Happy 60th anniversary

There have been many bad snowstorms in my lifetime but nothing compares to the Blizzard of 66.

One of the two doors in our house was snowed in for a week or so.

We could actually walk up a giant drift in our backyard to the second floor roof. And that is how my dad went to work and came back for a few days.

Another giant drift gave us easy access to our garage roof. We had lots of fun waiting for school to open again.
Uphill both ways, right?

The Blizzard of '66. The snow was up to the roof of our ranch house. Tunnels were constructed at my house. Quite a feat when I consider how bundled up my Mom had us. My husband had to go out a second story window to gain access to the first floor of his home.

I'm happy to see the snow falling down here in NC this morning. It's covering up the ice covered sidewalk of death and providing traction so I can take the dog outside.

I gave up shoveling about 4 years ago. My back just won’t take it anymore. Being a broke kid was quite a motivator when I was young though, I had a nice market on my street shoveling walks and mowing lawns. Didn’t like ice at all though. I’m a pro unpaid couch sitter now. 😀
I was out shoveling the melting slush/ice off an uphill portion of our driveway this week. Afterwards my knees told me that they didn't want to do that again.

Ah yes, there's nothing young people love more than hearing about weather from decades ago. ;)

Seriously, it's amazing how blizzards stick in our minds more than just about any other major weather event. Cool pics.

Blizzard of 93 was the one for me. ‘66 was before my time.

I just remember having to shovel like every other hour. I think my mom just wanted me out of the house haha.

Did some crazy jumps sledding at Virginia Ave Park in JC though with all the snow.

I remember it well, growing up in Rochester. Out of school for a week and huge mounds of snow? Heaven!

The town was running out of places to put the plowed snow, so they ended up putting it in large strip mall parking lots. We were playing on snow piles (albeit dirty ones) until mid-June!

66 was a doozy. I remember walking up the middle of a completely empty South Salina street to the Nedrow tavern for a couple of brews with my buds. There were a couple 4 wheel drive pickups in the lot along with an Everglades style airboat. It had an open airplane propeller uncaged on the back. Right after I got there a guy left heading south. It was really cool seeing it flying over the snow packed road.

School was closed all week in our county in Maryland this week. We got like 8 inches and it stopped snowing Sunday afternoon. We are very soft down here.

But yes, my parents talk about the Blizzard of 66 a lot. My Mom grew up in Solvay and my Dad in Eastwood. They said the sledding was incredible.

Solvay mentioned!

I
To the blizzard of ‘66.

For you young kids, today is the 60th Anniversary of the Blizzard of 66. January 30th-31st 1966. Between 45” - 105” of snow fell depending on where in CNY you lived. Oswego got 50” just on Jan 31. A couple days prior, the temps had even dropped to -26 degrees.

This photo was taken 2-2-66. Me and my 2 bros. I’m the good looking one in the middle. School was closed a week.

I will never forget the Blizzard of 66.

I have never seen anything like it.

Snowed in on Dogwood Lane in Manlius for days.

It made for the best snow forts. We even had turrets

I had someone tell me about jumping out the second floor window of their frat to tunnel to the front door. Thought it was Cornell but maybe Oswego.

Had a friend drop me off two blocks from my parents house in 93. First day of spring break? Walked home with snow to my knees. Dad was shoveling the drive. He stopped when he saw me, said welcome home, then told me to grab a shovel.

Thanks for he reminder and the pictures. Oh yes, I remember it well. I don't think our street (in the city) was plowed for 3 or 4 days. Snow was piled up like 6 feet. My aunt taught us how to play bridge during it. It's going to be cold in South Florida this weekend. Down to 29 tomorrow night and 30 Sunday night. I know not like up north but that's almost unheard of down here.
Iguanas will be falling from the trees.
Now lf only the pythons started croaking.

My wife grew up in Liverpool lived on Bear Rd. and always has a story or two regarding the blizzard of ‘66. Said that they could not open their front door and had to bust a back door in order to get outside. Snow was up the roofs drip edge.
I would have been in San Diego Ca. riding my Schwinn Stingray without a care in the world!
