On this date in 2003 we became National Champions for the first time. Announced by Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser today on PTI. Congratulations to Syracuse University basketball! The show had a picture of Carmelo and Gerry celebrating after the win. Carmelo was rookie of the month every month during the season his first year and yet:
Was it a "Set Up"?
While some fans argue that Carmelo’s superior team success (leading the Nuggets to the playoffs) deserved the award, the vote was not seen as a "set up" but a reflection of the higher potential and statistical versatility shown by LeBron. Carmelo did win Rookie of the Month six times—the only player in NBA history to do so and not win Rookie of the Year—highlighting how tight the race was.
