it a lot harder than it needs to be.

Is that presser available anywhere? I’ve looked and can’t find it.

don't believe it was said in any presser, when they interviewed him on the radio in the locker room post game was when I heard him say those things.

Got it thanks!

The game doesn't get close if Sharrod makes the 3rd down catch thrown behind him. Most WRs like it when the QB leads them away from a defender and protects them but our guys cant bring in anything that isn't perfectly thrown.

The stupid swing lateral passes on third downs were awful calls I would have liked to see GS given a chance to convert those third downs.

Our team reminds me of the New York team in Tecmo Bowl; can’t pass but best running game and nasty D.

Didn't realize that it wasn't on there anymore. I used to use it but haven't recently.

Unfortunately, Shrader's best throw of the game was to Johnson on the left sideline, hit in stride into a tight window, but Johnson had a foot out of bounds.

Edit to add screen shot. Ball right over defender's shoulder, right in the breadbasket ~30 yards downfield
