I really hope we land a high end QB this first weekend. It will really set the stage and help with skill position commits, and shore up any questions about Angelo’s availability coming back from the injury.

Since we need a pass catching TE to replace Villari, I wonder if we’ll see that in the portal or maybe shift Tremble back to that role and seek out a high end LBer in the portal? Should be interesting…

Hope to see a number of the Toledo upperclassmen D players in short order. That would be nice to start filling out the D 2 deep.

So many left this year. Will Syracuse be able to replace most them via the portal?

Enough of the outgoing side of the equation, I was told there would be math and science here and we know that every action (outgoing portal) requires an equal and opposite reaction (incoming). Let the announcements and signings begin, and may they be numerous and impactful in a positive way.

Were we allowed to be in contact with players in the portal ahead of today, or does that start now?

We can contact there agents before pretty sure, or some back channel stuff.

Well let’s look at who left skill position wise:

QB - Collins, Carney, Williams - none of these 3 were going to be contributors here moving forward for, quite frankly, different reasons. What is success for us here? I think a starter quality QB and a quality backup QB to go along with incoming Lott (Fr) and returning Angeli would be the way to the A+ here

RB - Willis, Hart, James - Willis definitely would have been in the rotation and probably had a leg up on being the #1 next year even with his limitations and trips to the doghouse. Hart/James were not going to be significant contributors. If we can land a starter quality RB out of the portal to go along with our existing depth chart, that’s the way to the A+ here. We only had 1 Fr in the 2026 class incoming (Anderson), to go along with Hill and Coleman. I think we need 2 portal RB’s with one starter capable at a minimum. Nixon is trying to get a waiver for another year but we can’t count on that.

WR - Cook, Gill, Ross, Hatcher, Hornsby - I think it’s hard to really say who the probable starters would be heading into next season. We have some very high end talent coming in with this incoming class (Russell, Gough, JUCO Merriweather and 2-3 others) plus Boobie Johnson from last class who looked great before he got injured. I could see maybe a value add or a flyer here but with the number of WR’s in the incoming class at least from a numbers perspective we should be covered. I’d say 1 value add here for depth / veteran leadership would be the path to the A+. I just don’t see this position as critical for bodies as some others.

Of the other 16 portal entries, most were rotational players at best for this season and I think with the strong probability of multiple 2 deep quality players coming in from Toledo on the defensive side, we should be able to upgrade. But we really need to add a couple of impact players on both the OL and DL to make me feel really good about the portal effort.

Great post!

Football is a QB-dominated sport, so our success there will determine the 2026 season IMHO. Sounds like we're in on a couple of high-end D2 guys. Maybe one will be the next Trinidad Chambliss. Would be great to also land a 5th year G5 guy as well to round out our 3-deep.

I think it's best to approach this as if Angeli either won't be ready for game #1, or will get hurt at some point during the season. Hopefully neither happens, but we need to be a helluva lot more prepared for it than last year's disaster.

Agreed although if it is true that there were programs back channel contacting Angeli, that makes me feel a lot better about his potential availability. That being said, I don’t think there’s any way we exit this portal round without 2 veteran QB’s added to the roster if Fran values his job. It has to be priority #1.

Spend on the QB and both lines that will be Syracuse key to success. Sprinkle in a few position players and go with it. If we have a top shelf QB and dominate lines we will win.
