Here’s the question….who’s in control of the team on the court..,

100% agree.

Part of me wants the team given to him, bc he has confidence.

Or Kingz.

In addition to not having a plan, we are rudderless, as Jake alludes to in the OP.

Pick a leader and let them lead.

Or, pick a system & let it lead.

But to do neither is criminal.
If you are referring to the end of the game, Kingz was on the sidelines injured.

I'm sure Red is trying to do those things. I think it's more about communication, intensity, discipline, attention to detail, enforcing accountability...

That’s a lot of things wrong to be saying he’s trying. It’s the same issue we have in football, being good at recruiting doesn’t make up for everything else.

Red sucks as a head coach. He’s in way over his head. He should have never been put in this position without proving he could do it at a lower level.

No doubt, there are a lot of things. You can try and yet still not be good at that stuff despite your best effort. They are not mutually exclusive concepts.

I just looked at the replay and realized that Nate George wasn’t even on the court.

Someone will have to verify this for me, but I believe after the five second violation, we had the ability to substitute

Red has to get George on the court or at least use that substitution as an ability to organize the troops.

It was chaos. He’s been coaching for three years now he should have that figured out.
George wasn’t on the court and wasn’t playing much the last few minutes. Also, Nate Kingz got poked in the eye or face and wasn’t in either, but did Red actually check to see if he could put Kingz back in? Because he should’ve done everything in his power to get him back in.

Did anyone think Jim Obrien was a better coach than Rick Pitino. Sometimes a new voice gets through.

Assistants aren’t going to challenge the hc. I’d make a change now. I’ve seen nothing to suggest he’s gonna figure out the coaching part.

Why is everyone scared of a change? Who cares if the old guys from Hoosiers call for a town meeting? Tbh I think no one is untouchable in a rebuild
All the assistants are 100 times worse than Red. Full stop. If Red doesn’t turn it around, he gets fired after the season and we hire a new coach with a clear vision and track record and clean house.

My issue besides the Nait George disappointment (realize he was recovering from the flu but…) why is William Kyle who’s shooting over 71% getting less than 6 FG attempts a game? He’s way down the list for fga/minute played. Why aren’t we running plays for him to be more active on offense? 6 SU players not counting Donny have more fga’s than Kyle. Why isn’t he a higher priority? Sucking defenses inside should help free up someone outside and hopefully a player who would decide to cut too.

Dribble drive kick out offense doesn’t need a center

Anyone seen Bernie Fine?

He’s been visibly frustrated in a few games where he’s had position and the guards haven’t got it to him. Part of the problem is we have some terrible passers on the team.

This is stuff that most coaches drill constantly. End of game situations, time and score, who we need to have the ball, getting open vs pressure, what the plan is (almost always the plan is to get to the rim); sideline out of bounds vs under the rim vs half court, etc. It needs to be a meticulous attention to detail so that it becomes second nature for players.

I'm not saying that Red does not drill end of games situations. I would find it mind numbing to believe he does not. But the execution and court awareness is lacking.

I think it's also possible these kids go rogue and do their own thing. There doesn't seem to be a lot of accountability. Which is all on the coach for not setting the tone. Too many mistakes and mental errors. Teams needs a JB type doghouse.

Needs leadership, from players and coaches

The program hasn't been able to make an entry pass since Andy Rautins left. I'm not sure Kyle's ability to finish with a post move is a little overstated on the forum but throwing it into the post is just a lost art with this program. It predates Red but certainly isn't going to improve with me first guards like JJ and Anthony.

I feel the real problem is that this team has no real offensive identity. Yes they want to play fast and push the ball but zero half court or set plays. It’s like a team playing pickup basketball at the park. It could be a reason George has declined. If there is zero offensive sets there is only so much a point guard can do.

Based on the number of times they screen each other, I think that's probable. IIRC, Autry in his first year said that they don't really run plays or sets but it's a flexible offense that allows for the kids to make basketball plays ... or some nonsense. I get it the idea and goal there, but it's not working at all without NBA talent.

I wouldn't be so sure. The same people who got us into this mess and pressured ADJW into this quagmire are still there.

Who has done even a mediocre job at coaching our bigs? Anyone?
Baye was a very good defensive center. Lampkin had a good offensive game here. MaliQ was excellent defensively here too, Duke thought so too. Many of our centers were derailed by injuries like Sidibe. Kyle is shooting .714 here, who’s coaching him? I just would like to see more touches for him because he’s doing so well- what does that have to do with Bernie Fine?

Someone has to take control on the court.

There’s no flipping way we get the ball to William Kyle and Neither JJ or Nait get the ball.

It’s not Kiyan’s fault that neither of the others got the ball.

It looks like JJ is the designated go to guy, but JJ either can’t or isnt willing to get the ball in that situation. It looks like Nait is deferring to JJ, which I think is a bad idea.

Whatever the case, neither of those two stepped up when somebody has to step up. And that really falls on the head, Coach.

Have to get the ball in -- Hofstra didn't [5 second call], and it resulted in a turnover.

So getting it to Kyle... not great, but had to get the ball in.

But after that -- man oh man. George got benched, due to his inability to defend Hofstra's guards. So we were playing without our point guard. But in my mind [MY OPINION ONLY], JJ had to come get the ball. On the inbound play, he sprinted to the backcourt to try to give us a safety valve inbounds option.

But then... he didn't come back to get the ball. Needed to be in his hands, attacking the basket at the end. That was our best shot to score or get fouled. He's a senior. He had to be the guy with the ball in his hands and the game on the line. ESPECIALLY with that quirky lineup, with no point guard on the floor.

He didn't come get it.

I have no problem with Kiyan driving as time was running out. Disgusting that we didn't get that call, at home, when our player got clearly fouled.

Agree 100% with your final sentence.

I know he's a terrible foul shooter right now but, in that situation, I still feel most comfortable with the ball in Starling's hands for a short floater in the lane. I'm so disappointed with him for not getting the ball from Kyle.
Yes, but I absolutely hate it when Starling goes hard left and throws up a mile high floater across his body with his right hand. That is not going in. He needs to go right and use the damn glass. Him going left is an unmitigated disaster.

He’s a black hole once he starts driving. The amount of times we miss Kingz and Betsey with open looks on the perimeter to instead throw up some crazy garbage drives me nuts.

The last thing Starling wants to do is shoot foul shots when the game is on the line. That explains the vacuum. Compounded by the fact our PG was not even in the game. All said, Kiyan made a nice move and should have had been rewarded two foul shots. Regardless, this is a very poorly coached team, throughout the entire game, after time outs, after half-time, and most importantly, at end of game situations
