We made a play at the end of the half. We made a play to begin the half. Our defense kept the momentum alive. The offense advanced the ball in to NC State territory. We got in to a manageable 4th in a place where a field goal isn't agreat option and a punt doesn't do anything for you. We get NC State freaked out and they burn a timeout.

And then we punt.

From that point on, we handed control of our own destiny to the opponent and to chance.

Ridiculous. It's not a coincidence that we weren't able to keep it up. We ask too much of limited players. We can't expect our defense to stop the opponent on every drive. We can't expect that our offense will get the same field position we once had. We can't play the field position game. We can't play content.

And once again we give our fans a deflating game at home in the Dome.

Not only that, we have regular offensive momentum, good field position, chance to really separate ourselves, and what do we do? We reach into the bag of tricks of course! Pitch it around 3 times then back to the QB, because with today's OL, we had all kinds of time to throw the ball.

Terrible loss. 3 win season. Might as well give Wilson next week. It's all just one big audition at this point anyway. Let's try a 3rd playcaller too.

The next good SU QB isn't in the program.

We have a lot of average QBs, backs and receivers.

If Shafer thinks we're going to win with players no one has ever heard of, he's in for a big surprise.

While that was an incredibly stupid call, I can appreciate that we were at least trying to make something big happen on that one.

I get that McDonald is everyone's favorite punching bag, but Lester's done some weird stuff.

I ABSOLUTELY knew what this post what going to be about after reading the subject.

I ABSOLUTELY agree with everything you said.

Just have Long throw it up to either West, Ish or Lewis. While none of them are the fastest WR in this sport, they are each pretty good at finding, and catching the ball.

Hated that he punted there. Was almost burned too but the NC State QB overthrew his open by 15 yards WR.

Here's the thing though - I truly do believe we see a different outcome if we start valuing the chances we do generate. Maybe the play to get a 1st down fails, or the field goal attempt sails wide. Well, that happens, but at least we tried to make the right thing happen instead of being so passive. When you take more chances at doing the right thing, you get better at getting the right thing done.

We are so content to be passive. We get what we deserve.

He lost me on that call. No longer concerned whether this staff is the answer. I've had it with cowardice.

Well, you know, I'm pretty consistent.

The next McNabb isn't walking through that door.

AJ Long just threw for 300 yards with an OL that would be lucky to block a good HS DL.

I'm hoping AJ is the guy. I'm done hoping that the superstar recruit to be or a guy like Austin Wilson who can't move is the guy.

AJ is the guy in my book.

We are basically the polar opposite of Oregon (who goes for 2 in the first quarter of games just because they feel like it).

Charlie Munger (Warren Buffett's less heralded partner) always extols the virtues of conquering the "no brainer" questions first when trying to tackle a more sophisticated/complex problem.

There are lots of hard decisions to make during a BCS Football game, but That particular decision, I believe, qualifies under Mungers "no brainer" definition.

Yep.

Mr. Hardnose is a fraidy cat when it comes to being a head coach. The fear of failure is a self fulfilling prophecy. The clock management is worse than high school. Letting 11 seconds burn off the clock before calling your last time out at the end of the first half is inexcusable. If this was an occasional thing no big deal but it is a constant.

That's the Marrone in Shafer.

What drives me nuts is how we always waste our time outs early. Shafer needs to save something for the final minutes in a close game.

Look at what Bill Cubit has done with the Illinois offense. He makes $500,000. It just shows you that good coaching matters - really matters. What if he had been our OC?

Just to go back to this - this is exactly why the right system matters. Other teams understand how to score with average talent. We don't. When they get good talent, it goes next level.

We have the right system on defense. I don't know if we'll go in the right direction on offense.

Mentally, we have the wrong system. I don't know any other way to say it.

The whole thing is so illogical.

Shafer trusts his D so much that he's willing to, best case scenario, gain 25 yards of field position and force NC State to eventually punt.

But he doesn't trust his D enough to, worst case scenario, play against NC State's O from their own 36.

It's so freakin' idiotic.

His hardnosed BS makes me want to vomit.

Shafer needs to go ... he knows defense and is absolutely clueless about the offensive side of the ball.

I see all these coaches grabbing their QB at every opportunity to coach them up and instruct them. I've yet to see Shafer do this. This team needs offensive attention from the HC and it's not getting it.

The fact that our QB's coach is our offensive mastermind is downright pathetic. The fact our offence is awful shouldn't be a surprise.

And then he just doesn't understand when you need to go for it. I don't think Shafer understands mathematics at all ... even he said, stats are for losers. That's what people who don't understand things say.

I don't care about losing recruits. The new guy will bring some in. Shafer is not going to turn things around.

Yeah. But like, Isis, man. That's some real $#!+, gnome sayin'?

True but Oregon is loaded with 4 and 5 star players that make big plays...not a team of 0,1, and 2 star guys.

They are now.

They weren't when Kelly took over. Although they were still more talented than us.

But no one's asking for that anyway. We're asking that our coach doesn't call for 4th down punts like his head is full of rocks.

We're a team primarily of 3 star guys.

If you can't watch the games this season and see that coaching is a huge problem then you need to go to "learn how to watch football" school.
